Readable Markdown	##### **Statement / Definition****:** An external ventricular drain (EVD) is a temporary method of draining cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from the ventricular system of the brain when the normal flow of CSF is altered. \| \| \| \|---\|---\| \| Indications \| Signs and Symptoms of raised ICP \| \| Common indications include raised intracranial pressure (ICP) associated with – Head injury – Intracranial haemorrhage – Acute hydrocephalus – Cerebral / spinal tumours – Meningitis/ventriculitis/shunt infection \| – Irritability – Headache – Nausea/vomiting – Full/bulging fontanelle in babies – Decreased Glasgow Coma Score (GCS) – Hypertension/bradycardia – Pupil changes (fixed, sluggish, or dilated pupils) \| An EVD system involves introducing a catheter into one of the ventricles of the brain as below \| \| \| \|---\|---\| \| Name \| Specification \| \| Drip chamber volume \| 100ml \| \| Drainage bag \| 1000ml ,Make accurate drainage with scale \| \| 3 way stopcocks \| Can be connected with different tube \| \| Silicone ventricle drainage catheter \| Size are available for Fr8,Fr10,Fr12,Fr14,Fr16,Fr18 \| \| Adjustable plate \| With scale for accurate adjust \| \| Duration of application \| Short-term \| Instructions for Use: 1. Open sterile package,Sterile items are used once and disposed of into waste bag. 2. Connectthe patient catheter to drainage chamber 3. Hang a bag of normal saline 4. Prime the pressure tubing 5. Rotate the patient line 3-way stopcock 180° so fluid can be pushed in the direction of the drip chamber, prime the patient line all the way through to the drip chamber. 6. Turn the patient stopcock off towards the drip chamber 7. Level the drainage panel. 8. Set the drainage level. 9. Connect to patient with the ventricular catheter. #### Warning: - This device is not intended for permanent implantation. - This device should not be used if dermatitis or scalp infection is present at the catheter insertion site. - Care must be taken when using this device in patients receiving anticoagulants or in those who are known to have bleeding diathesis. - Use Since intracranial pressure is controlled by the height of the drip chamber or collection bag relative to the patient, it is imperative that neither the drip chamber (collection bag) nor the patient be accidentally raised or lowered. - The catheter should be secured with non-metallic sutures in such a manner as to avoid cutting or occluding the tubing. The use of stainless steel ligatures on silicone products is not recommended. - Use rubbershod forceps when handling the catheter to prevent tearing or cutting the catheter. - Reuse may result in transmission of infectious substances, interruption to treatment, serious harm or death.
