2026 Winter Olympics
in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo in northern Italy. With events starting on February 4, this marks the third time Italy has hosted the winter competition, following the 1956 Cortina d'Ampezzo Games and the 2006 Turin Games. (Rome hosted the Summer Olympics in 1960.) There will be 116 medal events for the 16 sports scheduled in this Five Circles event. Here's everything you need to know, from event schedules to mascots to the plans for the opening ceremony.

When Is the Opening Ceremony?
Although there are competitions scheduled for February 4, the ceremony that will officially decree the start of the Games is set for February 6. Hereâs
how to watch
.
Whatâs Happening at the Opening Ceremony?
The theme of the 2026 Winter Olympics is âHarmony.â While centered in Milanâs San Siro Stadium, events will happen simultaneously in Cortina, Livigno, and Predazzo. Organizers say the goal is to create a feeling of togetherness, even though the athletes and fans are miles apart.
Italyâs president, Sergio Mattarella, will be present at San Siro, officially kicking off the Olympics. The Milanese sports facility will become the heart of this ceremonyâa tribute to one of the world's most iconic stadiums before its probable demolition.
A large stage with four ramps will be created on the field, representing the four territories involved. The ceremony, curated by Marco Balich, creator of the Tree of Life sculpture for Expo 2015 in Milan, will celebrate Italian history: from music to fashion, from design to Leonardo da Vinci, and there will also be a moment dedicated to fashion icon Giorgio Armani, who passed away last September.
Where Will the Olympic Flame Be During the 2026 Games?
For the first time, there will be two Olympic flame cauldrons: one at the Arco della Pace in Milan and another in downtown Cortina.
The 2026 Olympic Medals Have a Sleek New Design
Inspired by the timeless elegance of the Italian avant-garde, the Milano Cortina 2026 medals have a geometric, pure, and simple design. They were made in collaboration with the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato, which makes coins and stamps for Italy. The line in the center represents continuous change: an energy that embodies the Olympics and Paralympics.

All the Event Venues You Need to Know About
All Olympic events are divided into four different main geographical zones, each hosting different events.
Milan
: opening and closing ceremonies, ice hockey, speed skating, figure skating, and short track
Valtellina
: freestyle skiing and snowboarding (in Livigno), mountaineering, and men's alpine skiing
Cortina
: curling and sliding sports (in Cortina), women's alpine skiing, and biathlon
Val di Fiemme
: ski jumping and cross-country skiing
The Winter Olympicsâ New Accessible Podiums
Made of wood and metal, the podiums athletes will appear on to accept their medals are adapted to the different disciplines, individuals, and teams. In fact, they can accommodate up to 10 athletes per medal and are fully accessible, thanks to fall-preventing ramps and curbs designed to meet the needs of Paralympic athletes.
Meet Your Milano Cortina Mascots: Tina and Milo
The official mascots of Milano Cortina 2026 are two cute stoats named Milo and Tina. The latter is the light-haired mascot representing the Winter Olympic Games, while her darker-haired younger brother Milo is the face of the Paralympic Winter Games. Milo was born without a leg and uses his tail to help him walk. Their names recall two of the star cities of the Games: Milo for Milan, Tina for Cortina d'Ampezzo.
Tina and Milo will not be alone. Along with them will be six snowdrops called âthe Flo.â These six little flowers symbolize rebirth.

The Path of the Olympic Flame
Between December 6, 2025, and February 6, 2026, the Olympic flame will travel nearly 7,500 miles through 20 regions and 110 provinces. The Olympic torch, named Essential, has a minimal design intended to make the flame the undisputed protagonist of the event. (And yes, the

Everything is ready, or almost ready, for the [2026 Winter Olympics](https://www.wired.com/tag/olympics/) in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo in northern Italy.

## When Is the Opening Ceremony?
Although there are competitions scheduled for February 4, the ceremony that will officially decree the start of the Games is set for February 6. Hereâs [how to watch](https://www.wired.com/story/how-to-watch-winter-olympics-2026/).
## Whatâs Happening at the Opening Ceremony?

## Where Will the Olympic Flame Be During the 2026 Games?
For the first time, there will be two Olympic flame cauldrons: one at the Arco della Pace in Milan and another in downtown Cortina.
## The 2026 Olympic Medals Have a Sleek New Design
Inspired by the timeless elegance of the Italian avant-garde, the Milano Cortina 2026 medals have a geometric, pure, and simple design. They were made in collaboration with the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato, which makes coins and stamps for Italy. The line in the center represents continuous change: an energy that embodies the Olympics and Paralympics.

## All the Event Venues You Need to Know About
All Olympic events are divided into four different main geographical zones, each hosting different events.
- **Milan**: opening and closing ceremonies, ice hockey, speed skating, figure skating, and short track
- **Valtellina**: freestyle skiing and snowboarding (in Livigno), mountaineering, and men's alpine skiing
- **Cortina**: curling and sliding sports (in Cortina), women's alpine skiing, and biathlon
- **Val di Fiemme**: ski jumping and cross-country skiing
## The Winter Olympicsâ New Accessible Podiums
Made of wood and metal, the podiums athletes will appear on to accept their medals are adapted to the different disciplines, individuals, and teams. In fact, they can accommodate up to 10 athletes per medal and are fully accessible, thanks to fall-preventing ramps and curbs designed to meet the needs of Paralympic athletes.
## Meet Your Milano Cortina Mascots: Tina and Milo
The official mascots of Milano Cortina 2026 are two cute stoats named Milo and Tina. The latter is the light-haired mascot representing the Winter Olympic Games, while her darker-haired younger brother Milo is the face of the Paralympic Winter Games. Milo was born without a leg and uses his tail to help him walk. Their names recall two of the star cities of the Games: Milo for Milan, Tina for Cortina d'Ampezzo.

| Readable Markdown | Everything is ready, or almost ready, for the [2026 Winter Olympics](https://www.wired.com/tag/olympics/) in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo in northern Italy.

Hereâs [how to watch](https://www.wired.com/story/how-to-watch-winter-olympics-2026/).

- **Milan**: opening and closing ceremonies, ice hockey, speed skating, figure skating, and short track
- **Valtellina**: freestyle skiing and snowboarding (in Livigno), mountaineering, and men's alpine skiing
- **Cortina**: curling and sliding sports (in Cortina), women's alpine skiing, and biathlon
- **Val di Fiemme**: ski jumping and cross-country skiing

The 2026 Winter Olympics [can be watched live](https://www.wired.com/story/how-to-watch-winter-olympics-2026/) in the US on NBC and Peacock. Some events will be viewable on NBCOlympics.com.
