Things You'll Need
Cleaning your front-load washing machine removes odors, mildew, and mold so your clothes come out clean and fresh. Follow this tutorial to clean the drum, gasket, detergent door, filter, and exterior with simple ingredients you already have at home. Plus, we'll provide tips on how often to clean your washer and how to maintain it so it's at its best for every load.
Cleaning a Front-Load Washing Machine
Cleaning influencer Kate Rowley says to wipe the ring on the inside of the machine once per week. Clean the detergent drawer and exterior of the washer with a multi-purpose cleaner. Then, remove the filter and rinse it out. To clean and deodorize the drum, run 1 hot water cycle with baking soda and 1 with vinegar.
Scoop about 2 cups (272 g) of baking soda directly into the front loaderâs drum and close the door.
[1]
If your machine has a cycle specifically for cleaning, then use that setting. Otherwise, a regular cycle with the hottest water setting works just fine.
[2]
Baking soda acts as a mild abrasive and deodorizer, so it scrapes away residue and removes the smell of musty mildew.

3
Once the first cycle is complete, pull out your washerâs detergent dispenser drawer and pour in 2 cups (470Â ml) of distilled white vinegar.
If the detergent compartment fills up before using all the vinegar, pour the rest into the pre-wash or fabric softener compartment.
If you want to leave a more pleasant smell inside the front load washer, add about 10 drops of
lavender essential oil
to the vinegar before pouring it in.
4
Run the same cycle again
Cleaning with vinegar deodorizes and disinfects the inside of your washer.
As an alternative to vinegar and baking soda, toss a
washing machine cleaning tablet
into the drum before the cycle to break down residue.
If your washer has a cleaning cycle, the owner's manual may list specific instructions about when to add the vinegar and baking soda. Be sure to read through the manual so you clean your machine properly.
If your machine is very smelly or if you see large mildew stains, load 2 cups (470Â ml) of bleach into the dispenser drawerâs bleach compartment. Run the hottest wash and rinse cycle available on your machine. If itâs possible, pause the cycle after the machine fills with water and let it sit for 30 minutes. Let the cycle finish, and run one more hot rinse cycle to get rid of any residual bleach or mildew.
[4]
Avoid combining bleach with vinegar since it could create toxic chlorine gas.
[5]
If you already used vinegar, run an additional rinse cycle before adding bleach.

Open the door to your washing front-loading washing machine and locate the ring-shaped rubber gasket that runs along the edges of the opening. Peel apart the rubber flaps to check for any objects that got stuck between them. Common objects you may find include loose hairs, bobby pins, coins, paper clips, and even socks. Scoop the items out and dispose of them properly so they donât damage the gasket or washing machine during the next cycle.
[6]
While youâre
sorting your laundry
, check and empty the pockets on your clothes so itâs less likely for items to get stuck in the gasket.
Put on a pair of rubber gloves if you donât want to touch any residue or mildew with your bare hands.
Avoid pulling the gasket apart with a lot of force so you donât accidentally damage the seal.
Wipe the gasket with hot soapy water or
mildew cleaner
.
Either use a mix of hot water and dish soap in a spray bottle or a commercial cleaner to treat mildew. Spray the cleaning solution directly onto the gasket, making sure it gets between the flaps of rubber. Then, wipe the cleaner up with a towel or cloth.
[7]
You may need several cleaning cloths if the gasket is coated with slimy mildew. Just keep spraying and wiping the gasket until your cloth comes away clean.
Mildew grows on the gasket when it isn't getting dry enough between uses or when your soap leaves behind too much residue.
Deep clean the gasket
with bleach once a month to kill mildew.
Start by diluting

cup (180Â ml) of chlorine bleach into 1 gallon (3.8Â L) of warm water. Put on a pair of rubber gloves and dip a clean cloth into the bleach solution and wipe it over the gasket. Make sure to work the solution in between the flaps of the gasket. After that, dry the gasket off with a fresh cloth.
[8]
If you've already cleaned the gasket with vinegar, rinse it out thoroughly to remove any residue before using bleachâmixing the two can create a toxic gas.
Donât forget to wipe the inside of the washerâs door to remove stains and mildew from the window glass.
If you
notice black mold
spots that are stubborn and stuck in your gasket, put on a
face mask
and scrub the area with a toothbrush in a solution dipped in your bleach solution.

Pull out the dispenser drawer from the top corner of your front-loading washer. Usually, thereâs a button or tab that allows you to completely remove the drawer. Soak the drawer in warm water and dish soap, and scrub any stubborn residue with a toothbrush. Give the drawer a final rinse before drying it off and re-inserting it in your washer.
[9]
If youâre not able to completely remove the drawer, just try to scrub and wipe the drawer as best as you can with a clean damp cloth.
Spray a clean cloth or rag with your multi-purpose cleaner, and gently wipe along all the exterior surfaces of your washing machine. Clean up any lint, dust, and hair that built up on your washer so it doesnât get inside of the drum.
Clear out the washerâs filter
when itâs clogged.
If your washer leaves your clothes wet or the cycle takes longer than usual, then the filter may be clogged. Locate the access door in the bottom left or right corner at the front of the machine. Lay a towel and a shallow dish underneath the door and unscrew the filter lid. Let the excess water drain out into the dish. Then, pull the filter out and rinse it under running water. Use an old toothbrush to scrub away stuck debris before putting the filter back into your washer.
[10]
The filter location may vary depending on your washerâs model, so check the manual if youâre having trouble finding it on your machine.

Chris is on a mission to elevate what it means to be a cleaning professional and has built up Alpine Maids with that goal in mind. Chris has been featured in USA Today, Forbes, and Readers Digest. Alpine Maids received Angie's List Super Service Award for three years in a row from 2016-2018. Chris Willatt, the owner of Alpine Maids, says:
"In a front loader, the filter is usually in the bottom left corner of the machine. Once a month, clean out that filter to remove lint and old laundry detergent."
If youâre only running your washer once or twice a week, itâs okay to clean it out every 3 months. If you use your washer every day or run multiple loads throughout the week, then make time about once a month so youâre able to get rid of mold and mildew before it has a chance to form.
[11]
Purchase a
high-efficiency detergent
specifically designed for your washing machine so it doesnât create too many suds. Only use the recommended amount of detergent for your load size. Using more detergent than you need can cause the soap to build up on your clothes and inside of your machine.
[12]
Pod- and pack-style detergents are safe to use in front load washing machines. For large heavy loads, check the manufacturerâs instructions because they may recommend using 2 to 3 packs.
Once you hear your washer finish the cycle, switch your laundry into your dryer or hang it up so it doesnât sit in the drum. Otherwise, leaving your clothes in the drum could cause mildew or odors to form more easily.
[13]
If you can't switch the load of wet laundry, like if you already have clothes in your dryer, at least crack the washerâs door open so moisture can escape.
After you take clothes out of your washer, run an old towel around the gasket to wipe out any moisture and debris. Be sure to wipe the inside of the washer door as well so there isnât any moisture. Leave the door open so fresh air can get inside your washer and prevent mildew from forming.
[14]
Avoid leaving the washer door open if you have small children because they could climb inside and shut the door behind them.
As soon as the cycle finishes running, pull the dispenser drawer out and remove it completely if youâre able to. That way, you donât trap any moisture so the drawer can dry out. As a bonus, opening the drawer also helps air move into the machine itself, which can make it dry out faster to prevent mold growth.
[15]
Check the dispenser drawer for any mold or mildew growing on the surface each time you remove it.

Expert Answer
The best thing you can do is preventative maintenance. Clean the filter monthly. After you use the washing machine, always leave its door a little bit open, so that you don't give the water time to sit in there, build up, and create that mildew. If it's too late for that, you can use vinegar: pour a good amount of vinegar down in there and run a cycle to hit the mildew. Then open it up, wipe out the lid area that you can access with a microfiber or rag, and then leave the door open to let it air out.
Question
Fabric softener will not dispense into washer, what do I do?
shikhar goliya
Community Answer
It could be that the washer is not leveled, dispenser is clogged, or the washer is getting low water pressure. If your washer is getting low water pressure, check the inlet hose screens for a blockage. To check the screens, turn the water off at the water valves. Remove the hot and cold water hoses from the back of the washing machine. Use a pair of needle-nose pliers or a suitable tool to remove the filters. Clean the filters and reinstall them, and then reattach the hoses.
Question
Will a technician be able to remove the gasket without compromising the seal?
Community Answer
Yes - the seal is manufactured in such a way as to provide a serviceable component.

- Mildew grows on the gasket when it isn't getting dry enough between uses or when your soap leaves behind too much residue.

[**Deep clean the gasket**](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Loading-Washing-Machine-Gasket "Clean a Front Loading Washing Machine Gasket") **with bleach once a month to kill mildew.** Start by diluting 3â4 cup (180 ml) of chlorine bleach into 1 gallon (3.8 L) of warm water. Put on a pair of rubber gloves and dip a clean cloth into the bleach solution and wipe it over the gasket. Make sure to work the solution in between the flaps of the gasket. After that, dry the gasket off with a fresh cloth.[\[8\]](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer#_note-8) X Research source
- If you've already cleaned the gasket with vinegar, rinse it out thoroughly to remove any residue before using bleachâmixing the two can create a toxic gas.
- Donât forget to wipe the inside of the washerâs door to remove stains and mildew from the window glass.
- If you [notice black mold](https://www.wikihow.com/Identify-Black-Mold "Identify Black Mold") spots that are stubborn and stuck in your gasket, put on a [face mask](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=face+mask&crid=3HTO4LW0O6ER&sprefix=face+mask%2Caps%2C156&ref=nb_sb_noss_1&tag=wikihow6253715-20) and scrub the area with a toothbrush in a solution dipped in your bleach solution.

**Remove and clean the detergent dispenser drawer with soapy water.** Pull out the dispenser drawer from the top corner of your front-loading washer. Usually, thereâs a button or tab that allows you to completely remove the drawer. Soak the drawer in warm water and dish soap, and scrub any stubborn residue with a toothbrush. Give the drawer a final rinse before drying it off and re-inserting it in your washer.[\[9\]](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer#_note-9) X Research source
- If youâre not able to completely remove the drawer, just try to scrub and wipe the drawer as best as you can with a clean damp cloth.

2
**Wipe the outside of the washing machine with multi-purpose cleaner.** Spray a clean cloth or rag with your multi-purpose cleaner, and gently wipe along all the exterior surfaces of your washing machine. Clean up any lint, dust, and hair that built up on your washer so it doesnât get inside of the drum.

3
[**Clear out the washerâs filter**](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Washing-Machine-Filter "Clean a Washing Machine Filter") **when itâs clogged.** If your washer leaves your clothes wet or the cycle takes longer than usual, then the filter may be clogged. Locate the access door in the bottom left or right corner at the front of the machine. Lay a towel and a shallow dish underneath the door and unscrew the filter lid. Let the excess water drain out into the dish. Then, pull the filter out and rinse it under running water. Use an old toothbrush to scrub away stuck debris before putting the filter back into your washer.[\[10\]](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer#_note-10) X [Trustworthy Source](https://www.wikihow.com/wikiHow:Delivering-a-Trustworthy-Experience) Consumer Reports Nonprofit organization dedicated to consumer advocacy and product testing [Go to source](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer)
- The filter location may vary depending on your washerâs model, so check the manual if youâre having trouble finding it on your machine.

**Clean your washer every 1â3 months.** If youâre only running your washer once or twice a week, itâs okay to clean it out every 3 months. If you use your washer every day or run multiple loads throughout the week, then make time about once a month so youâre able to get rid of mold and mildew before it has a chance to form.[\[11\]](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer#_note-11) X Research source
2. [](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer#/Image:Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer-Step-11-Version-3.jpg)
2
**Use detergent made for high-efficiency machines.** Purchase a [high-efficiency detergent](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=he+laundry+detergent&crid=QX2KU4IPQD4D&sprefix=he+laundry+detergent%2Caps%2C137&ref=nb_sb_noss_1&tag=wikihow6253715-20) specifically designed for your washing machine so it doesnât create too many suds. Only use the recommended amount of detergent for your load size. Using more detergent than you need can cause the soap to build up on your clothes and inside of your machine.[\[12\]](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer#_note-12) X [Trustworthy Source](https://www.wikihow.com/wikiHow:Delivering-a-Trustworthy-Experience) Consumer Reports Nonprofit organization dedicated to consumer advocacy and product testing [Go to source](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer)
- Pod- and pack-style detergents are safe to use in front load washing machines. For large heavy loads, check the manufacturerâs instructions because they may recommend using 2 to 3 packs.
3. [](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer#/Image:Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer-Step-12-Version-3.jpg)
3
**Remove your laundry right when the cycle finishes.** Once you hear your washer finish the cycle, switch your laundry into your dryer or hang it up so it doesnât sit in the drum. Otherwise, leaving your clothes in the drum could cause mildew or odors to form more easily.[\[13\]](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer#_note-13) X [Trustworthy Source](https://www.wikihow.com/wikiHow:Delivering-a-Trustworthy-Experience) Consumer Reports Nonprofit organization dedicated to consumer advocacy and product testing [Go to source](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer)
- If you can't switch the load of wet laundry, like if you already have clothes in your dryer, at least crack the washerâs door open so moisture can escape.
4. [](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer#/Image:Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer-Step-13-Version-3.jpg)
4
**Dry the gasket and door in between loads.** After you take clothes out of your washer, run an old towel around the gasket to wipe out any moisture and debris. Be sure to wipe the inside of the washer door as well so there isnât any moisture. Leave the door open so fresh air can get inside your washer and prevent mildew from forming.[\[14\]](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer#_note-14) X Research source
- Avoid leaving the washer door open if you have small children because they could climb inside and shut the door behind them.
5. [](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer#/Image:Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer-Step-14-Version-3.jpg)
5
**Remove and air dry the dispenser drawer after each use.** As soon as the cycle finishes running, pull the dispenser drawer out and remove it completely if youâre able to. That way, you donât trap any moisture so the drawer can dry out. As a bonus, opening the drawer also helps air move into the machine itself, which can make it dry out faster to prevent mold growth.[\[15\]](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer#_note-15) X Research source
- Check the dispenser drawer for any mold or mildew growing on the surface each time you remove it.

[How do I get my front load washer to stop smelling?](https://www.wikihow.com/Forum/Discussion-How-Do-I-Get-My-Front-Load-Washer-to-Stop-Smelling)

Then open it up, wipe out the lid area that you can access with a microfiber cloth or rag, and then leave the door open to let it air out.

If your front load washer has a bad odor, first open the door and clean out any small objects or debris that's stuck in the rubber gasket. Spray the gasket down with some hot soapy water and use a rag to wipe out any mildew or scum. For a really strong odor, use a solution of equal parts vinegar and water instead.
If you're still noticing an odor, set the machine to the hottest water setting and add 2 cups (473 mL) of white vinegar to the detergent dispenser. Run the cycle to clean and deodorize the washer's drum.
To prevent your washer from smelling, take out wet clothes as soon as the cycle is finished and leave the door open so it can dry out.

- Question
Fabric softener will not dispense into washer, what do I do?

shikhar goliya
Community Answer
It could be that the washer is not leveled, dispenser is clogged, or the washer is getting low water pressure. If your washer is getting low water pressure, check the inlet hose screens for a blockage. To check the screens, turn the water off at the water valves. Remove the hot and cold water hoses from the back of the washing machine. Use a pair of needle-nose pliers or a suitable tool to remove the filters. Clean the filters and reinstall them, and then reattach the hoses.

If you need to clean your front load washer, start by grabbing the doorâs gasket, which is the ring of rubber that goes between the door and washer. Pull the gasket open a little and remove any foreign objects like coins or nails. Then, use a rag to clean the dust and hair out of the gasket. To clean the drum, pour 1/3 cup of baking soda into the machine, and put 2 cups of white vinegar in the detergent tray. Run the machine on a cleaning cycle and the two agents will react and clean your machine. Read more to learn how to use bleach to clean the machine.

## Cleaning a Front-Load Washing Machine
Cleaning influencer Kate Rowley says to wipe the ring on the inside of the machine once per week. Clean the detergent drawer and exterior of the washer with a multi-purpose cleaner. Then, remove the filter and rinse it out. To clean and deodorize the drum, run 1 hot water cycle with baking soda and 1 with vinegar.
1. [](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer#/Image:Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer-Step-6-Version-3.jpg)
Scoop about 2 cups (272 g) of baking soda directly into the front loaderâs drum and close the door.[\[1\]](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer#_note-1)
2. If your machine has a cycle specifically for cleaning, then use that setting. Otherwise, a regular cycle with the hottest water setting works just fine.[\[2\]](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer#_note-2)
- Baking soda acts as a mild abrasive and deodorizer, so it scrapes away residue and removes the smell of musty mildew.[\[3\]](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer#_note-3)

3. 3
**Once the first cycle is complete, pull out your washerâs detergent dispenser drawer and pour in 2 cups (470 ml) of distilled white vinegar.**
- If the detergent compartment fills up before using all the vinegar, pour the rest into the pre-wash or fabric softener compartment.
- If you want to leave a more pleasant smell inside the front load washer, add about 10 drops of [lavender essential oil](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=lavender+essential+oil&ref=nb_sb_noss&tag=wikihow6253715-20) to the vinegar before pouring it in.
4. 4
**Run the same cycle again**
- Cleaning with vinegar deodorizes and disinfects the inside of your washer.
- As an alternative to vinegar and baking soda, toss a [washing machine cleaning tablet](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=washer+cleaner&crid=67TEGOHI1WVY&sprefix=washer+cleane%2Caps%2C206&ref=nb_sb_noss_2&tag=wikihow6253715-20) into the drum before the cycle to break down residue.
- If your washer has a cleaning cycle, the owner's manual may list specific instructions about when to add the vinegar and baking soda. Be sure to read through the manual so you clean your machine properly.
5. [](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer#/Image:Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer-Step-8-Version-3.jpg)
If your machine is very smelly or if you see large mildew stains, load 2 cups (470 ml) of bleach into the dispenser drawerâs bleach compartment. Run the hottest wash and rinse cycle available on your machine. If itâs possible, pause the cycle after the machine fills with water and let it sit for 30 minutes. Let the cycle finish, and run one more hot rinse cycle to get rid of any residual bleach or mildew.[\[4\]](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer#_note-4)
- Avoid combining bleach with vinegar since it could create toxic chlorine gas.[\[5\]](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer#_note-5) If you already used vinegar, run an additional rinse cycle before adding bleach.
1. [](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer#/Image:Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer-Step-2-Version-3.jpg)
Scoop the items out and dispose of them properly so they donât damage the gasket or washing machine during the next cycle.[\[6\]](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer#_note-6)
- While youâre [sorting your laundry](https://www.wikihow.com/Sort-Laundry "Sort Laundry"), check and empty the pockets on your clothes so itâs less likely for items to get stuck in the gasket.
- Put on a pair of rubber gloves if you donât want to touch any residue or mildew with your bare hands.
- Avoid pulling the gasket apart with a lot of force so you donât accidentally damage the seal.
2. [](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer#/Image:Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer-Step-4-Version-3.jpg)
**Wipe the gasket with hot soapy water or [**mildew cleaner**](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=mildew+cleaner&crid=2LEP9ZDOMEGHR&sprefix=mildew+cleaner%2Caps%2C141&ref=nb_sb_noss_1&tag=wikihow6253715-20).** Either use a mix of hot water and dish soap in a spray bottle or a commercial cleaner to treat mildew. Spray the cleaning solution directly onto the gasket, making sure it gets between the flaps of rubber. Then, wipe the cleaner up with a towel or cloth.[\[7\]](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer#_note-7)
- You may need several cleaning cloths if the gasket is coated with slimy mildew. Just keep spraying and wiping the gasket until your cloth comes away clean.
- Mildew grows on the gasket when it isn't getting dry enough between uses or when your soap leaves behind too much residue.
3. [](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer#/Image:Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer-Step-6-Version-5.jpg)
After that, dry the gasket off with a fresh cloth.[\[8\]](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer#_note-8)
1. [](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer#/Image:Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer-Step-9-Version-3.jpg)
Pull out the dispenser drawer from the top corner of your front-loading washer. Usually, thereâs a button or tab that allows you to completely remove the drawer. Soak the drawer in warm water and dish soap, and scrub any stubborn residue with a toothbrush. Give the drawer a final rinse before drying it off and re-inserting it in your washer.[\[9\]](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer#_note-9)
- If youâre not able to completely remove the drawer, just try to scrub and wipe the drawer as best as you can with a clean damp cloth.
2. [](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer#/Image:Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer-Step-10-Version-3.jpg)
Spray a clean cloth or rag with your multi-purpose cleaner, and gently wipe along all the exterior surfaces of your washing machine. Clean up any lint, dust, and hair that built up on your washer so it doesnât get inside of the drum.
3. [](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer#/Image:Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer-Step-9-Version-5.jpg)
Use an old toothbrush to scrub away stuck debris before putting the filter back into your washer.[\[10\]](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer#_note-10)
- The filter location may vary depending on your washerâs model, so check the manual if youâre having trouble finding it on your machine.

**Chris Willatt, the owner of Alpine Maids, says:** "In a front loader, the filter is usually in the bottom left corner of the machine. Once a month, clean out that filter to remove lint and old laundry detergent."
1. [](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer#/Image:Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer-Step-10-Version-5.jpg)
If youâre only running your washer once or twice a week, itâs okay to clean it out every 3 months. If you use your washer every day or run multiple loads throughout the week, then make time about once a month so youâre able to get rid of mold and mildew before it has a chance to form.[\[11\]](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer#_note-11)
2. [](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer#/Image:Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer-Step-11-Version-3.jpg)
Purchase a [high-efficiency detergent](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=he+laundry+detergent&crid=QX2KU4IPQD4D&sprefix=he+laundry+detergent%2Caps%2C137&ref=nb_sb_noss_1&tag=wikihow6253715-20) specifically designed for your washing machine so it doesnât create too many suds. Only use the recommended amount of detergent for your load size. Using more detergent than you need can cause the soap to build up on your clothes and inside of your machine.[\[12\]](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer#_note-12)
- Pod- and pack-style detergents are safe to use in front load washing machines. For large heavy loads, check the manufacturerâs instructions because they may recommend using 2 to 3 packs.
3. [](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer#/Image:Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer-Step-12-Version-3.jpg)
Once you hear your washer finish the cycle, switch your laundry into your dryer or hang it up so it doesnât sit in the drum. Otherwise, leaving your clothes in the drum could cause mildew or odors to form more easily.[\[13\]](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer#_note-13)
- If you can't switch the load of wet laundry, like if you already have clothes in your dryer, at least crack the washerâs door open so moisture can escape.
4. [](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer#/Image:Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer-Step-13-Version-3.jpg)
After you take clothes out of your washer, run an old towel around the gasket to wipe out any moisture and debris. Be sure to wipe the inside of the washer door as well so there isnât any moisture. Leave the door open so fresh air can get inside your washer and prevent mildew from forming.[\[14\]](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer#_note-14)
- Avoid leaving the washer door open if you have small children because they could climb inside and shut the door behind them.
5. [](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer#/Image:Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer-Step-14-Version-3.jpg)
As soon as the cycle finishes running, pull the dispenser drawer out and remove it completely if youâre able to. That way, you donât trap any moisture so the drawer can dry out. As a bonus, opening the drawer also helps air move into the machine itself, which can make it dry out faster to prevent mold growth.[\[15\]](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer#_note-15)
- Check the dispenser drawer for any mold or mildew growing on the surface each time you remove it.

- Question
Fabric softener will not dispense into washer, what do I do?

shikhar goliya
Community Answer
It could be that the washer is not leveled, dispenser is clogged, or the washer is getting low water pressure. If your washer is getting low water pressure, check the inlet hose screens for a blockage. To check the screens, turn the water off at the water valves. Remove the hot and cold water hoses from the back of the washing machine. Use a pair of needle-nose pliers or a suitable tool to remove the filters. Clean the filters and reinstall them, and then reattach the hoses.
- Question
Will a technician be able to remove the gasket without compromising the seal?

About This Article
[Article SummaryX](https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Front-Load-Washer#summary_wrapper)
