IOC president Thomas Bach has said that he expects [more than 80% of the 11,500 people staying in the athletes’ village](https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2021/may/20/organisers-of-tokyo-olympics-press-ahead-despite-covid-fears) to be vaccinated by 23 July.
All athletes have been offered vaccinations thanks to a special deal between Pfizer-BioNTech and the IOC.
If [an athlete does test positive](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/57604425), they could be moved to an isolation hotel, ruling them out of their events.

The first global pandemic in more than 100 years, COVID-19 has spread throughout the world at an unprecedented speed. At the time of writing, 4.5 million cases have been confirmed and more than 300,000 people have died due to the virus.
