Chinese New Year is celebrated the world over: from a 23-day festival in the country itself, to fireworks in Las Vegas and a parade through London’s Trafalgar Square.
But little is said about Songkran – the equally exciting Thai equivalent. Aquaphobes, avert your eyes now…
What is Songkran?
Songkran is an all-out water war across the country (Shutterstock)
Songkran – also known as the Water Splashing Festival – is a celebration to mark the start of the Buddhist New Year. The festival is an all-out water war, with unsuspecting victims and eager participants being blasted by high powered super-soakers.
The word “Songkran” comes from Sanskrit, meaning transformation or change; namely, the changing of the zodiac signs. Songkran is timed to coincide with the rising of Aries on the astrological chart.
During this Unesco-inscribed festival, Buddha images are bathed in scented water, and younger Thais show respect to monks and elders by sprinkling water over their hands and receive their blessings in return. It is also a time to pray for loved ones who have passed away.
Parades, dancing and folk entertainment mark the lunar change too, although getting wet is what Songkran is most famed for. It is more than just fun though, as the water symbolises purification and the washing away of the previous year.
Why is Songkran so special?
You can use squirt guns, buckets or water balloons (Shutterstock)
Songkran is the epitome of fun. In a nutshell: vast quantities of water are stored in whatever vessels take your fancy (squirt guns, buckets and water balloons are all acceptable), before being used to saturate your nearest and dearest.
It’s a welcome reprieve from the intense heat but has a serious side too, the original focus being on enriching religious intentions and building family bonds.
Visitors who find themselves in the country during Songkran can join in on the festivities, but as with any religious festival, yet it’s vital to be respectful.
When and where can I join in?
Buddha images are bathed as part of celebrations for the start of Buddhist New Year (Shutterstock)
Songkran runs between 13 and 15 April, and festivities can be found countrywide.
There are usually parades of flower-laden floats in Khon Kaen in
eastern Thailand,
and water fights on Bangkok’s Khao San Road. The northern city of Chiang Mai celebrates with the most gusto. It’s practically pandemonium – people literally flood the streets.
April is often Thailand’s hottest month, and thus cooling foods are typically on the menu during the Songkran festival. It is also the peak of the mango season, so expect to find plenty of mango sticky rice, a firm-favourite dessert in Thailand. Another summer cooler is
khao
chae
, a rice dish soaked in jasmine-scented iced water, served alongside savoury side dishes.
What else should I do in Thailand in April?
Head north, it’s cooler in the highlights (Pictured: Doi Inthanon Mountain, Shutterstock)
Thailand is moving from high season into hot season. Some services are reduced and it can be soul-sappingly muggy so avoid densely populated areas.

Instead, head north – [it’s cooler in the highlands](https://www.wanderlustmagazine.com/inspiration/thailand-trip-planner/). Alternatively, cool off on the islands and beaches in the south: dive off Ko Tao, climb in Krabi, kayak around Phuket or hang in a hammock wherever you like.
