| Boilerpipe Text | Key Takeaways
Mild to moderate COVID-19 usually lasts seven to 14 days, while severe cases can take weeks.
Vaccination and prior immunity often reduce illness duration and severity.
Long COVID can affect anyone, with symptoms lasting months or longer, especially in unvaccinated or severe cases.
On average, a mild to moderate COVID-19 infection can last for one to two weeks.
However, how quickly you bounce back from a COVID-19 infection depends on various factors, including your health before the infection, any underlying conditions you may have, and which variant of the virus you contracted.

How Long Does Mild to Moderate COVID-19 Last?
Mild to moderate COVID-19 infections typically last seven to 14 days, though some people
recover
in just a few days, while others may take weeks.
With that said, recovery varies depending on the individual. Some people never develop symptoms, some experience mild to moderate illness, and others face severe disease.
What to Expect With Severe COVID-19 Illness
Severe or critical COVID-19 illness is most common in people over 50 and those with weakened immune systems or multiple health conditions. These infections often require hospitalization and can take several weeks or even months to recover from.
Recovery time depends on how severe the COVID-19 infection is, whether complications such as pneumonia, blood clots, or organ damage occur, and if additional infections develop during treatment.
How Your Immunity Affects COVID-19 Recovery
Even if you are
vaccinated
or have natural immunity from a previous infection, you can still catch COVID-19. The severity and length of illness depend on the strain that caused your current infection, the strain you were vaccinated against, and how long it’s been since your last infection or vaccination.
Studies suggest that infections in vaccinated people can last as little as two days and are generally milder than infections in unvaccinated individuals.
The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) recommends vaccination for all adults 19 and older—especially those never vaccinated, people over 65, and those at higher risk for severe illness.
How Long Do Long COVID Symptoms Last?
Long COVID
, also called post-COVID syndrome, happens when symptoms last for three months or more after a COVID-19 infection.
Even people with mild cases can develop long COVID. According to the World Health Organization, about six in 100 people with mild or moderate infections develop long COVID.
Long COVID can cause an evolving set of symptoms. People may experience more than 20 different symptoms during the infection, and these can change, come and go, or continue long after recovery. Symptoms have been reported anywhere from two weeks to months or even years.
What Affects COVID-19 Duration?
The specific variant that causes your COVID-19 infection has a lot to do with how long your illness lasts. However, additional factors can contribute to infection duration, such as:
Your age
Having diabetes
Having high blood pressure (hypertension)
Whether you are immunocompromised
Having obesity
Being pregnant
Can You Shorten How Long COVID Lasts?
Maintaining good health habits can help strengthen your immune system to fight viruses like SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. You can also reduce your risk by practicing good hand hygiene and avoiding contact with people who are sick.
Vaccination
is another important tool. While vaccines don’t provide 100% protection, they can reduce both the severity and duration of COVID-19 if you become infected.
For people at higher risk of severe illness, prescription medications are available. When started within five to seven days of symptom onset, these treatments can help lower the risk of hospitalization or death from COVID-19.

| Readable Markdown | ### Key Takeaways
- Mild to moderate COVID-19 usually lasts seven to 14 days, while severe cases can take weeks.
- Vaccination and prior immunity often reduce illness duration and severity.
- Long COVID can affect anyone, with symptoms lasting months or longer, especially in unvaccinated or severe cases.
On average, a mild to moderate COVID-19 infection can last for one to two weeks. However, how quickly you bounce back from a COVID-19 infection depends on various factors, including your health before the infection, any underlying conditions you may have, and which variant of the virus you contracted.

## How Long Does Mild to Moderate COVID-19 Last?
Mild to moderate COVID-19 infections typically last seven to 14 days, though some people [recover](https://www.verywellhealth.com/covid-recovery-8668894) in just a few days, while others may take weeks.
With that said, recovery varies depending on the individual. Some people never develop symptoms, some experience mild to moderate illness, and others face severe disease.
## What to Expect With Severe COVID-19 Illness
Severe or critical COVID-19 illness is most common in people over 50 and those with weakened immune systems or multiple health conditions. These infections often require hospitalization and can take several weeks or even months to recover from.
Recovery time depends on how severe the COVID-19 infection is, whether complications such as pneumonia, blood clots, or organ damage occur, and if additional infections develop during treatment.
## How Your Immunity Affects COVID-19 Recovery
Even if you are [vaccinated](https://www.verywellhealth.com/how-do-vaccines-work-4153906) or have natural immunity from a previous infection, you can still catch COVID-19.
## How Long Do Long COVID Symptoms Last?
[Long COVID](https://www.verywellhealth.com/covid-19-long-haulers-long-term-effects-5116397), also called post-COVID syndrome, happens when symptoms last for three months or more after a COVID-19 infection.
## What Affects COVID-19 Duration?
The specific variant that causes your COVID-19 infection has a lot to do with how long your illness lasts. However, additional factors can contribute to infection duration, such as:
- Your age
- [Having diabetes](https://www.verywellhealth.com/when-to-expect-covid-19-vaccination-side-effects-5176621)
- Having high blood pressure (hypertension)
- Whether you are immunocompromised
- Having obesity
- Being pregnant
## Can You Shorten How Long COVID Lasts?
Maintaining good health habits can help strengthen your immune system to fight viruses like SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. You can also reduce your risk by practicing good hand hygiene and avoiding contact with people who are sick.
[Vaccination](https://www.verywellhealth.com/covid-19-vaccine-types-5091935) is another important tool.
