Since entering Congress a year ago, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has achieved the status of right-wing media celebrity—a feat she achieved largely by stirring up social media controversies. But the Georgia Republican’s online reach took a hit over the weekend when Twitter permanently suspended her personal account for spreading misinformation about COVID-19. Facebook followed suit on Monday, hitting Greene’s personal account with a 24-hour suspension of its own. And it seems the most influential podcaster in the world is taking note. In an announcement he framed as a precautionary measure, Joe Rogan informed his fans on Sunday that they could follow him on the conservative social media site Gettr. “Just in case shit over at Twitter gets even dumber, I’m here now as well. Rejoice!” Rogan wrote in his inaugural post on Gettr, a Twitter look-alike launched by former Donald Trump aide Jason Miller that bills itself as a “free speech social media platform which fights cancel culture.”  Miller seemed thrilled, telling Insider that “more than 171,000 people signed up for Gettr after Joe Rogan announced he was joining our platform, making Sunday the biggest day for our platform since we launched on July 4.” He added that Rogan “knows that Big Tech censorship is only going to get worse and Gettr’s incredible growth is proof that people are waking up to this dangerous reality and are hungry for an alternative which protects freedom of expression.”  The new year has seen at least one other prominent right-winger booted from social media; according to the Daily Beast, Judicial Watch president Tom Fitton ’s TikTok account has been suspended . “This account was banned due to multiple Community Guidelines violations,” reads a notification on his now blank profile. As for Greene, a Facebook spokesperson told The New York Times that “a post [on her personal account] violated our policies and we have removed it, but removing her account for this violation is beyond the scope of our policies.” Twitter noted in a statement that Greene had repeatedly violated its COVID misinformation policy: “We’ve been clear that, per our strike system for this policy, we will permanently suspend accounts for repeated violations.” (Greene’s Twitter account was temporarily locked at least three times prior to her latest suspension, including in January of last year when she promoted conspiracy theories alleging that Trump won the 2020 election.) In its own statement, Greene’s office wrote that the congresswoman was suspended shortly after tweeting statistics from the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System—a database with unverified figures that conservatives have cited to claim the COVID-19 vaccine is deadly. “Twitter is an enemy to America and can’t handle the truth,” Greene said. “That’s fine, I’ll show America we don’t need them and it’s time to defeat our enemies.”

Since entering Congress a year ago, Rep. **Marjorie Taylor Greene** has achieved the status of right-wing media celebrity—a feat she achieved largely by stirring up social media controversies. But the Georgia Republican’s online reach took a hit over the weekend when Twitter permanently suspended her personal account for spreading misinformation about COVID-19. Facebook [followed](https://www.politico.com/news/2022/01/03/marjorie-taylor-greene-facebook-suspension-526398) suit on Monday, hitting Greene’s personal account with a 24-hour suspension of its own. And it seems the most influential podcaster in the world is taking note. In an announcement he framed as a precautionary measure, **Joe Rogan** informed his fans on Sunday that they could follow him on the conservative social media site Gettr. “Just in case shit over at Twitter gets even dumber, I’m here now as well. Rejoice!” Rogan [wrote](https://www.gettr.com/post/plg71j5d09) in his inaugural post on Gettr, a Twitter look-alike launched by former **Donald Trump** aide **Jason Miller** that [bills](https://www.dailysignal.com/2021/07/09/new-social-media-platform-gettr-says-no-to-cancel-culture-yes-to-free-speech/) itself as a “free speech social media platform which fights cancel culture.” Miller seemed thrilled, telling [Insider](https://www.businessinsider.com/joe-rogan-joins-gettr-a-maga-alternative-to-twitter-after-mtg-ban-2022-1) that “more than 171,000 people signed up for Gettr after Joe Rogan announced he was joining our platform, making Sunday the biggest day for our platform since we launched on July 4.” He added that Rogan “knows that Big Tech censorship is only going to get worse and Gettr’s incredible growth is proof that people are waking up to this dangerous reality and are hungry for an alternative which protects freedom of expression.” The new year has seen at least one other prominent right-winger booted from social media; according to the Daily Beast, Judicial Watch president **Tom Fitton**’s TikTok account has been [suspended](https://www.thedailybeast.com/judicial-watchs-tom-fitton-is-latest-right-winger-banned-from-tiktok-follows-roger-stone). “This account was banned due to multiple Community Guidelines violations,” reads a notification on his now blank profile. As for Greene, a Facebook spokesperson [told](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/01/03/technology/facebook-marjorie-taylor-greene.html) *The* *New York Times* that “a post \[on her personal account\] violated our policies and we have removed it, but removing her account for this violation is beyond the scope of our policies.” Twitter noted in a statement that Greene had repeatedly violated its COVID misinformation policy: “We’ve been clear that, per our strike system for this policy, we will permanently suspend accounts for repeated violations.” (Greene’s Twitter account was temporarily locked at least [three](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/twitter-suspends-rep-marjorie-taylor-greene-again-covid-19-tweets-n1274446) [times](https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/twitter-temporarily-suspends-rep-marjorie-taylor-greene-over-false-covid-n1276414) prior to her latest suspension, including in [January](https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/twitter-temporarily-suspends-gop-rep-marjorie-taylor-greene-n1254557) of last year when she promoted conspiracy theories alleging that Trump won the 2020 election.) In its own statement, Greene’s office wrote that the congresswoman was suspended shortly after tweeting statistics from the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System—a database with unverified figures that conservatives [have cited](https://www.factcheck.org/2021/05/scicheck-tucker-carlson-misrepresents-vaccine-safety-reporting-data/) to claim the COVID-19 vaccine is deadly. “Twitter is an enemy to America and can’t handle the truth,” Greene said. “That’s fine, I’ll show America we don’t need them and it’s time to defeat our enemies.”
