NEW YORK, March 13 (UPI) - The mother of the 6-year-old Michigan boy who allegedly shot and killed a first-grade classmate says her son doesn't understand what happened. In an interview on "Good Morning America" Monday, Tamarla Owens said she has tried to get her son to talk about the shooting death of Kayla Rolland as she and her classmates lined up to go to the library at Buell Elementary School in suburban Flint, Mich. "I talk to my son every night. I really don't feel he knows or understands what happened. He knows something is wrong but he really doesn't know what," Owens said. "Whenever we try to discuss (Kayla) all he does is withdraw from me, so I try not to ask. But he just keeps telling me he's sorry and he didn't mean to do it." Police say the boy brought a stolen .32-caliber semi-automatic handgun to school one day after he and the victim got into a squabble on the school playground. He told investigators he was trying to scare Kayla. The gun belonged to a friend of the family, Jamelle James, 19, who was charged with involuntary manslaughter for allowing the weapon to fall into the boy's hands. The boy said he found the gun under some bedding. Owens defended her decision to leave the boy with her brother and James after the family lost the lease on their house. She said she was working two jobs. Police said drugs and stolen guns were found in what they described as the "crack house" where the boy was living. "I put my child with my brother so he could go to school," Owens said. She said she had no idea what was going on in the house and denied reports she is a drug addict or that she had exposed her children to marijuana use. The state has placed the boy and two siblings - a 5-year-old girl and an 8-year-old boy - in the custody of a maternal aunt. A hearing on neglect charges is scheduled next week. Owens said she would fight for the children's custody and hopes her 6-year-old son will one day be accepted by society. "I blame myself the most for not being able to be there for my kids as much as I really need to, but I needed to work those two jobs to make ends meet," Owens said. "It's hard for me to sleep at night, I haven't slept real good since all of this happened. It's on my conscience about this 6-year-old little girl."
