Even with endless social media apps, streaming services and shows to binge at our disposal, a sense of ennui is inevitable on any given day. However, when boredom hits, it's an opportunity to get creative.
Trying an out-of-the-norm activity can sometimes led to a new hobby you'd never before imagined, like
Pilates
or
tarot card reading
. Or perhaps youâll unleash a secret talent like
vacation-planning
(which has the extra benefit of, you guessed it, a future vacation) or making homemade ice cream.Â
Many of the boredom-busting ideas on this list are totally free, like
reading a book
, writing a note to our troops, or filling up bags of clothes you no longer wear to
donate to charity
. Other activities will get you outside and breathing fresh air, like going for a walk or volunteering. There are also ways to explore virtually, with online tours of museums and
natural parks
.Â
To keep young ones entertained, check out our comprehensive list of
fun things to do with bored kids at home
, and for furry friends, try
this guide to tackling pet boredom
if you suspect Fido needs to put some pep in their step. Whatever you decide, kudos to you for making the most of your and your loved onesâ free time.Â
Update your résumé.
If this task has been on your to-do list for a while, today is the day! Along with updating your résumé, also head over to LinkedIn or your professional website (if you have one) and make sure everything on these platforms is up-to-date, too.
Write a letter to your future self.
What would you want your self 10 years from now to know or remember about your current life? Scribe a note to âfuture youâ by hand and put it away somewhere for safekeeping (you can also write an email to yourself and schedule it to be sent in the future). Another fun idea is to write a letter to a future generation of your family, telling them about your life and your hopes and dreams for theirs.
Draft your monthly goals.
Or weekly. Or even your goals for the year. Who says you need an occasion like New Yearâs or your birthday to set personal resolutions? Remember, these goals can be big or small â aiming to walk an extra 500 steps a day is just as worthy an endeavor as vowing to do the treadmill five times a week for 30 minutes (and youâre more likely to set yourself up for success with the former).
Make plans with friends you havenât seen in a while.
We know it can be awkward to reconnect with folks you havenât spent time with in a bit, but social interactions are great for your health. Plus, having something on the calendar gives you something to look forward to in the weeks or months ahead. Set out to email or text three people youâve lost touch with recently and see if you can get a coffee date or park walk in the books.
Play chess.
Challenge your mind with one of the most famous games there is by playing at a physical board if you have an at-home opponent, or join
Chess.com
to learn how to play, play against a computer, or millions of people online.
Clean out your closets.
How long has this been on your to-do list? A boring afternoon is the perfect time to work on
cleaning all your closets
, or at least tackle the one thatâs been giving you the biggest headache.
Find your new favorite podcast.
Search the internetâs
best podcasts
lists for new ideas, or try out one of the
TODAY podcasts
! Then, stream your picks on Spotify, Apple Music or the podcast platform of your choice.
Start âmy listâ on a streaming service.
Many platforms let you add TV shows or movies to a category like âmy list.â Oftentimes, we let these collections gather for months or years without making any effort to watch what weâve saved. Make today the day you change this.
Go for a walk.
Get the blood flowing with a quick walk â whether itâs at a nearby park or simply around your block. Better yet, ask a neighborhood pal to join and youâll have the added boost of chatting with someone while you stroll.
Take a bath.
Break out the bubble bath, bath bombs, your favorite deep conditioning treatment or exfoliating scrub. Bonus points if you have a stack of magazines or newspapers to catch up on while you soak. Here are
22 products to create the perfect at-home spa
if you need some inspiration.
Phone a friend.
See if a long-lost pal is around for a phone date or video call. Better yet, ring a few friends spontaneously (remember when that was the norm?) or leave a voice memo just to say youâre thinking of them.
Do a yoga video.
Apps like
Alo Moves
and
iFit
bring an impressive lineup of yoga classes to your virtual fingertips with a monthly subscription fee. For no-cost alternatives, try
Yoga With Adriene
and
Yoga with Kassandra
, both of whom have large libraries of free workouts on YouTube.Â
Write in a journal.
Jotting down your thoughts may help you get to the root of your boredom, too. Perhaps youâre angry at a loved one or are feeling stuck at work. No time like now to find out!
Start a gratitude list.
Swap a diary entry for a round-up of
all that youâre grateful for today
, this week or year. This simple exercise may boost your mood, too.Â
Read a book.
Grab something thatâs been collecting dust on your nightstand or pick up a tome from our â
Read With Jennaâ book club
with TODAY host Jenna Bush Hager.
Listen to an audiobook.
Amazonâs
Audible
is a fan-favorite. And
Spotify Premium
now gives users access to more than 200,000 audiobooks, with 15 hours of free listening time each month. Local libraries also have a dizzying array of audiobooks available to check out and download to various devices.
Take a nap.
Are you bored because youâre tired and canât focus on anything? Consider
a snooze bar
. When you wake up, you may be surprised to discover youâre less bored, since you have a renewed and energized sense of focus.
Send snail mail.
Whether itâs a handwritten postcard or youâre gathering items for a care package, youâre sure to put a smile on someoneâs face by taking the time to drop something in the mail for them. It will also make you feel good to know that youâre about to brighten someoneâs day.
Write to a service member.
Instead of penning a note to someone in your inner circle, show a military member you are grateful for their service by sending them a letter. Check out
A Million Thanks
or
Operation Gratitude
, which share guidelines for thanking our troops.
Try a new recipe.
If you like baking or cooking, round up some ingredients (disclaimer: you might have to go shopping, which can be its own boredom hack) and whip up a new recipe. Need a suggestion? We must recommend these
vegan dark chocolate chunk cookies
.
Print a photo album.
Make a beautiful album of prints from a recent getaway or special event.
Artifact Uprising
makes the process of designing a photo album stress-free, and, dare we say, fun. (Plus, you can hire a designer to help if graphic layouts arenât your thing.)
Make a photo memento.
Another nice way to recognize a special vacation or milestone moment is by creating a keepsake â say, a framed photo or picture puzzle.
Minted
, an online marketplace for independent designers, makes this process simple. Upload your photos, select a few preferences (like frame color or font size) and voilĂ , a custom piece of your dreams is in the works.
Go through your stack of mail.
If youâre the type to let a pile of mail grow in your foyer or that basket on your credenza, go through it and deal with whatever bills, notices or statements have come your way. We promise youâll feel much lighter after you do so.Â
Fill bags to bring to charity.
Clothing, appliances, furniture â whatever it is, why not take advantage of a slow day by collecting items to drop off at your local Salvation Army, Goodwill or other donation center? Once youâve given these items away, youâll appreciate the freed up space.
Organize your digital life.
Itâs amazing how productive and self-soothing it can be to go through your phone or computer and delete files, apps and emails you no longer need. You can also create folders to group like items together, and clean up your desktop or home screens. Services like
Clean.Email
and
Unroll.Me
can make the process easier.
Have a âcrafternoon.â
Make an afternoon (or morning, or night) out of doing a craft project that appeals to you. Candle-making, soap-making, lettering â the list goes on.
Tackle a chore.
We know, we know. You might think a cleaning task like vacuuming your apartment or folding piles of laundry is boring, but when paired with a good podcast, audiobook or playlist, the time goes by quickly and youâll feel good about what youâve accomplished.
Meditate.
Work on cultivating a regular meditation practice and you may discover that boredom is really a manifestation of an emotion youâre trying to suppress. Or, you may find that the activity of
focusing on your breath and clearing your mind
works wonders for reducing stress and resetting a bad day. Subscribe to platforms like
SimpleHabit
or
Headspace
for guided meditation tracks.
Do a crossword puzzle.
Thereâs a reason this newspaper classic has endured through the digital age. Theyâre fun, challenging and an easy way to fill a few minutes or more when youâre feeling restless.
Take a virtual museum tour.
During the pandemic, many museums launched impressive online tours, interactive exhibits and virtual activities. Look up your favorite museum, or one youâve been hoping to visit, and see whatâs available. Or, try stalwarts like
The Metropolitan Museum of Art
in New York City, the
Louvre
in Paris, or the
British Museum
in London.
Explore the National Parks virtually.
Dubbed Americaâs Best Idea, you can experience the magic of our countryâs National Parks from the comfort of your home. Lace up your proverbial hiking boots and visit
NationalParks.org
to check out natureâs best as well as Historic Sites from afar.
Rock out to concerts on YouTube.
Type in the name of a musical act or singer you like on YouTube, and youâll likely find dozens of live performances you can watch (and dance to) at home for free. Dim the lights and pretend youâre at a show. (P.S., if you're a sports fan, the same concept works for reliving your home teamâs greatest hits.)
Take an online class.
Masterclass
offers educational courses for an affordable annual fee from greats like Martha Stewart and Ava DuVernay. Many esteemed universities like
Yale
and
Harvard
also provide free access to a select number of classes, and
Coursera
offers free courses as well.
Water your plants.
Okay, plant parents, this is your friendly reminder to water your plants regularly. When youâre feeling stir-crazy, go the extra mile and give them some extra TLC if they need to be repotted or pruned.
Volunteer.
Give back to your community by spending your time helping a local nonprofit. Not sure where to start? Head to
VolunteeMatch.org
to discover volunteering opportunities near you.
Learn a new language.
Or practice a foreign language that you already know. Apps like
Duolingo
and
Babbel
make the endeavor affordable and straightforward.
Knock out a home improvement project.
Any artwork need mounting? Garage in need of some fresh paint? How about the deck? You get the idea. Whatever task you take on, just make sure itâs one you can handle on your own and not something that requires a professional.
Check the recycling.
If you live in a building or complex with a shared recycling center, glance through the paper recycling bin for any gently used magazines or newspapers your neighbors may have discarded. You may find you love a particular publication after devouring it cover to cover and decide to subscribe.
Plan a vacation â even if you donât plan on taking it.
Watch YouTube videos about a dream destination, create a faux itinerary based on your research and plot out points of interest on Google Maps. Or, maybe âwindow shoppingâ itineraries on a tour operatorâs website is enough to snap you out of a funk. (
Trafalgarâs National Parks and Native Trails of the Dakotas
or
Contikiâs Road to Croatia
, anyone?) The act of escapism will jolt you out of your boredom and you can bookmark any research for future use.
Mix up a snazzy cocktail or mocktail.
Who said there has to be a special occasion to drink a fancy drink? Go wild garnishing a Bloody Mary to your heartâs content, or creating the Cosmopolitan of your dreams. Try to look up recipes that will teach you a new bar skill you didnât know, like using bitters or making a fanned strawberry garnish.Â
Make breakfast for tomorrow.
Your future self will thank you when you wake up to delicious
strawberry overnight oats
, or just have to heat up a slice of frittata.
Count up how many states and countries youâve visited.
Oh, the places you have gone! If youâve never tallied up how many of the 50 states or nearly 200 countries youâve visited, itâs a nice exercise.
VisitedPlaces.com
is an online tool you can use to see how many states and countries youâve traveled to in your lifetime.
AmCharts.com
is another good virtual tool for tracking domestic travel.Â
Get ahead on your taxes.
Itâs always tax season, folks. This can be as simple as gathering tax forms youâve received throughout the year (virtually or physically) and putting them in a clearly marked folder, or as elaborate as researching the best software options or local accountants to help you file your next round of taxes.Â
Shred paperwork.
Speaking of taxes, every so often, itâs a good idea to shred tax-related paperwork and other documents for which you no longer need a hard copy. The IRS recommends keeping records for three years from the date you filed your original return or two years from the date you paid the tax, whichever is later, if you file a claim for credit or refund after you filed your return. You can read more detailed periods of limitations that apply to income tax returns
here
.
Make a vision board.
If youâre feeling blah, this inspirational exercise can help you reset your intentions and get clear on what you hope to achieve. Hereâs
exactly how to make a vision board
. (And no, it doesnât need to be done in January.)
Toss expired goods from your freezer, fridge or pantry.
Ditto for your collection of cleaning supplies, makeup and other personal care items. Youâll wonder why you didnât do this months ago once youâre floating high post-cleanup.Â
Exercise.
Run, skip, play tennis, play pickleballâŠthe point is to do something that gets you moving; it doesnât matter what it is. Pro-tip: Tell yourself you only have to work out for 10 minutes and then youâre free to quit. Nine times out of 10, youâll keep going past the 10-minute mark, and the time or two you donât? You still got your heart pumping for 10 minutes.
Go somewhere new in the neighborhood.
Perhaps thereâs a coffee shop youâve walked by a bunch of times but have yet to pop into, or a park you drive by often but have never explored by foot. Carve out a few hours to venture to new frontiers, a stoneâs throw or so from home.
Walk a dog for a friend.
No pet (yet) but love animals? Walk a dog for a friend or family member. Theyâll be grateful for the help, and youâll quell your boredom by spending time with a sweet pup.Â
Take a personality test.
Â
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator
is the most popular and trusted one on the market. More than 70 years of science-backed research has gone into it, and youâll have your results in about 30 minutes.
Plant a garden.
Cultivate your green thumb by planting some flower, fruit, herb or vegetable seeds in your yard (youâll want to research this a bit first). If you donât have outdoor space, we can walk you through
how to start an indoor herb garden
from start to garnish.
Infuse your water.
You likely arenât drinking enough water to stay hydrated throughout the day. One trick to ensure you drink more water is to make it taste better. Jazz up a pitcher of water with sliced cucumber, mint or lemon slices. Not only will it taste great, but youâll feel like youâre indulging in a fancy spa experience at home.
Ponder some feel-good quotes.
Invest in a copy of
Bartlettâs Familiar Quotations
(you can also download the official app at that link) so you can be inspired by words of wisdom for any mood. We also have a
comprehensive assortment of quotes for lifeâs various moments
.
Sign up for a new challenge.
Youâll want to pick something that suits your interests and goals, and a quick online search will reveal so many choices. To get the wheels turning, may we suggest
Veganuary
(going plant-based for all of January â or any month);
the couch to 5K nine-week running program
, or
NaNoWriMo
(a quest to write a 50,000-word novel in 30 days, typically November)? The world is your obstacle oyster.
Organize your desk.
Chances are, your desk could use a spruce-up. Carve out a few minutes to clean paperwork off your desk, corral writing utensils and toss out-dated sticky notes. Or, go ahead and purchase a paperweight or plant, order a photo print, (or grab a picture frame thatâs displayed elsewhere) or set out a colorful objet dâart so you can add some pizazz to the space.
Do a subscription audit.
These days, itâs normal to have many aspects of your life on autopilot like household items and pantry subscriptions on ecommerce sites, online workout or educational platforms and entertainment streaming services. But if you donât take, say, a choline supplement anymore or are out of new episodes to watch of the only show you stream on a given service, these subscriptions are straining your wallet. Thatâs why when boredom strikes, itâs a great opportunity to do an audit of the subscriptions and memberships you no longer need and take a few minutes to cancel the app, service or other recurring payment commitment you no longer desire.
Catch the sunset.
Or if youâre an early bird, head out to see the sunrise. Once youâre outside, you can snap a few photos and share with loved ones, or have a quiet moment of reflection and deep breathing. Make an effort to note the colors of the sky and how the palette shifts with every minute that passes.
Schedule a doctorâs appointment.
If youâve been putting off arranging a doctorâs appointment â whether an annual physical, follow-up with a specialist or mammogram â today might be an opportune time to book that visit. Trust us, youâll feel relieved and proud of yourself for taking this step to look after your health, and glad to check an irksome item off your lifeâs administrative tasks list.
Embark on a cloudspotting adventure.
When boredom creeps up, heading out into the natural elements and contemplating the weather can be an antidote to your restlessness. Simply walk outside your front door and gaze up at the sky and observe the various shapes of the clouds and their shifting shapes. On a rainy day, grab a poncho and your brolly and marvel at the intensity of the drops. On a clear day, just get outside and relish the beauty of the sky or breeze on your shoulders.
Draw what you see.
Not an artist? No problem. The mere act of sketching your surroundings or an item in your household can snap you out of a boredom funk and even help you feel less stressed. If you think drawing sounds too hard, grab an adult coloring book and some markers or crayons, and just fill the space inside the lines with whatever colors your inner Picasso-like heart wants.  |

Even with endless social media apps, streaming services and shows to binge at our disposal, a sense of ennui is inevitable on any given day. However, when boredom hits, it's an opportunity to get creative.
Trying an out-of-the-norm activity can sometimes led to a new hobby you'd never before imagined, like [Pilates](https://www.today.com/health/diet-fitness/pilates-exercises-rcna26346) or [tarot card reading](https://www.today.com/life/best-tarot-decks-t269033). Or perhaps youâll unleash a secret talent like [vacation-planning](https://www.today.com/life/holidays/christmas-getaways-rcna45006) (which has the extra benefit of, you guessed it, a future vacation) or making homemade ice cream.
Many of the boredom-busting ideas on this list are totally free, like [reading a book](https://www.today.com/shop/books), writing a note to our troops, or filling up bags of clothes you no longer wear to [donate to charity](https://www.today.com/food/news/taylor-swift-food-bank-donations-eras-tour-rcna99288). Other activities will get you outside and breathing fresh air, like going for a walk or volunteering. There are also ways to explore virtually, with online tours of museums and [natural parks](https://www.today.com/money/travel/us-national-parks-travel-reservations-visit-rcna23901).
To keep young ones entertained, check out our comprehensive list of [fun things to do with bored kids at home](https://www.today.com/parents/47-fun-things-do-bored-kids-home-t182716), and for furry friends, try [this guide to tackling pet boredom](https://www.today.com/style/how-tell-if-your-pet-bored-what-do-about-it-2D80172674) if you suspect Fido needs to put some pep in their step. Whatever you decide, kudos to you for making the most of your and your loved onesâ free time.
1. **Update your résumé.** If this task has been on your to-do list for a while, today is the day! Along with updating your résumé, also head over to LinkedIn or your professional website (if you have one) and make sure everything on these platforms is up-to-date, too.
2. **Write a letter to your future self.** What would you want your self 10 years from now to know or remember about your current life? Scribe a note to âfuture youâ by hand and put it away somewhere for safekeeping (you can also write an email to yourself and schedule it to be sent in the future). Another fun idea is to write a letter to a future generation of your family, telling them about your life and your hopes and dreams for theirs.
3. **Draft your monthly goals.** Or weekly.
4. **Make plans with friends you havenât seen in a while.** We know it can be awkward to reconnect with folks you havenât spent time with in a bit, but social interactions are great for your health. Plus, having something on the calendar gives you something to look forward to in the weeks or months ahead. Set out to email or text three people youâve lost touch with recently and see if you can get a coffee date or park walk in the books.
5. **Play chess.** Challenge your mind with one of the most famous games there is by playing at a physical board if you have an at-home opponent, or join [Chess.com](https://www.chess.com/) to learn how to play, play against a computer, or millions of people online.
6. **Clean out your closets.** How long has this been on your to-do list? A boring afternoon is the perfect time to work on [cleaning all your closets](https://www.today.com/home/how-often-you-should-clean-out-all-your-closets-right-t103551), or at least tackle the one thatâs been giving you the biggest headache.
7. **Find your new favorite podcast.** Search the internetâs [best podcasts](https://www.today.com/video/best-podcasts-playlists-and-more-that-will-have-you-hooked-150298181722) lists for new ideas, or try out one of the [TODAY podcasts](https://www.today.com/podcasts)! Then, stream your picks on Spotify, Apple Music or the podcast platform of your choice.
8. **Start âmy listâ on a streaming service.** Many platforms let you add TV shows or movies to a category like âmy list.â Oftentimes, we let these collections gather for months or years without making any effort to watch what weâve saved. Make today the day you change this.
9. **Go for a walk.** Get the blood flowing with a quick walk â whether itâs at a nearby park or simply around your block. Better yet, ask a neighborhood pal to join and youâll have the added boost of chatting with someone while you stroll.
10. **Take a bath.** Break out the bubble bath, bath bombs, your favorite deep conditioning treatment or exfoliating scrub. Bonus points if you have a stack of magazines or newspapers to catch up on while you soak. Here are [22 products to create the perfect at-home spa](https://www.today.com/shop/self-care-bath-products-t244182) if you need some inspiration.
11. **Phone a friend.** See if a long-lost pal is around for a phone date or video call. Better yet, ring a few friends spontaneously (remember when that was the norm?) or leave a voice memo just to say youâre thinking of them.
12. **Do a yoga video.** Apps like [Alo Moves](https://www.alomoves.com/) and [iFit](https://www.ifit.com/apps) bring an impressive lineup of yoga classes to your virtual fingertips with a monthly subscription fee. For no-cost alternatives, try [Yoga With Adriene](https://www.youtube.com/user/yogawithadriene) and [Yoga with Kassandra](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCX32D3gKXENrhOXdZjWWtMA), both of whom have large libraries of free workouts on YouTube.
13. **Write in a journal.** Jotting down your thoughts may help you get to the root of your boredom, too. Perhaps youâre angry at a loved one or are feeling stuck at work. No time like now to find out\!
14. **Start a gratitude list.** Swap a diary entry for a round-up of [all that youâre grateful for today](https://www.today.com/video/how-to-practice-gratitude-and-develop-positive-self-talk-153519173574), this week or year. This simple exercise may boost your mood, too.
15. **Read a book.** Grab something thatâs been collecting dust on your nightstand or pick up a tome from our â[Read With Jennaâ book club](https://www.today.com/shop/read-jenna-book-club-list-today-s-jenna-bush-hager-t164652) with TODAY host Jenna Bush Hager.
16. **Listen to an audiobook.** Amazonâs [Audible](https://www.audible.com/) is a fan-favorite. And [Spotify Premium](https://www.spotify.com/us/audiobooks/) now gives users access to more than 200,000 audiobooks, with 15 hours of free listening time each month. Local libraries also have a dizzying array of audiobooks available to check out and download to various devices.
17. **Take a nap.** Are you bored because youâre tired and canât focus on anything? Consider [a snooze bar](https://www.today.com/health/sleep/how-long-should-naps-be-rcna71981). When you wake up, you may be surprised to discover youâre less bored, since you have a renewed and energized sense of focus.
18. **Send snail mail.** Whether itâs a handwritten postcard or youâre gathering items for a care package, youâre sure to put a smile on someoneâs face by taking the time to drop something in the mail for them. It will also make you feel good to know that youâre about to brighten someoneâs day.
19. **Write to a service member.** Instead of penning a note to someone in your inner circle, show a military member you are grateful for their service by sending them a letter. Check out [A Million Thanks](https://amillionthanks.org/letter/) or [Operation Gratitude](https://www.operationgratitude.com/letters/), which share guidelines for thanking our troops.
20. **Try a new recipe.** If you like baking or cooking, round up some ingredients (disclaimer: you might have to go shopping, which can be its own boredom hack) and whip up a new recipe. Need a suggestion? We must recommend these [vegan dark chocolate chunk cookies](https://www.today.com/recipes/vegan-dark-chocolate-chunk-cookies-recipe-t139724).
21. **Print a photo album.** Make a beautiful album of prints from a recent getaway or special event. [Artifact Uprising](https://www.artifactuprising.com/) makes the process of designing a photo album stress-free, and, dare we say, fun. (Plus, you can hire a designer to help if graphic layouts arenât your thing.)
22. **Make a photo memento.** Another nice way to recognize a special vacation or milestone moment is by creating a keepsake â say, a framed photo or picture puzzle. [Minted](https://www.minted.com/), an online marketplace for independent designers, makes this process simple. Upload your photos, select a few preferences (like frame color or font size) and voilĂ , a custom piece of your dreams is in the works.
23. **Go through your stack of mail.** If youâre the type to let a pile of mail grow in your foyer or that basket on your credenza, go through it and deal with whatever bills, notices or statements have come your way. We promise youâll feel much lighter after you do so.
24. **Fill bags to bring to charity.** Clothing, appliances, furniture â whatever it is, why not take advantage of a slow day by collecting items to drop off at your local Salvation Army, Goodwill or other donation center? Once youâve given these items away, youâll appreciate the freed up space.
25. **Organize your digital life.** Itâs amazing how productive and self-soothing it can be to go through your phone or computer and delete files, apps and emails you no longer need. You can also create folders to group like items together, and clean up your desktop or home screens. Services like [Clean.Email](https://clean.email/) and [Unroll.Me](https://unroll.me/) can make the process easier.
26. **Have a âcrafternoon.â** Make an afternoon (or morning, or night) out of doing a craft project that appeals to you. Candle-making, soap-making, lettering â the list goes on.
27. **Tackle a chore.** We know, we know. You might think a cleaning task like vacuuming your apartment or folding piles of laundry is boring, but when paired with a good podcast, audiobook or playlist, the time goes by quickly and youâll feel good about what youâve accomplished.
28. **Meditate.** Work on cultivating a regular meditation practice and you may discover that boredom is really a manifestation of an emotion youâre trying to suppress. Or, you may find that the activity of [focusing on your breath and clearing your mind](https://www.today.com/tmrw/how-meditate-guide-meditating-beginners-t199233) works wonders for reducing stress and resetting a bad day. Subscribe to platforms like [SimpleHabit](https://www.simplehabit.com/) or [Headspace](https://www.headspace.com/) for guided meditation tracks.
29. **Do a crossword puzzle.** Thereâs a reason this newspaper classic has endured through the digital age. Theyâre fun, challenging and an easy way to fill a few minutes or more when youâre feeling restless.
30. **Take a virtual museum tour.** During the pandemic, many museums launched impressive online tours, interactive exhibits and virtual activities. Look up your favorite museum, or one youâve been hoping to visit, and see whatâs available. Or, try stalwarts like [The Metropolitan Museum of Art](https://www.metmuseum.org/art/online-features/met-360-project) in New York City, the [Louvre](https://www.louvre.fr/en/online-tours) in Paris, or the [British Museum](https://www.britishmuseum.org/blog/how-explore-british-museum-home) in London.
31. **Explore the National Parks virtually.** Dubbed Americaâs Best Idea, you can experience the magic of our countryâs National Parks from the comfort of your home. Lace up your proverbial hiking boots and visit [NationalParks.org](https://www.nationalparks.org/connect/blog/take-virtual-visit-national-park) to check out natureâs best as well as Historic Sites from afar.
32. **Rock out to concerts on YouTube.** Type in the name of a musical act or singer you like on YouTube, and youâll likely find dozens of live performances you can watch (and dance to) at home for free. Dim the lights and pretend youâre at a show. (P.S., if you're a sports fan, the same concept works for reliving your home teamâs greatest hits.)
33. **Take an online class.** [Masterclass](https://www.masterclass.com/) offers educational courses for an affordable annual fee from greats like Martha Stewart and Ava DuVernay. Many esteemed universities like [Yale](https://oyc.yale.edu/) and [Harvard](https://pll.harvard.edu/catalog/free) also provide free access to a select number of classes, and [Coursera](https://www.coursera.org/collections/popular-free-courses) offers free courses as well.
34. **Water your plants.** Okay, plant parents, this is your friendly reminder to water your plants regularly. When youâre feeling stir-crazy, go the extra mile and give them some extra TLC if they need to be repotted or pruned.
35. **Volunteer.** Give back to your community by spending your time helping a local nonprofit. Not sure where to start? Head to [VolunteeMatch.org](https://www.volunteermatch.org/) to discover volunteering opportunities near you.
36. **Learn a new language.** Or practice a foreign language that you already know. Apps like [Duolingo](https://www.duolingo.com/) and [Babbel](https://www.babbel.com/) make the endeavor affordable and straightforward.
37. **Knock out a home improvement project.** Any artwork need mounting? Garage in need of some fresh paint? How about the deck? You get the idea. Whatever task you take on, just make sure itâs one you can handle on your own and not something that requires a professional.
38. **Check the recycling.** If you live in a building or complex with a shared recycling center, glance through the paper recycling bin for any gently used magazines or newspapers your neighbors may have discarded. You may find you love a particular publication after devouring it cover to cover and decide to subscribe.
39. **Plan a vacation â even if you donât plan on taking it.** Watch YouTube videos about a dream destination, create a faux itinerary based on your research and plot out points of interest on Google Maps. Or, maybe âwindow shoppingâ itineraries on a tour operatorâs website is enough to snap you out of a funk. ([Trafalgarâs National Parks and Native Trails of the Dakotas](https://www.trafalgar.com/en-us/tours/national-parks-and-native-trails-of-the-dakotas) or [Contikiâs Road to Croatia](https://www.contiki.com/en-us/tours/road-to-croatia), anyone?) The act of escapism will jolt you out of your boredom and you can bookmark any research for future use.
40. **Mix up a snazzy cocktail or mocktail.** Who said there has to be a special occasion to drink a fancy drink? Go wild garnishing a Bloody Mary to your heartâs content, or creating the Cosmopolitan of your dreams. Try to look up recipes that will teach you a new bar skill you didnât know, like using bitters or making a fanned strawberry garnish.
41. **Make breakfast for tomorrow.** Your future self will thank you when you wake up to delicious [strawberry overnight oats](https://www.today.com/recipes/dylan-dreyer-strawberry-overnight-oats-recipe-t286119), or just have to heat up a slice of frittata.
42. **Count up how many states and countries youâve visited.** Oh, the places you have gone! If youâve never tallied up how many of the 50 states or nearly 200 countries youâve visited, itâs a nice exercise. [VisitedPlaces.com](https://visitedplaces.com/states/) is an online tool you can use to see how many states and countries youâve traveled to in your lifetime. [AmCharts.com](https://www.amcharts.com/visited_states/index.php) is another good virtual tool for tracking domestic travel.
43. **Get ahead on your taxes.** Itâs always tax season, folks. This can be as simple as gathering tax forms youâve received throughout the year (virtually or physically) and putting them in a clearly marked folder, or as elaborate as researching the best software options or local accountants to help you file your next round of taxes.
44. **Shred paperwork.** Speaking of taxes, every so often, itâs a good idea to shred tax-related paperwork and other documents for which you no longer need a hard copy. The IRS recommends keeping records for three years from the date you filed your original return or two years from the date you paid the tax, whichever is later, if you file a claim for credit or refund after you filed your return. You can read more detailed periods of limitations that apply to income tax returns [here](https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/how-long-should-i-keep-records#:~:text=Keep%20records%20for%203%20years%20from%20the%20date%20you%20filed,securities%20or%20bad%20debt%20deduction.).
45. **Make a vision board.** If youâre feeling blah, this inspirational exercise can help you reset your intentions and get clear on what you hope to achieve. Hereâs [exactly how to make a vision board](https://www.today.com/life/inspiration/how-to-make-a-vision-board-rcna94062). (And no, it doesnât need to be done in January.)
46. **Toss expired goods from your freezer, fridge or pantry.** Ditto for your collection of cleaning supplies, makeup and other personal care items. Youâll wonder why you didnât do this months ago once youâre floating high post-cleanup.
47. **Exercise.** Run, skip, play tennis, play pickleballâŠthe point is to do something that gets you moving; it doesnât matter what it is. Pro-tip: Tell yourself you only have to work out for 10 minutes and then youâre free to quit. Nine times out of 10, youâll keep going past the 10-minute mark, and the time or two you donât? You still got your heart pumping for 10 minutes.
48. **Go somewhere new in the neighborhood.** Perhaps thereâs a coffee shop youâve walked by a bunch of times but have yet to pop into, or a park you drive by often but have never explored by foot. Carve out a few hours to venture to new frontiers, a stoneâs throw or so from home.
49. **Walk a dog for a friend.** No pet (yet) but love animals? Walk a dog for a friend or family member. Theyâll be grateful for the help, and youâll quell your boredom by spending time with a sweet pup.
50. **Take a personality test.** [The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator](https://www.mbtionline.com/en-US/Products/For-you) is the most popular and trusted one on the market. More than 70 years of science-backed research has gone into it, and youâll have your results in about 30 minutes.
51. **Plant a garden.** Cultivate your green thumb by planting some flower, fruit, herb or vegetable seeds in your yard (youâll want to research this a bit first). If you donât have outdoor space, we can walk you through [how to start an indoor herb garden](https://www.today.com/home/how-grow-indoor-herb-garden-t173247) from start to garnish.
52. **Infuse your water.** You likely arenât drinking enough water to stay hydrated throughout the day. One trick to ensure you drink more water is to make it taste better. Jazz up a pitcher of water with sliced cucumber, mint or lemon slices. Not only will it taste great, but youâll feel like youâre indulging in a fancy spa experience at home.
53. **Ponder some feel-good quotes.** Invest in a copy of [Bartlettâs Familiar Quotations](http://www.bartlettsquotes.com/) (you can also download the official app at that link) so you can be inspired by words of wisdom for any mood. We also have a [comprehensive assortment of quotes for lifeâs various moments](https://www.today.com/life/quotes).
54. **Sign up for a new challenge.** Youâll want to pick something that suits your interests and goals, and a quick online search will reveal so many choices. To get the wheels turning, may we suggest [Veganuary](https://veganuary.com/en-us/) (going plant-based for all of January â or any month); [the couch to 5K nine-week running program](https://www.c25k.com/), or [NaNoWriMo](https://nanowrimo.org/) (a quest to write a 50,000-word novel in 30 days, typically November)? The world is your obstacle oyster.
55. **Organize your desk.** Chances are, your desk could use a spruce-up.
56. **Do a subscription audit.** These days, itâs normal to have many aspects of your life on autopilot like household items and pantry subscriptions on ecommerce sites, online workout or educational platforms and entertainment streaming services.
57. **Catch the sunset.** Or if youâre an early bird, head out to see the sunrise. Once youâre outside, you can snap a few photos and share with loved ones, or have a quiet moment of reflection and deep breathing. Make an effort to note the colors of the sky and how the palette shifts with every minute that passes.
58. **Schedule a doctorâs appointment.** If youâve been putting off arranging a doctorâs appointment â whether an annual physical, follow-up with a specialist or mammogram â today might be an opportune time to book that visit. Trust us, youâll feel relieved and proud of yourself for taking this step to look after your health, and glad to check an irksome item off your lifeâs administrative tasks list.
59. **Embark on a cloudspotting adventure.** When boredom creeps up, heading out into the natural elements and contemplating the weather can be an antidote to your restlessness.
60. **Draw what you see.** Not an artist?

56. **Do a subscription audit.** These days, itâs normal to have many aspects of your life on autopilot like household items and pantry subscriptions on ecommerce sites, online workout or educational platforms and entertainment streaming services.
60. **Draw what you see.** Not an artist? |
