What We Donât Like
Not compatible with all faucets
The Brondell Countertop Water Filtration System is one of those rare finds that blends power with convenience. We found that this countertop water filter delivers crisp, odor-free water while taking up surprisingly little space on the counter. The Brondell Cypress has been independently tested and certified by the
Water Quality Association (WQA)
to meet NSF/ANSI standards 42, 53, and 372, and it uses a patented three-stage Nanotrap filtration system with carbon block technology to capture a wide range of impurities, including bacteria, viruses,
VOCs
, and other harmful chemicals.
During testing, we were impressed by how easy it is to set up. For most standard faucets, installation only required attaching the provided adaptor and tightening it into place, which took around 10 minutes. For those with nonstandard faucets, thereâs an optional under-counter connection available for purchase. When we tried that method, it took closer to 30 minutes to hook up to the main cold water line and install the T-valve. Once connected, the system dispensed fresh, clean water instantly with no waiting required. One thing to note: The Brondell Cypress may not be compatible with pull-down or pull-out faucets, so check your fixture style before purchasing.
The filter trio includes a composite plus filter, a Nanotrap filter, and a carbon block filter. The first and third stages need to be replaced every six months, while the Nanotrap filter lasts about a year. Even with this multi-layer system, the Brondell takes up minimal counter space at just 3.75 x 10.5 x 13.5 inches. Between its sleek design and standout performance, itâs a reliable pick for anyone who wants cleaner, better-tasting water without the installation headaches of a built-in system.

For those focused on fluoride removal, the AlcaPure Countertop Reverse Osmosis Filter proved to be one of the strongest performers we tested. With growing concern that excessive fluoride may cause issues such as tooth discoloration and bone weakness, this model is designed to help address that by removing up to 95 percent of fluoride and as much as 99 percent of other contaminants.

Setup is simple since itâs a countertop model that doesnât need plumbing: Just plug it in and pour water into the front drawer. During testing, we found it removed all traces of any chlorine odor as well as the faint metallic taste from our city tap water. The resulting water tasted light, crisp, and noticeably cleaner. We did notice that the water filtering process does take some patience. It takes roughly 15 minutes to produce a half-gallon of clean water, so youâll likely find yourself refilling the unfiltered water drawer throughout the day.Â
The deviceâs reverse osmosis membrane and filters have been certified by the
International Association of Plumbing & Mechanical Officials
(IAPMO) to NSF standards 42 and 58, but the unit itself is not fully NSF-certified according to the NSF database. The membrane should be replaced every two years, while the other three filters last about a year.

A built-in LED display conveniently signals when itâs time for replacements, taking the guesswork out of maintenance.Â
While the AlcaPure sits on the higher end of the price range and is a bit larger than some of the competition (9.5 x 14.5 x 16.25 inches), its impressive performance, polished design, and highly effective fluoride reduction make it well worth the investment.

Needs an outlet nearby
If youâre looking for a fast, compact, and reliable countertop filter, the Aquasana Clean Water Machine hits all the right notes. This countertop water filter measures on the smaller side at just 9.7 x 8 x 11.6 inches, making it easy to find a countertop spot for it under a cabinet. Youâll also need to place it near an outlet since thatâs part of the magic. This filter uses powered filtration rather than gravity. That design allows you to access filtered water much faster than with most systems. In testing, we found that it only took 15 seconds to filter 16 ounces of water. We did notice a small issue when filling a gallon container, as the dispenser sits only a few inches from the filter housing, leaving limited clearance and some minor splashing.
The filter is easy to operate by simply pressing the rapid-release button to start and tapping it again to stop. We were impressed that this single activated carbon filter cleared up the cloudy appearance of our tap water and removed both metallic and chlorine odors and aftertaste. To boot, this model doesnât remove beneficial minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium. Tested and certified by the WQA, this filter meets NSF standards 42, 53, and 401.
Setup took us about 10 minutes, including flushing the system as the company recommends when replacing the filter. Each filter lasts around six months, and a built-in indicator light lets you know when itâs time for a replacement. The filters are conveniently sold in two-packs for a full year of clean water.

What We Like
Two-gallon capacity

Sleek, durable stainless steel design
No power or plumbing required
What We Donât Like
Large size needs dedicated counter space
The Big Berkey Water Filter offers a high-capacity system that holds more than two gallons of water, making it ideal for households of two to four. While it does take up a fair amount of vertical height (21 inches high), the trade-off is fewer refills and consistently great-tasting water.
This model uses a pair of Black Berkey filter elements, each rated to purify up to 6,000 gallons of water. How long that lasts depends on daily use. A family filtering about two gallons per day could see the filters last as long as eight years, though heavier use will shorten their lifespan. When the flow rate slows or you hit capacity, the filters can be cleaned or replaced. You can also install additional filters to increase the flow rate or double the filtration capacity. For those who need added purification, a separate pair of fluoride and arsenic filters is available. The system doesnât require electricity or a faucet connection, though it does benefit from regular monitoring for best performance. The filters were tested and certified by Los Angeles County and independent labs to NSF standards 53 and 42.
In testing, we found that the Big Berkey removed the metallic smell and taste from our tap water, replacing it with a clean, mineral-like finish that felt smooth and refreshing. The stainless steel build gives it a polished, modern look that feels like a more elevated version of a standard water cooler. Because itâs gravity-fed, filtration takes about one hour per gallon. Water is dispensed by pressing the lever at the base, which releases a steady stream from the spigot. We found it most convenient to keep the system near the sink for easy refills.
Please note that Big Berkey does not warranty products purchased through Amazon. The
company states
: âWe routinely receive requests for assistance/support from Amazon purchases, and most times are unfortunately unable to provide service support. As a result, and due to the inability of Amazon to assist in policing and removing fraudulent/imitation Berkey products, we do not recommend purchasing through Amazon.â

Must hold button to pour
Reverse osmosis works by pushing water through a semipermeable membrane that captures some of the smallest contaminants, even those on a molecular level. This process removes substances like salt, dirt, and other particulates that most standard filters cannot touch, producing an exceptionally pure taste and clear water. The AquaTru Countertop Reverse Osmosis Filter uses a four-stage filtration system, including a reverse osmosis membrane, to transform tap water into clean, great-tasting drinking water. To use, simply fill the one-gallon tank, and the system converts it into about three quarts of filtered water.
During testing, we found that it completely transformed our cloudy, funky-tasting tap water into crystal-clear, odor-free water with no perceptible aftertaste. Setup required a few components, but the helpful instructional videos made the process easy to follow. To dispense water, press and hold the button, then release when your glass is full. We did notice slight dripping after releasing the button and found it mildly inconvenient to have to hold it down, but its sleek, modern design more than made up for that small drawback. It is also reasonably compact but does require an outlet for operation.
The AquaTru includes a digital display that shows when it is time to replace the filters. The reverse osmosis filter lasts around two years, while the pre/carbon filter lasts six months and the carbon VOC filter lasts up to one year. Replacements are sold as a three-piece set. This system has been tested and certified by the IAPMO to meet NSF standards 42, 53, 58, 401, and P473, and the filters remove 83 contaminants, including lead, arsenic, fluoride, chlorine, and nitrates.

Not fully NSF-certified
The Bluevua Reverse Osmosis Countertop Water Filter combines the simplicity of a water filter pitcher with the power of a multi-stage filtration system. Designed much like a drip coffee maker, it automatically fills its glass carafe with purified water once the filtration process finishes. The carafe is made of durable borosilicate glass, holds up to seven cups, and features easy-to-read measurement markings.
The setup for this water filter is simpler than most. Just plug it in, flush the system a few times before first use as the manufacturer recommends, and press the button to start filtering. In testing, we found that it was impressively fast, producing a full pitcher of clean water in less than five minutes. This system uses a four-stage filtration process that includes a reverse osmosis membrane.
We found that it produced clean, crisp-tasting water compared to the cloudy tap water poured into the unfiltered side. We also appreciated the optional mineral insert, which restores essential minerals and gives the water a refreshing mineral-water flavor.
The stage one, two, and four filters need replacing about once a year, while the stage three filter lasts up to two years. A digital display shows the water quality, pitcher level, and filter life, conveniently alerting you when itâs time to replace each one. SGS has certified these filters to NSF standards 42, 53, and 401, though the system itself is not fully NSF-certified according to the NSF database.

Loud while running
Best known for its classic water filter pitchers, Brita brings the same trusted simplicity to its countertop model. We found that setup was just as easy as it is with its pitchers, with clear instructions right on the machine itself. Simply plug it in, run a few water cycles, and itâs ready to go. In testing, we found that it produced clean, smooth, and refreshing water that tasted noticeably fresher than our tap water.
One standout feature of this model is its speed. It filtered water within seconds, going from the unfiltered tank to our glass almost instantly once we pressed the button. Because the stream dispenses quickly, we recommend using a taller glass to avoid splashing.
We also liked the sleek, space-saving design, which fits comfortably in smaller kitchens. The filter operates on the louder side while running, but itâs quiet when idle. It only filters room-temperature water, though we found that refrigerating the unfiltered tank before use provides a simple workaround as long as you remember to secure the opening at the bottom first.
The Brita Hub includes a digital display that lights up when itâs time to replace the filter, which typically lasts around six months. The system is tested and certified by the WQA to NSF standards 42 and 401 and by the IAPMO to NSF standard 53.

Complex setup and priming
The Boroux Legacy Compact Water Filter System blends timeless style with powerful gravity-fed filtration. Similar in concept to the Big Berkey, this system features upper and lower stainless steel chambers and comes in classic silver, matte black, or matte white finishes. During testing, we found the matte stainless look exceptionally sleek, as it fit seamlessly into our kitchen and looked more like decor than a countertop appliance.
The system operates with two Foundation filters, with the option to add fluoride filters for extra purification. Simply pour water into the upper chamber and let gravity do the work, slowly filtering it into the lower reservoir, which dispenses through a stainless steel spigot. We appreciated the water-level spigot, which made it easy to tell when to refill.
One downside we encountered with this system was the setup. Between reading instructions, watching online tutorials, and priming the filters, it took us nearly two hours to get it up and running. But in the end, we found that the results were worth it. The water tasted smooth and light, with a clean, refreshing finish. The system holds 1.8 gallons and performs best when kept near the sink for easy refills.
Filters should be replaced about every 12 months, depending on usage. The Boroux Legacy Compact is WQA-certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 for lead-free compliance and has been independently tested by third-party labs for additional performance claims.

Spigot placement limits positioning
The LifeStraw Home Studio Water Filter Dispenser proves that small can still be mighty. Compact enough for most countertops, this model offers clean, great-tasting water in a sleek, modern design available in colors like orchid pink, jade green, and soft neutrals too.
Setup is refreshingly simple: rinse the carbon filter, twist it into place, and run a few rinse cycles. The 10-cup dispenser filters a full batch of water in about 10 to 15 minutes, combining a membrane microfilter that lasts roughly one year (264 gallons) with an activated carbon and ion exchange filter that should be replaced every two months (40 gallons). Both filter types are sold separately and install easily with a twist. Overall, we were highly impressed by the fresh, crisp taste of the filtered water, especially given the unitâs minimalist design and easy setup.
In testing, we found that the spigot placement at the base made positioning a little tricky. It needs to hang slightly off the edge of the counter or sink to dispense water. However, at just over 10 inches tall and 6.7 inches wide, it can also fit inside a refrigerator if you prefer chilled, filtered water. We also found that filling the upper reservoir about three-quarters full, or roughly seven to eight cups, allowed for the smoothest flow and prevented water from lingering in the top chamber.Â
This dispenser is independently tested to meet NSF/ANSI standards 42 and 53 and is proven to remove bacteria, parasites, microplastics, chlorine, organic chemical matter, and heavy metals like lead, all while retaining healthy minerals.

for its quick setup and clean, odor-free taste. For fluoride removal, the
AlcaPure Countertop Reverse Osmosis Filter
is our top choice for its powerful and efficient filtration system.
How We Tested Countertop Water Filters
We spent more than 1,395 hours testing 11 of the most popular countertop water filters using tap water from New York, San Francisco, Seattle, and several cities in the Midwest and South. Each model was rated on taste, filtration speed, ease of use, design, and overall value to see how it performed in everyday use.
Please note that this test focused on aesthetic performance, including taste, smell, and usability, and did not evaluate contaminant removal such as lead, pharmaceuticals, or pesticides. All products included on this list are NSF-certified or certified by a third party to NSF standards. For details, see individual product certifications or verify listings directly with NSF.
Taste and Smell:
To start, we sampled unfiltered tap water and compared it to the filtered version from each unit. Our testers noted how effectively the systems removed metallic, sulfur, and chlorine flavors and whether the final result tasted clean, light, and refreshing enough to drink all day.
Ease of Use:
We tracked how long it took each filter to process a full batch, how often refills were needed, and how intuitive the installation and operation felt. Filters that were quick to set up, simple to refill, and easy to maintain scored highest for daily convenience.
Design & Value:
Our testers assessed each filterâs footprint, build quality, and refill experience, along with how well it fit under a faucet or on a countertop. They also compared overall performance and long-term filter costs to determine which models offered the best balance of design, function, and value.
What to Look for in a Countertop Water Filter System
Style
Countertop water filters generally come in two styles: faucet diverters and freestanding units.
Faucet diverters attach directly to your kitchen faucet using a small connector or hose. Once installed, you can easily switch between unfiltered and filtered water. Setup is usually simple and doesnât require tools.
Freestanding filters, on the other hand, donât need a faucet connection. You just fill the top reservoir with tap water and let gravityâor in some cases, an electric pumpâdo the rest. The filtered water collects in a lower chamber or carafe, ready to pour. These tend to take up more counter space, but theyâre perfect for renters or anyone who prefers a setup that doesnât rely on plumbing.
If you drink a lot of water or live in a larger household, consider choosing a higher-capacity filter so youâre not constantly refilling throughout the day.
Purpose
Before you buy, think about what you want your water filter to accomplish. If youâre mainly after better-tasting water, a simple single-stage carbon filter will likely do the job by removing chlorine and unpleasant odors.
If your area has more serious water quality issues, or you just want the highest level of purification, a system with multiple filtration stages is a better choice. Check your cityâs annual water quality report to see whatâs in your tap water.
âś
If youâre on well water, you can order a private test through a state-certified lab to identify potential contaminants.
More advanced countertop systems often use a combination of carbon absorption, ion exchange, and reverse osmosis. Together, these target everything from larger sediment particles to microscopic contaminants, giving you the cleanest water possible.
Filter Life
Every countertop water filter needs its filters replaced regularly to maintain performance. The lifespan depends on both the model and how much water you use, but most need replacement roughly every six months.
Some filters last longer, (especially reverse osmosis membranes) while others may need changing sooner if your water has more sediment or minerals. Replacement costs also vary, so itâs a good idea to check pricing before committing to a system. Staying consistent with filter changes keeps your water tasting fresh and helps your filter last longer overall.
Certification
Third-party certification is one of the best ways to know that a countertop water filter actually does what it claims. Look for official marks from NSF, ANSI, or the Water Quality Association (WQA). These organizations independently test filters to confirm that they meet safety and performance standards.
Be cautious of vague wording. A filter that says itâs âtested toâ or âmeetsâ NSF/ANSI standards isnât necessarily certified. Only filters that have undergone full verification can display the NSF seal.
âˇ
Double-checking this detail before buying ensures youâre getting a filter thatâs been properly evaluated and not just advertised as one.
FAQs
What is the best way to filter tap water?
The right filtration system depends on your home setup, water usage, and what youâre trying to remove.
A countertop water filter is a great middle ground as it filters enough water for daily drinking and cooking without requiring plumbing. If you have the counter space, a faucet diverter system offers extra convenience since it connects directly to your sink, saving you from constant refills. If you prefer flexibility, freestanding filters are easy to move around and donât need to attach to a faucet. Some even fit inside the fridge if you like your water chilled.
Before deciding, itâs ideal to look up your local water quality report (available through your city or countyâs utility department) or order a private test. Knowing whatâs in your tap water helps you choose a filter that tackles the right contaminants.
If a countertop option doesnât fit your space or routine, consider an under-sink system, pitcher filter, or even a whole-house filter for broader coverage.
Do countertop water filters remove fluoride?
Some countertop filters remove fluoride, but not all of them do. Fluoride reduction typically requires an extra filtration step, usually through a reverse osmosis membrane or activated alumina filter.
Always check product specs before buying, since fluoride removal isnât standard in most carbon-based systems. If reducing fluoride is your priority, reverse osmosis filters remain the most effective choice, though even these canât eliminate every trace.
Are there any water filters that can remove all contaminants?
âNot all filters remove all contaminants,â says
Rick Andrew
, formerly of NSF Internationalâs Global Water Program. In other words, every filter works a little differently, so itâs important to first understand whatâs actually in your water before deciding on a system. You can find this information in your local utilityâs annual water quality report, which is available to all residents. If you have well water or think your plumbing could be contributing to contamination, a private lab can test your water in more detail.
4
While no home filter removes every possible contaminant, different types are made to tackle specific ones. Activated carbon filters are best for improving taste and reducing chlorine. Ion exchange filters target heavy metals like lead. Reverse osmosis systems remove a wide range of dissolved solids and chemicals, and UV filters are designed to neutralize bacteria and viruses.
The key is to choose a filter that addresses your specific water concerns and confirm itâs NSF-certified, which ensures that the performance claims have been independently verified. You can view
NSF's online listings here
to see if a specific product is certified.
How often do you need to change countertop water filters?
Most countertop filters last around six months, but that can vary depending on the brand, system type, and how much water you use. Some filters need replacing every few months, while others, especially those with multi-stage or reverse osmosis systems, can last up to a year or even longer.
For the best results, follow the manufacturerâs replacement schedule and pay attention to built-in indicators if your system has them. Changing filters on time keeps your water tasting fresh and prevents buildup that could affect performance.
Do water filters work for well water?
Yes, many countertop water filters work just as well with well water as they do with city water. The key is to choose one designed for your specific water quality.
Private wells draw water directly from the ground and arenât federally regulated like municipal systems. This means homeowners are responsible for regular testing and maintenance. For guidance, you can reach out to your stateâs Department of Natural Resources or local health department.
Well water quality can be affected by natural conditions (like soil composition) or nearby human activity such as farming or construction.
5
To stay safe, have your well tested by a
state-certified lab
each year for common contaminants like bacteria, nitrates, pesticides, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and dissolved solids.
6
7
Filters that use UV light, sediment filtration, or reverse osmosis can all help improve well water safety. Watch for changes in taste, odor, or color as these can be early signs that itâs time to retest or replace your filter.
How do you know if a water filter is counterfeit?
Unfortunately, counterfeit filters are fairly common, especially online. According to Rick Andrew of NSF International, price is often the biggest red flag. If the cost seems too good to be true, it probably is. Other signs include packaging that looks overly glossy or cheaply made, certification marks that are tiny or hard to read, and filters that feel unusually light, which can mean they lack the proper filtration materials. When in doubt, buy replacements directly from the manufacturer or an authorized retailer to ensure youâre getting a genuine product.
What do you need to know about reverse osmosis filters?
âReverse osmosis filters remove a large number of contaminants but are generally more expensive,â explains
Sydney Evans
, Science Analyst at the Environmental Working Group.
Most reverse osmosis (RO) systems use a semi-permeable membrane combined with an activated carbon filter, which helps catch extra impurities and protect the delicate RO membrane. While this process produces exceptionally clean water, Evans says that these systems also tend to waste three to five times more water than they filter.
Even so, reverse osmosis filters remain one of the best options for anyone wanting maximum purification, especially for reducing heavy metals, dissolved solids, and chemical pollutants.

If tap water isnât cutting it, there are far better options than stocking up on bottled water. Countertop water filtration systems are a convenient way to get clean, fresh, and great-tasting water right at home while helping you to cut down on plastic waste. These units either connect directly to your faucet or can be filled manually, reducing the presence of chlorine, heavy metals, and particulates in tap water.
We spent nearly 1,400 hours testing popular countertop water filters to find the ones that truly deliver. Many of the models on our list are certified to reduce contaminants and all of them meet NSF standards, ensuring that each filter performs exactly as advertised.

What We Like
- Compact and sleek design
- Easy setup
- Fast, clean-tasting results
- Tank-free, direct faucet connection
What We Donât Like
- Not compatible with all faucets
The Brondell Countertop Water Filtration System is one of those rare finds that blends power with convenience. We found that this countertop water filter delivers crisp, odor-free water while taking up surprisingly little space on the counter. The Brondell Cypress has been independently tested and certified by the [Water Quality Association (WQA)](https://wqa.org/grow/product-certification/) to meet NSF/ANSI standards 42, 53, and 372, and it uses a patented three-stage Nanotrap filtration system with carbon block technology to capture a wide range of impurities, including bacteria, viruses, [VOCs](https://www.epa.gov/indoor-air-quality-iaq/what-are-volatile-organic-compounds-vocs), and other harmful chemicals.

What We Like
- Removes fluoride and other common contaminants
- Smooth, refreshing water
- Reverse osmosis system
What We Donât Like
- Larger countertop footprint
- Filters water slowly
For those focused on fluoride removal, the AlcaPure Countertop Reverse Osmosis Filter proved to be one of the strongest performers we tested. With growing concern that excessive fluoride may cause issues such as tooth discoloration and bone weakness, this model is designed to help address that by removing up to 95 percent of fluoride and as much as 99 percent of other contaminants.12
It takes roughly 15 minutes to produce a half-gallon of clean water, so youâll likely find yourself refilling the unfiltered water drawer throughout the day.
The deviceâs reverse osmosis membrane and filters have been certified by the [International Association of Plumbing & Mechanical Officials](https://www.iapmo.org/) (IAPMO) to NSF standards 42 and 58, but the unit itself is not fully NSF-certified according to the NSF database. The membrane should be replaced every two years, while the other three filters last about a year.3 A built-in LED display conveniently signals when itâs time for replacements, taking the guesswork out of maintenance.
While the AlcaPure sits on the higher end of the price range and is a bit larger than some of the competition (9.5 x 14.5 x 16.25 inches), its impressive performance, polished design, and highly effective fluoride reduction make it well worth the investment.
**Filtration Type:** Reverse osmosis \| **Contaminants Filtered:** Chlorine, industrial chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, turbidity, VOCs, microorganisms \| **Retains Minerals:** No \| **Certified By:** IAPMO \| **Dimensions:** 9\.5 x 14.5 x 16.25 inches

What We Like
- Fast filtration time
- Quiet-powered filtration
- Keeps essential minerals
What We Donât Like
- Needs an outlet nearby

What We Like
- Two-gallon capacity
- Long-lasting filters
- Sleek, durable stainless steel design
- No power or plumbing required
What We Donât Like
- Large size needs dedicated counter space
The [company states](https://berkeyfilterwater.com/contact/https-berkeyfilterwater-com-contact-shipping-returns/): âWe routinely receive requests for assistance/support from Amazon purchases, and most times are unfortunately unable to provide service support. As a result, and due to the inability of Amazon to assist in policing and removing fraudulent/imitation Berkey products, we do not recommend purchasing through Amazon.â

What We Like
- Removes over 80 contaminants
- Produces exceptionally pure water
- Easy-to-read digital display
What We Donât Like
- Must hold button to pour

What We Like
- Elegant glass carafe design
- Fast filtration time
- Adds back essential minerals
What We Donât Like
- Not fully NSF-certified

What We Like
- Fast filtration time
- Compact and modern aesthetic
- Easy to use
What We Donât Like
- Loud while running

What We Like
- Sleek stainless steel design
- Noticeably light and clean-tasting water
- Multiple matte color options
What We Donât Like
- Complex setup and priming

What We Like
- Fits easily on small countertops
- Stylish color options
- Refreshing, clean taste
What We Donât Like
- Spigot placement limits positioning
We also found that filling the upper reservoir about three-quarters full, or roughly seven to eight cups, allowed for the smoothest flow and prevented water from lingering in the top chamber.
This dispenser is independently tested to meet NSF/ANSI standards 42 and 53 and is proven to remove bacteria, parasites, microplastics, chlorine, organic chemical matter, and heavy metals like lead, all while retaining healthy minerals.
**Filtration Type:** Membrane microfilter + activated carbon + ion exchange\| **Contaminants Filtered:** Bacteria, parasites, microplastics, chlorine, organic chemical matter, and heavy metals including lead \| **Retains Minerals:** Yes \| **Certified By:** Independently tested to meet NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 401, P473 (PFAS) \| **Dimensions:** 10.4 x 6.7 x 8.5 inches
## Final Verdict
Overall, we were most impressed by the [Brondell Cypress Three-Stage Countertop Water Filtration System](https://www.amazon.com/Brondell-Cypress-Countertop-Filter-Certified/dp/B00EEDJSES/?tag=thespruceeats-onsite-prod-20&ascsubtag=4178851) for its quick setup and clean, odor-free taste. For fluoride removal, the [AlcaPure Countertop Reverse Osmosis Filter](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0076CQXAQ?tag=thespruceeats-onsite-prod-20&ascsubtag=4178851) is our top choice for its powerful and efficient filtration system.
## How We Tested Countertop Water Filters
- **Taste and Smell:** To start, we sampled unfiltered tap water and compared it to the filtered version from each unit. Our testers noted how effectively the systems removed metallic, sulfur, and chlorine flavors and whether the final result tasted clean, light, and refreshing enough to drink all day.
- **Ease of Use:** We tracked how long it took each filter to process a full batch, how often refills were needed, and how intuitive the installation and operation felt. Filters that were quick to set up, simple to refill, and easy to maintain scored highest for daily convenience.
- **Design & Value:** Our testers assessed each filterâs footprint, build quality, and refill experience, along with how well it fit under a faucet or on a countertop. They also compared overall performance and long-term filter costs to determine which models offered the best balance of design, function, and value.
## What to Look for in a Countertop Water Filter System
### Style
### Purpose
Before you buy, think about what you want your water filter to accomplish. If youâre mainly after better-tasting water, a simple single-stage carbon filter will likely do the job by removing chlorine and unpleasant odors.
If your area has more serious water quality issues, or you just want the highest level of purification, a system with multiple filtration stages is a better choice. Check your cityâs annual water quality report to see whatâs in your tap water.[âś](https://www.epa.gov/DWdata) If youâre on well water, you can order a private test through a state-certified lab to identify potential contaminants.
More advanced countertop systems often use a combination of carbon absorption, ion exchange, and reverse osmosis. Together, these target everything from larger sediment particles to microscopic contaminants, giving you the cleanest water possible.
### Filter Life
Every countertop water filter needs its filters replaced regularly to maintain performance.
### Certification
Third-party certification is one of the best ways to know that a countertop water filter actually does what it claims. Look for official marks from NSF, ANSI, or the Water Quality Association (WQA). These organizations independently test filters to confirm that they meet safety and performance standards.
Be cautious of vague wording. A filter that says itâs âtested toâ or âmeetsâ NSF/ANSI standards isnât necessarily certified. Only filters that have undergone full verification can display the NSF seal.[âˇ](https://www.nsf.org/about-nsf/nsf-mark) Double-checking this detail before buying ensures youâre getting a filter thatâs been properly evaluated and not just advertised as one.
## FAQs
### What is the best way to filter tap water?
### Do countertop water filters remove fluoride?
Some countertop filters remove fluoride, but not all of them do. Fluoride reduction typically requires an extra filtration step, usually through a reverse osmosis membrane or activated alumina filter.
Always check product specs before buying, since fluoride removal isnât standard in most carbon-based systems. If reducing fluoride is your priority, reverse osmosis filters remain the most effective choice, though even these canât eliminate every trace.
### Are there any water filters that can remove all contaminants?
âNot all filters remove all contaminants,â says [Rick Andrew](https://wcponline.com/category/writer/rick-andrew/), formerly of NSF Internationalâs Global Water Program. In other words, every filter works a little differently, so itâs important to first understand whatâs actually in your water before deciding on a system. You can find this information in your local utilityâs annual water quality report, which is available to all residents. If you have well water or think your plumbing could be contributing to contamination, a private lab can test your water in more detail.4
You can view [NSF's online listings here](https://info.nsf.org/Certified/DWTU/) to see if a specific product is certified.
### How often do you need to change countertop water filters?
Most countertop filters last around six months, but that can vary depending on the brand, system type, and how much water you use. Some filters need replacing every few months, while others, especially those with multi-stage or reverse osmosis systems, can last up to a year or even longer.
For the best results, follow the manufacturerâs replacement schedule and pay attention to built-in indicators if your system has them. Changing filters on time keeps your water tasting fresh and prevents buildup that could affect performance.
### Do water filters work for well water?
Yes, many countertop water filters work just as well with well water as they do with city water. The key is to choose one designed for your specific water quality.
Private wells draw water directly from the ground and arenât federally regulated like municipal systems. This means homeowners are responsible for regular testing and maintenance. For guidance, you can reach out to your stateâs Department of Natural Resources or local health department.
Well water quality can be affected by natural conditions (like soil composition) or nearby human activity such as farming or construction.5 To stay safe, have your well tested by a [state-certified lab](https://www.epa.gov/dwlabcert/contact-information-certification-programs-and-certified-laboratories-drinking-water) each year for common contaminants like bacteria, nitrates, pesticides, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and dissolved solids.67
Filters that use UV light, sediment filtration, or reverse osmosis can all help improve well water safety. Watch for changes in taste, odor, or color as these can be early signs that itâs time to retest or replace your filter.
### How do you know if a water filter is counterfeit?
Unfortunately, counterfeit filters are fairly common, especially online. According to Rick Andrew of NSF International, price is often the biggest red flag. If the cost seems too good to be true, it probably is. Other signs include packaging that looks overly glossy or cheaply made, certification marks that are tiny or hard to read, and filters that feel unusually light, which can mean they lack the proper filtration materials. When in doubt, buy replacements directly from the manufacturer or an authorized retailer to ensure youâre getting a genuine product.
### What do you need to know about reverse osmosis filters?
âReverse osmosis filters remove a large number of contaminants but are generally more expensive,â explains [Sydney Evans](https://www.ewg.org/), Science Analyst at the Environmental Working Group.

**Filtration Type:** Carbon filtration, ion exchange, and sub-micron mechanical filtration \| **Contaminants Filtered:** Removes 78 contaminants, including chlorine, chloramine, lead, VOCs, asbestos, turbidity, mercury, cysts, PFOA/PFOS, herbicides, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and microplastics \| **Retains Minerals:** Yes \| **Certified By:** WQA \| **Dimensions:** 9\.7 x 8 x 11.6 inches

What We Like
- Two-gallon capacity
- Long-lasting filters
- Sleek, durable stainless steel design
- No power or plumbing required
What We Donât Like
- Large size needs dedicated counter space

What We Like
- Elegant glass carafe design
- Fast filtration time
- Adds back essential minerals
What We Donât Like
- Not fully NSF-certified

What We Like
- Fast filtration time
- Compact and modern aesthetic
- Easy to use
What We Donât Like
- Loud while running

What We Like
- Sleek stainless steel design
- Noticeably light and clean-tasting water
- Multiple matte color options
What We Donât Like
- Complex setup and priming
**Filtration Type:** Gravity-fed dual Foundation filters (optional fluoride add-ons) \| **Contaminants Filtered:** Third-party tested for 70+ contaminants, including chlorine, chloramine, lead, mercury, and PFAS (PFOA/PFOS) \| **Retains Minerals:** Yes \| **Certified By:** WQA to NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 (lead-free); additional performance independently tested \| **Dimensions:** 17.5 x 8 x 8 inches
What We Like
- Fits easily on small countertops
- Stylish color options
- Refreshing, clean taste
What We Donât Like
- Spigot placement limits positioning

### Style
