Baking soda is a
natural cleaning and deodorizing solution
for many things around the house, including your fridge. It’s inexpensive and acts as a gentle abrasive that can help lift even tougher stains. Best of all, it acts as a natural deodorizer.Â
Below, we share how to clean your fridge with baking powder, removing the need to call for a professional cleaner.
What You’ll Need
Baking soda
Distilled white vinegar
Sponge
Microfiber cloths
How to Clean A Fridge With Baking Soda
Create a thick paste
First, you’ll want to create your cleaning paste, which usually consists of three parts baking soda to one part warm water. In a small bowl, mix three tablespoons of baking soda with one tablespoon of water. The water can also be replaced with a tablespoon of dishwashing liquid that contains a degreaser (Dawn). Double this recipe if you have a large fridge.
The key is to ensure that your baking soda paste is spreadable. If you’re looking to tackle particular stubborn stains, consider adding lemon or lime juice, or distilled white vinegar to your baking soda.Â
Remove all Items
Make sure to remove all items from your fridge, including food, shelving, and bins. This will help you clean all the nooks and crannies of your fridge without a barrier, and will allow you to deep-clean shelves and bins separately.
Apply and Scrub
Using a sponge, dip it into your baking soda paste and apply it directly to any stains or sticky areas. Don’t be shy to add a little elbow grease. For particularly stubborn spots, you can enlist a toothbrush to help. Its fine bristles can help break down grime.
Let it Sit
Allow the paste to sit on the grime for 10 to 15 minutes to really maximize its cleaning power. While you wait, create a new baking soda paste to scrub at your fridge’s bins and shelves.
Wipe Clean
Create a rinsing solution by combining 50% water and 50% distilled vinegar in a bowl. Dip a clean sponge in it and use it to wipe down your fridge, ensuring that all paste and grime has been swiped away. Gently dry your fridge with a clean, dry microfiber cloth, and place your food items back inside.
How Often to Clean Your Fridge
There’s no real timeline for how often you should clean your fridge, as it’ll depend on your fridge’s contents. You’ll know it's time for a deep clean when you notice a lingering smell and a buildup of grime.
However, you can do some light maintenance work every week or so to ensure that deep cleans aren't a regular occurrence. By preventing the buildup of small stains and spills, you can ensure that your fridge not only looks clean but also smells clean week after week.
Every week, you should take a microfiber cloth, dampened with water, and wipe down your fridge. Pay close attention to removing any crumbs and spills from shelves and bins. You can pair your cloth with an all-purpose cleaner to make the job easier.
Additional Tips to Keep a Fridge Clean Longer
Create an organization strategy that will minimize jostling when searching for an item. This will prevent spills, stains, and splatters.
Line your fridge’s bins and shelves with items like tea towels, non-sticky shelf liners, or fridge mats to prevent stains from building up.
Wipe up any spills and crumbs as soon as you see them. |

Baking soda is a [natural cleaning and deodorizing solution](https://www.thespruce.com/diy-toilet-bowl-cleaner-4846971) for many things around the house, including your fridge. It’s inexpensive and acts as a gentle abrasive that can help lift even tougher stains. Best of all, it acts as a natural deodorizer.
Below, we share how to clean your fridge with baking powder, removing the need to call for a professional cleaner.
## What You’ll Need
- Baking soda
- Distilled white vinegar
- Sponge
- Microfiber cloths
## How to Clean A Fridge With Baking Soda
### Create a thick paste
First, you’ll want to create your cleaning paste, which usually consists of three parts baking soda to one part warm water. In a small bowl, mix three tablespoons of baking soda with one tablespoon of water. The water can also be replaced with a tablespoon of dishwashing liquid that contains a degreaser (Dawn). Double this recipe if you have a large fridge.
The key is to ensure that your baking soda paste is spreadable. If you’re looking to tackle particular stubborn stains, consider adding lemon or lime juice, or distilled white vinegar to your baking soda.
### Remove all Items
Make sure to remove all items from your fridge, including food, shelving, and bins. This will help you clean all the nooks and crannies of your fridge without a barrier, and will allow you to deep-clean shelves and bins separately.
### Apply and Scrub
Using a sponge, dip it into your baking soda paste and apply it directly to any stains or sticky areas. Don’t be shy to add a little elbow grease. For particularly stubborn spots, you can enlist a toothbrush to help. Its fine bristles can help break down grime.
### Let it Sit
Allow the paste to sit on the grime for 10 to 15 minutes to really maximize its cleaning power. While you wait, create a new baking soda paste to scrub at your fridge’s bins and shelves.
### Wipe Clean
Create a rinsing solution by combining 50% water and 50% distilled vinegar in a bowl. Dip a clean sponge in it and use it to wipe down your fridge, ensuring that all paste and grime has been swiped away. Gently dry your fridge with a clean, dry microfiber cloth, and place your food items back inside.
## How Often to Clean Your Fridge
## Additional Tips to Keep a Fridge Clean Longer
1. Create an organization strategy that will minimize jostling when searching for an item. This will prevent spills, stains, and splatters.
2. Line your fridge’s bins and shelves with items like tea towels, non-sticky shelf liners, or fridge mats to prevent stains from building up.
3. Wipe up any spills and crumbs as soon as you see them. |
