| Meta Title | The Best Folding Chairs We've Found Online for You |
| Meta Description | Folding chairs can easily be stored away when they're not in use. We researched the best folding chairs for any situation. |

| Boilerpipe Text | Remember those wildly uncomfortable folding chairs you used to sit on in school auditoriums and gymnasiums, the kind where the hard aluminum would stick to your skin and make your body ache after about three minutes? Those uninspired chair designs are a thing of the past. It’s now possible to find surprisingly chic folding chairs online—ones that are actually comfortable to use (we know, because we did the research for you).Â
You don’t have to trade function for form, as many folding chairs are just as aesthetically pleasing as they are convenient for portability. Whether you’re looking to save space or want an everyday chair for your
dining table
, there are plenty of designs to suit a variety of needs and budgets.Â
We’ve rounded up the best folding chairs, including
weather-resistant rockers
and
mid-century modern-inspired designs
, cushiony contemporary models and options for minimalist aesthetics. So, grab a seat and take your pick.
What We Like
Flexible seat and back
Durable steel frame

Impact-resistant construction
What We Don't Like
Feet can scratch floors
If you’re looking for a simple, lightweight folding chair that’s comfortable and durable, this bestselling HDX model will do the trick. It’s our overall best pick for good reason: It’s made with a cold-rolled steel frame that can hold up 600 pounds and a flexible polymer backrest that offers added comfort.
We love that this folding chair actually flexes as you lean back, shift, or adjust in its seat. It may not mold to your body like a cushioned chair, but it does offer more comfort than your average metal or plastic one.Â
While it’s not the fanciest model out there, we do also love its more generous sizing. The seat is wider than all the others on the list, making it better able to accommodate users of all shapes and sizes.Â
Since it weighs only 10 pounds, it’s super easy to carry and works well outdoors, especially since it’s not made with fabric. The powder-coated steel is also rust-resistant, so if you accidentally leave it out in the rain, you won’t have to worry
too
much. It does come with a 10-year warranty, for extra peace of mind.Â
We do think, however, that you probably want to add padding to the chair feet so as to not scratch up sensitive floors. They can be a bit sharp and don’t feature any protective covering, so you’ll want to be cautious about scraping or sliding them on hardwood.

If you’re looking for a straightforward folding chair that’s surprisingly attractive, Ikea’s Vihals Folding Chair takes the win. It’s functional and a fantastic value at just $20 bucks per chair, with a brushed matte design in three color choices (light green, red, and white) that looks way more expensive than it actually is.Â
Plus, it folds up flat, making it a great option for smaller spaces. We like that this folding chair comes pre-assembled so you don’t have to break out your drill to set it up. It’s also easy to carry around as the lightest folding chair on our list (it weighs just 7 pounds).Â
This versatile pick is great for dorm rooms or when you simply need extra seating for guests, but it’s also pretty enough to set out year-round. We especially like its powder-coated steel frame, which means it’s not as prone to rust and can be used outdoors.Â
One drawback, however, is that although it’s fairly durable, it’s not recommended for folks who weigh over 240 pounds, making it a little less inclusive than other folding chairs on our list.Â

Lower weight capacity
Ikea is where we love to head for versatile, affordable furniture, and we particularly like the range of folding chairs here (after all, our
best value option
above is from Ikea, too!). If you’re looking for a chair that’s compact, stylish, and more comfortable than your average plastic or metal model, the Frosvi fits the bill.Â
Constructed with a solid wood frame—a departure from plastic or particleboard alternatives—this folding chair offers padding in two key places. The seat back is padded with foam, and so too is the seat itself. This adds cushioning and comfort whether you’re sitting for a few hours or longer.
We also like how easily this chair folds flat and its lightweight nature. It’s light enough to hang on a wall for quick, out-of-the-way storage, and you’ll have no trouble pulling it out when guests stop by.
Our only complaint about this cushioned Ikea folding chair? It can wobble for some users, such as taller individuals who may find it a little small for their liking. Its weight capacity is also on the lower end of the typical range for folding chairs, but its design overall should support a variety of users.

What We Don't Like
Seat may feel shallow
High-end design isn’t normally the first thing that comes to mind when we think about folding chairs, but this one from Corrigan Studio is simply beautiful. With its padded backing and seat cushion made of supportive yet soft high-density foam, it’s a bit more comfortable than your run-of-the-mill folding chair.
While the modern wood frame on this chair is eye-catching, we also love the
minimalist colors
against the light-hued wood, which is made with a combination of manufactured and solid wood. This modern chair set (you get two for less than $200) will look great at a breakfast table, writing desk, or anywhere you need extra seating.Â
And if you don’t want to keep these chairs out and in use all the time, they’re foldable and stackable for easy storage. We also appreciate their sturdy construction; each can hold over 300 pounds. However, it’s worth noting that for taller folks, the seat cushions may seem a bit shallow.Â

We love a bold pop of color, and these sheer acrylic folding chairs are a far cry from the bland basic ones of yesteryear. Not only are they super stylish and available in four fun colors, but they’re also durable with a high load-bearing capacity (up to 350 pounds).Â
Constructed with a stainless steel frame, they’re lightweight at just over 10 pounds each and fold up completely flat in seconds, making them perfectly portable. The slight curvature in the backrest portion offers more comfort than a standardized chair, and the acrylic seat offers more comfort than traditional aluminium.Â
Given the on-trend design of these folding chairs, you probably won’t want to keep them hidden away in a closet. We think they’re a fun choice whether you’re
hosting a dinner party
for friends or want a chic seat for your garden. And, since they’re made with acrylic seats and backs, they’re very easy to clean; just wipe each down with a damp cloth.Â

What We Don't Like
Lower weight capacity
When it comes to lounging outdoors, this
zero-gravity folding chair
is one of the best options. We’ve actually put this product to the test ourselves, and we found it impressively comfortable and durable.
Not only does it come in a ton of colors (we’re partial to the sunflower yellow shade), but this folding chair also comes with an overhead canopy to provide serious shade and help protect you from UV rays. We love that the canopy isn’t a one-size-fits all and has a unique up/down/tilt functionality that you can adjust according to the direction of the sun.Â
It also has a cozy headrest with a removable pillow, so if you want to sit back and take a nap, well, go for it. And we can’t overlook the seat itself, which reclines up to 160 degrees and features a lockable system to keep your position secure.Â
We’re also big fans of the durable UV- and weather-resistant textilene mesh and steel frame on this folding chair. It’s so comfortable that we’ve used it to work from home (taking full advantage of its included tray for drinks, snacks, and even our laptop) and, after leaving it outdoors for three months, it’s held up to the elements impressively well.
While we love the design and comfort of this outdoor folding chair, keep in mind it’s only tested for up to 250 pounds. That lower weight capacity may limit its versatility for different users.

What We Like

What We Don't Like
Visible hardware
If you’re searching for folding chairs that look like true pieces of furniture for use indoors at your dining table, during parties, or around the house, we love Soohow’s Wood Folding Chairs. While not as thickly padded as some of the other wood options on our list, we do love the design of these chairs and would gladly use them at our own dining table.
Featuring attractive polyurethane webbing and clean lines, this folding chair comes in a set of two and four color choices. The frames and seats are surprisingly well-constructed and nicely durable for the price, and they’re comfortable for adults to sit on, too. In fact, you’ll be comfortably supported for minutes or hours on these chairs.
We also like the higher weight capacity of this option. Able to support up to 330 pounds, it comes close to our
best design option
(which can support 20 more pounds), though it does fall short compared to our
overall best
.
The one downside to these surprisingly comfy and attractive folding chairs is the hardware is more visible than we prefer. You can see the hardware that connects the polyurethane straps to the chair’s wood frame, and the underside of those straps is a different color (which you can also see from some angles). It’s not a dealbreaker for us, but it does mean these chairs aren’t as sleekly designed as, say, our
best wood option
.

What We Like

What We Don't Like
Canopy isn’t adjustable
This folding chair may not recline like our
best outdoor option
, but we like that it has a much longer canopy for better sun protection. This is a great companion for camping, outdoor concerts,
lounging at the beach
, RV road tripping, and sports games, especially since it has two cup holders (and don’t we all need at least two drinks at a time?), one on each armrest.Â
We like how easily this chair folds up. At 12 pounds, it’s also among the most portable options on our list, and you can wear it like a backpack when you’re transporting it.Â
Since it’s designed for outdoor use first and foremost, we appreciate the durable and weather-resistant Oxford cloth material. You don’t have to worry about fading from the sun or any icky mildew build-up over time. Cleaning is also a breeze as you really only need a damp cloth.Â
While the canopy isn’t tiltable, we don’t think that’s a dealbreaker. Since it’s so large overall, you shouldn’t have a problem keeping the sun rays at bay.Â

What We Like
Smooth rocking with shock absorbers
Breathable mesh back

What We Don't Like
Chair is a bit short
Good for tailgating, picnics, and just about any outdoor adventure (even those in your own backyard!), this folding rocking chair has a patented spring-action technology to help absorb shock and make you feel like you’re floating.Â
We appreciate the powder-coated steel frame, which means it’s more rust-resistant compared to unfinished steel. The folding chair also features a mesh backing so it’ll help keep you cool during humid summer days.
Another perk: It comes in nine different colors, ranging from cinnamon to gray and indigo blue, but you won’t find any neon or summery shades. It’s easy to open and close, and folds up flat, although the spring mechanism does stick out a bit while carrying. It’s sturdy and holds up for 250 pounds, so you can rock away day or night in comfort.Â
While this is sure to be your go-to outdoor folding chair, one drawback is it may be considered a little short and low to the ground for some (however that’s a plus for petite customers).Â

Final Verdict
With a durable steel frame and a flexible seat and back, the
HDX Plastic Seat Folding Chair
is our overall best pick for a chair that folds up compactly and offers solid comfort in various settings. If you’re looking for something more stylish that’ll fit in at your dining table, we also like the
Ikea Frosvi Folding Chair
, our most comfortable option that offers extra padding.
How We Picked the Folding Chairs
We looked at several factors to select the best folding chairs, but we started our search with overall style and comfort. Not only are these designs on-trend, but we also found many folding chairs have additional features, such as large canopies, rocking abilities, and foam padding that go beyond basic metal.
We also wanted to make sure to cover each type and different use case for folding chairs, whether it’s primarily for outdoor use and camping or simply an everyday option for guests or events.
What to Look for in a Folding Chair
Choose a Comfortable Seat
The first priority of any chair, folding or not, should be comfort. While folding chairs do have a reputation for being not-so-comfy for long periods, we've learned in our research that comfortable (and padded) options
do
exist.
In fact, many of today's best folding chairs are elevated versions that offer design details meant to enhance your comfort.
Padded cushioning is now common on many folding chairs, like the
Corrigan Studio Upholstered Padded Stackable Chair
(our favorite wood option) and the
Ikea FRĂ–SVI Folding Chair
(our most comfortable choice), others simply use canvas or polyester fabric and metal. We find that webbing can make for a comfortable seat that molds to your body (we like the
Soohow Wood Folding Chairs
, our best indoor pick, for this).
We also recommend looking closely at a folding chair's seat dimensions before purchasing to make sure it will work with your body type. A wider seat can offer more room to sit cross-legged or be a better fit for some bodies. A chair that's lower to the ground may be ideal for shorter users, while a taller seat may be better for tall users.
Opt for Durable Materials
As you start shopping for the best folding chairs, think about how—and where—you'll primarily use them.
Will the chairs be used for your
patio or outdoor space
? For camping trips or the beach? A companion to a writing desk? Questions like these will help you decide which materials make the best folding chair for your unique situation, as well as what additional features may be beneficial, like canopies and reclining seat backs.Â
If you’re primarily using your folding chair for the outdoors, it’s important to look for rust-resistant steel frames with weather-resistant fabric like this
Best Choice Products Folding Zero Gravity Recliner Patio Lounge
(our best for outdoor use option). However, if you do leave your folding chair out in the rain, be sure to let it completely air-dry before folding it back up.
For indoor use, you can really choose any fabric that matches your existing home décor or opt for a chic, translucent acrylic material like this
Alcorn Stackable Acrylic Folding Chair Set
(our best design pick).
Research Size and Weight Capacity
Most folding chairs aren’t really designed for super tall or larger bodies, as most have a load-bearing capacity of up to 250 to 300 pounds and tend to be lower to the ground than standard chairs.Â
Some, however, like this
HDX Plastic Seat Folding Chai
r, have a higher load-capacity at up to 600 pounds. Pay close attention to the seat depth and chair height when shopping around, as even the most comfortable chair will feel awkward if it’s simply too short or low to the ground for your body type.
One More Thing
It shouldn’t take more than a few seconds to open and collapse a newer folding chair. Look for a chair with an easy open/close mechanism, but note that each one functions a bit differently.
The
GCI Outdoor Freestyle Rocker Camping Chair
, for instance, comes with a side strap on the seat that folds the entire frame in one movement. Be sure to keep your chair rust-free so as to not encumber the movement over time.

What We Like
- Flexible seat and back
- Durable steel frame
- Generous size
- Impact-resistant construction
What We Don't Like
- Feet can scratch floors
If you’re looking for a simple, lightweight folding chair that’s comfortable and durable, this bestselling HDX model will do the trick. It’s our overall best pick for good reason: It’s made with a cold-rolled steel frame that can hold up 600 pounds and a flexible polymer backrest that offers added comfort.
We love that this folding chair actually flexes as you lean back, shift, or adjust in its seat. It may not mold to your body like a cushioned chair, but it does offer more comfort than your average metal or plastic one.
While it’s not the fanciest model out there, we do also love its more generous sizing. The seat is wider than all the others on the list, making it better able to accommodate users of all shapes and sizes.
Since it weighs only 10 pounds, it’s super easy to carry and works well outdoors, especially since it’s not made with fabric. The powder-coated steel is also rust-resistant, so if you accidentally leave it out in the rain, you won’t have to worry *too* much. It does come with a 10-year warranty, for extra peace of mind.
We do think, however, that you probably want to add padding to the chair feet so as to not scratch up sensitive floors. They can be a bit sharp and don’t feature any protective covering, so you’ll want to be cautious about scraping or sliding them on hardwood.
**Dimensions:** 20 x 18 x 43 inches \| **Material:** Plastic, steel \| **Weight:** 10 pounds \| **Weight Capacity:** 600 pounds

What We Like
- Durable powder-coated steel
- Folds flat
- Suits small spaces
What We Don't Like
- Limited color choices
- Not cushioned
If you’re looking for a straightforward folding chair that’s surprisingly attractive, Ikea’s Vihals Folding Chair takes the win. It’s functional and a fantastic value at just \$20 bucks per chair, with a brushed matte design in three color choices (light green, red, and white) that looks way more expensive than it actually is.
Plus, it folds up flat, making it a great option for smaller spaces. We like that this folding chair comes pre-assembled so you don’t have to break out your drill to set it up. It’s also easy to carry around as the lightest folding chair on our list (it weighs just 7 pounds).
This versatile pick is great for dorm rooms or when you simply need extra seating for guests, but it’s also pretty enough to set out year-round. We especially like its powder-coated steel frame, which means it’s not as prone to rust and can be used outdoors.
One drawback, however, is that although it’s fairly durable, it’s not recommended for folks who weigh over 240 pounds, making it a little less inclusive than other folding chairs on our list.
**Dimensions:** 18\.5 x 31.5 x 16.87 inches \| **Material:** Powder-coated steel, polypropylene \| **Weight:** 7 pounds \| **Weight Capacity:** 242 pounds

What We Like
- Solid beech wood frame
- Padded, fabric seat and back
- Lightweight and compact
What We Don't Like
- May wobble under heavier weight
- Lower weight capacity
Ikea is where we love to head for versatile, affordable furniture, and we particularly like the range of folding chairs here (after all, our [best value option](https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/vihals-folding-chair-green-00592752/) above is from Ikea, too!). If you’re looking for a chair that’s compact, stylish, and more comfortable than your average plastic or metal model, the Frosvi fits the bill.
**Dimensions:** 16.87 x 19.25 x 30.75 inches \| **Material:** Beech wood, polyurethane foam, polyester \| **Weight:** 8 pounds \| **Weight Capacity:** 243 pounds

What We Like
- Versatile modern styling
- High-density foam cushions
- Foldable and stackable
- Indoors or outdoor use
What We Don't Like
- Seat may feel shallow
High-end design isn’t normally the first thing that comes to mind when we think about folding chairs, but this one from Corrigan Studio is simply beautiful. With its padded backing and seat cushion made of supportive yet soft high-density foam, it’s a bit more comfortable than your run-of-the-mill folding chair.
While the modern wood frame on this chair is eye-catching, we also love the [minimalist colors](https://www.thespruce.com/what-is-minimalist-design-4796583) against the light-hued wood, which is made with a combination of manufactured and solid wood. This modern chair set (you get two for less than \$200) will look great at a breakfast table, writing desk, or anywhere you need extra seating.
And if you don’t want to keep these chairs out and in use all the time, they’re foldable and stackable for easy storage. We also appreciate their sturdy construction; each can hold over 300 pounds. However, it’s worth noting that for taller folks, the seat cushions may seem a bit shallow.

What We Like
- Trendy, translucent design
- Lightweight, stable frame
- Folds flat for storage
What We Don't Like
- Not cushioned
We love a bold pop of color, and these sheer acrylic folding chairs are a far cry from the bland basic ones of yesteryear. Not only are they super stylish and available in four fun colors, but they’re also durable with a high load-bearing capacity (up to 350 pounds).
Constructed with a stainless steel frame, they’re lightweight at just over 10 pounds each and fold up completely flat in seconds, making them perfectly portable. The slight curvature in the backrest portion offers more comfort than a standardized chair, and the acrylic seat offers more comfort than traditional aluminium.
Given the on-trend design of these folding chairs, you probably won’t want to keep them hidden away in a closet. We think they’re a fun choice whether you’re [hosting a dinner party](https://www.thespruce.com/your-guide-to-stress-free-summer-entertaining-5272417) for friends or want a chic seat for your garden. And, since they’re made with acrylic seats and backs, they’re very easy to clean; just wipe each down with a damp cloth.

What We Like
- Ergonomic seat
- UV-resistant mesh fabric

What We Don't Like
- Lower weight capacity
When it comes to lounging outdoors, this [zero-gravity folding chair](https://www.thespruce.com/best-zero-gravity-chairs-4173637) is one of the best options.
We love that the canopy isn’t a one-size-fits all and has a unique up/down/tilt functionality that you can adjust according to the direction of the sun.
It also has a cozy headrest with a removable pillow, so if you want to sit back and take a nap, well, go for it. And we can’t overlook the seat itself, which reclines up to 160 degrees and features a lockable system to keep your position secure.

What We Like
- Attractive, versatile style
- Well-made and supportive
- Comfortable for any duration
What We Don't Like
- Visible hardware
Able to support up to 330 pounds, it comes close to our [best design option](https://www.wayfair.com/school-furniture-and-supplies/pdp/the-twillery-co-alcorn-stackable-acrylic-folding-chair-set-w110262458.html) (which can support 20 more pounds), though it does fall short compared to our [overall best](https://www.homedepot.com/p/HDX-Plastic-Seat-Folding-Chair-in-Black-2FF0010P/204269967).
The one downside to these surprisingly comfy and attractive folding chairs is the hardware is more visible than we prefer. You can see the hardware that connects the polyurethane straps to the chair’s wood frame, and the underside of those straps is a different color (which you can also see from some angles). It’s not a dealbreaker for us, but it does mean these chairs aren’t as sleekly designed as, say, our [best wood option](https://www.wayfair.com/school-furniture-and-supplies/pdp/corrigan-studio-upholstered-padded-stackable-chair-w112359364.html).

What We Like
- Provides ample shade
- Weather-resistant fabric
- As lightweight as a backpack
What We Don't Like
- Canopy isn’t adjustable
This folding chair may not recline like our [best outdoor option](https://www.target.com/p/best-choice-products-folding-zero-gravity-recliner-patio-lounge-chair-w-canopy-shade-headrest-tray-sunflower-yellow/-/A-88564634), but we like that it has a much longer canopy for better sun protection. This is a great companion for camping, outdoor concerts, [lounging at the beach](https://www.thespruce.com/best-beach-chairs-5113146), RV road tripping, and sports games, especially since it has two cup holders (and don’t we all need at least two drinks at a time?), one on each armrest.
We like how easily this chair folds up. At 12 pounds, it’s also among the most portable options on our list, and you can wear it like a backpack when you’re transporting it.
Since it’s designed for outdoor use first and foremost, we appreciate the durable and weather-resistant Oxford cloth material. You don’t have to worry about fading from the sun or any icky mildew build-up over time. Cleaning is also a breeze as you really only need a damp cloth.
While the canopy isn’t tiltable, we don’t think that’s a dealbreaker. Since it’s so large overall, you shouldn’t have a problem keeping the sun rays at bay.

What We Like
- Smooth rocking with shock absorbers
- Breathable mesh back
- Easy folding mechanism
What We Don't Like
- Chair is a bit short
Good for tailgating, picnics, and just about any outdoor adventure (even those in your own backyard!), this folding rocking chair has a patented spring-action technology to help absorb shock and make you feel like you’re floating.
It’s sturdy and holds up for 250 pounds, so you can rock away day or night in comfort.
While this is sure to be your go-to outdoor folding chair, one drawback is it may be considered a little short and low to the ground for some (however that’s a plus for petite customers).

## Final Verdict
With a durable steel frame and a flexible seat and back, the [HDX Plastic Seat Folding Chair](https://www.homedepot.com/p/HDX-Plastic-Seat-Folding-Chair-in-Black-2FF0010P/204269967) is our overall best pick for a chair that folds up compactly and offers solid comfort in various settings. If you’re looking for something more stylish that’ll fit in at your dining table, we also like the [Ikea Frosvi Folding Chair](https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/froesvi-folding-chair-white-knisa-light-gray-50534335/), our most comfortable option that offers extra padding.
## How We Picked the Folding Chairs
We looked at several factors to select the best folding chairs, but we started our search with overall style and comfort. Not only are these designs on-trend, but we also found many folding chairs have additional features, such as large canopies, rocking abilities, and foam padding that go beyond basic metal.
We also wanted to make sure to cover each type and different use case for folding chairs, whether it’s primarily for outdoor use and camping or simply an everyday option for guests or events.
## What to Look for in a Folding Chair
### Choose a Comfortable Seat
The first priority of any chair, folding or not, should be comfort. While folding chairs do have a reputation for being not-so-comfy for long periods, we've learned in our research that comfortable (and padded) options *do* exist.
In fact, many of today's best folding chairs are elevated versions that offer design details meant to enhance your comfort.
Padded cushioning is now common on many folding chairs, like the [Corrigan Studio Upholstered Padded Stackable Chair](https://www.wayfair.com/school-furniture-and-supplies/pdp/corrigan-studio-upholstered-padded-stackable-chair-w112359364.html) (our favorite wood option) and the [Ikea FRĂ–SVI Folding Chair](https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/froesvi-folding-chair-white-knisa-light-gray-50534335/) (our most comfortable choice), others simply use canvas or polyester fabric and metal. We find that webbing can make for a comfortable seat that molds to your body (we like the [Soohow Wood Folding Chairs](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D5LMTL29/?tag=thespruce-onsite-prod-20&ascsubtag=4160103%7Cn2dd11f609e1f4b199d3ba306e65a7e4301), our best indoor pick, for this).
### Opt for Durable Materials
As you start shopping for the best folding chairs, think about how—and where—you'll primarily use them.
Will the chairs be used for your [patio or outdoor space](http://thespruce.com/best-lawn-chairs-8694080)? For camping trips or the beach? A companion to a writing desk? Questions like these will help you decide which materials make the best folding chair for your unique situation, as well as what additional features may be beneficial, like canopies and reclining seat backs.
If you’re primarily using your folding chair for the outdoors, it’s important to look for rust-resistant steel frames with weather-resistant fabric like this [Best Choice Products Folding Zero Gravity Recliner Patio Lounge](https://www.target.com/p/best-choice-products-folding-zero-gravity-recliner-patio-lounge-chair-w-canopy-shade-headrest-tray-sunflower-yellow/-/A-88564634) (our best for outdoor use option). However, if you do leave your folding chair out in the rain, be sure to let it completely air-dry before folding it back up.
For indoor use, you can really choose any fabric that matches your existing home décor or opt for a chic, translucent acrylic material like this [Alcorn Stackable Acrylic Folding Chair Set](https://www.wayfair.com/school-furniture-and-supplies/pdp/the-twillery-co-alcorn-stackable-acrylic-folding-chair-set-w110262458.html) (our best design pick).
### Research Size and Weight Capacity
Most folding chairs aren’t really designed for super tall or larger bodies, as most have a load-bearing capacity of up to 250 to 300 pounds and tend to be lower to the ground than standard chairs.
Some, however, like this [HDX Plastic Seat Folding Chai](https://www.homedepot.com/p/HDX-Plastic-Seat-Folding-Chair-in-Black-2FF0010P/204269967)r, have a higher load-capacity at up to 600 pounds. Pay close attention to the seat depth and chair height when shopping around, as even the most comfortable chair will feel awkward if it’s simply too short or low to the ground for your body type.
### One More Thing
It shouldn’t take more than a few seconds to open and collapse a newer folding chair. Look for a chair with an easy open/close mechanism, but note that each one functions a bit differently.
The [GCI Outdoor Freestyle Rocker Camping Chair](https://www.amazon.com/GCI-Outdoor-Freestyle-Portable-Folding/dp/B00D4JYR62/?th=1&tag=thespruce-onsite-prod-20&ascsubtag=4160103%7Cn2dd11f609e1f4b199d3ba306e65a7e4301), for instance, comes with a side strap on the seat that folds the entire frame in one movement. Be sure to keep your chair rust-free so as to not encumber the movement over time.

| Readable Markdown | Remember those wildly uncomfortable folding chairs you used to sit on in school auditoriums and gymnasiums, the kind where the hard aluminum would stick to your skin and make your body ache after about three minutes? Those uninspired chair designs are a thing of the past. It’s now possible to find surprisingly chic folding chairs online—ones that are actually comfortable to use (we know, because we did the research for you).
You don’t have to trade function for form, as many folding chairs are just as aesthetically pleasing as they are convenient for portability. Whether you’re looking to save space or want an everyday chair for your [dining table](https://www.thespruce.com/best-round-dining-tables-4783969), there are plenty of designs to suit a variety of needs and budgets.
We’ve rounded up the best folding chairs, including [weather-resistant rockers](https://www.thespruce.com/best-outdoor-rocking-chairs-11713938) and [mid-century modern-inspired designs](https://www.thespruce.com/midcentury-modern-dining-rooms-7563944), cushiony contemporary models and options for minimalist aesthetics. So, grab a seat and take your pick.
What We Like
- Flexible seat and back
- Durable steel frame
**Dimensions:** 22\.04 x 21.25 x 21.39 inches \| **Material:** Solid and manufactured wood, upholstery \| **Weight:** 14.66 pounds \| **Weight Capacity:** 330 pounds

- Includes canopy, headrest, and tray
What We Don't Like
- Lower weight capacity
When it comes to lounging outdoors, this [zero-gravity folding chair](https://www.thespruce.com/best-zero-gravity-chairs-4173637) is one of the best options.

What We Like
- Attractive, versatile style
- Well-made and supportive
- Comfortable for any duration
What We Don't Like
- Visible hardware

**Dimensions:** 22 x 36.6 x 50 inches \| **Material:** Canvas, metal \| **Weight:** 12 pounds \| **Weight Capacity:** 300 pounds
What We Like
- Smooth rocking with shock absorbers
- Breathable mesh back
- Easy folding mechanism
What We Don't Like
- Chair is a bit short
Good for tailgating, picnics, and just about any outdoor adventure (even those in your own backyard!), this folding rocking chair has a patented spring-action technology to help absorb shock and make you feel like you’re floating.
