Meta TitleBest Memes of 2024: The 11 Most Mindful and Demure Internet Moments of the Year | Them
Meta DescriptionFrom Challengers throuple memes to ‘Wicked’ poster discourse, gay Twitter still has the juice.
Meta Canonicalnull
Boilerpipe Text
Twitter hasn’t been the same ever since billionaire Elon Musk bought it in 2022 and reintroduced it as X. Still, the spirit of gay Twitter has proved to be remarkably persistent, regularly churning out memes, goofs, and gags on par with the posts that defined the platform in its heyday. Sure, you may have had to scroll through crypto scams and bogus supplement ads to get to the good stuff, but it was still there. And for the more pop culture-oriented memery and fanposting, TikTok helped fill in the gaps, as the endless Rhaenicent edits proved. As more of the internet’s queerest and cleverest denizens migrate to BlueSky this month, hopefully this online culture can recreate itself elsewhere, but for now most of the best memes of 2024 were born on a website owned by a man who despises the kind of people who make them. Let this be a lesson: If you want to stay in touch with online culture, you need to follow the gay people, not alienate them. Amid the otherwise hellish landscape of 2024, queer posters delivered some of our only moments of laughter and catharsis: Challengers ended up making $96 million at the box office, but it felt at times like there were more tweets about it than there were tickets sold. Charli XCX and her Brat summer dovetailed nicely with Jools LeBron’s “very demure, very mindful” phenomenon to keep our collective mood light during the warmer months. And come fall, nothing brought more joy than scrolling through hyperspecific niche Halloween costumes and Wicked memes that revealed just how media-obsessed many LGBTQ+ people are. To cap off this turbulent year, I asked Them staffers to share their favorite memes of the year — the posts that carried us through to an uncertain 2025. After reviewing them all, I think you’ll agree: As posters, queer people are unmatched, but maybe we should (sometimes) log off. — Samantha Allen “Three tickets to Challengers , please” Clearly, the movie left plenty of viewers reminiscing about their own favorite would-be pop culture polycules. They say the humble triangle is the strongest shape, and it certainly had its moment this spring thanks to Luca Guadagnino’s tennis threesome movie. Upon release, social media users had a field day imagining the kind of fictional triads who might go see Challengers together, ranging from April Ludgate and her gay boyfriends in Parks and Recreation to, of course, Bella, Edward, and Jacob from Twilight . That latter trio leads to a natural question: Would a werewolf or a vampire be more likely to win the New Rochelle Challenger? Hopefully we’ll find out one day. —  Samantha Allen J.K. Rowling mold infestation In July, J.K. Rowling changed her profile picture on X to a seemingly innocuous selfie — that is, until the internet seized upon a dark smudge on one of her walls in the background. People immediately latched onto the joke that the Harry Potter author’s home has been infested with black mold for years, leading to a slow breakdown of her sanity that has resulted in a near-pathological obsession with trans people. Of course, there’s no evidence that Rowling’s home is actually mold-ridden. But it’s definitely easier (and most importantly, funnier) to think about her being transphobic because of fungi-induced madness rather than her just being a genuine bigot. — James Factora Rhaenicent The relationship between Rhaenyra and Alicent may not be canonically queer, but even the actors see the signs. No show had the same impact on my Twitter feed this year as House of the Dragon season two did. As a Game of Thrones fans who is very much still upset about the final season, I refused to watch the first season of HotD
until I discovered Rhaenicent memes. Once I caught up, I spent every single Sunday watching the new season and nothing brought me more joy than scrolling through Rhaenicent edits afterward, reveling in the tension of the will-they-won’t-they relationship between Queen Rhaenyra (the one and only Emma D’Arcy) and Alicent Olivia Cooke. This show gave us drama, yearning, dragons, fighting over the throne, and a lot of prolonged eye contact. Plus, some really hot British accents. This wasn’t just a solitary experience, either; as my DMs with our senior news editor Sally Tamarkin prove, a lot of queer viewers bonded over their love of Rhaenicent. — Ana Osorno “I hate gay Halloween” What do you mean you’re the bisexual couch from IKEA’s 2021 Pride collection? When it comes to Halloween costumes, queer people tend to cook a little too hard. Gone are the days when we would dress up as firefighters or princesses. Now, we have to be “the guy who shoved Brittany Broski during the ‘Apple’ dance at the Sweat tour in LA” or the literal serve from Challengers . The absurdity of this trend inspired a counter-reaction in the form of exhausted “I hate gay Halloween” tweets in 2022 and 2023 , but this year it backfired, with people simply citing the phrase ironically as they posted their extremely niche costumes. Look, as a community, it’s time for us to look inward. If you want to tell someone you’ve seen a queer arthouse film, get a Letterboxd account. If you want to go to a Halloween party, be a witch or a ghost. — Samantha Allen “Is your pussy green?” The Wicked meme is back on our feeds in part because Erivo posted about it. Here's the origin story. * Elder voice * Ten years ago, in the wake of the smash success of Wicked , the Wizard of Oz prequel that took Broadway by storm, an unnamed graffiti scribe (poet? artist? savant?) wrote four simple words on the iconic poster for the musical: “Is your pussy green?” The seminal image became a meme passed down through the eons, reemerging each year until one day a movie adaptation was finally born. But when internet fans of Wicked started to recirculate the meme, the film’s Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) was not having it at all. “This is the wildest, most offensive thing I have seen,” she wrote, with further complaints about the meme. Erivo has since walked back her outrage. “I probably should have called my friends,” she later told Entertainment Tonight . — Fran Tirado “Girl, so confusing” fancams Seems like lots of people agree with Charli’s own take on Lorde’s verse: “F**king hell.” After Charli XCX and Lorde worked it out on the remix, the internet did indeed go crazy. And of course, this meant that the song instantly became fodder for countless TikToks about famous duos of best frenemies. There are the usual suspects, like Jennifer and Needy of Jennifer’s Body . But my favorites are the ones that are decidedly kind of out there, like this weirdly intricate edit of Squidward from Spongebob Squarepants , and this one of Morrissey and Robert Smith . — James Factora “Mama, kudos for saying that. For spilling.” No sooner did Plane Jane utter these words to fellow Drag Race contestant Q than a new meme was born. In certain contexts, some queer lingo isn’t even appropriate for the Werk Room — and that was arguably the case with Drag Race contestant Plane Jane’s response to Q talking about the stigma of being HIV-positive: “Mama, kudos for saying that. For spilling.” The viral moment inspired a wave of captioned movie and TV stills imagining what it would be like for characters to say those iconic words in other inappropriate situations. My personal favorite? Jennifer Garner in Love, Simon responding to her son’s coming out. But there are many more that we’ve curated for your enjoyment. Remember: There are moments in life that call for us to erase the gay dictionary from our brains and simply say things like, “Thank you,” and we’d do well to recognize them. — Samantha Allen “Very demure, very mindful” Demure is the moment. Here’s how trans women created TikTok’s latest viral internet trend. If you were on the internet this fall (or perhaps wearing a dreaded green cut crease), you couldn’t go anywhere without hearing the phrase “very demure, very mindful.” Coined by trans creator Jools LeBron , the trend pokes fun at videos providing earnest advice about how to be classy, or “demure” and “mindful,” and just highlights that once again, trans women are the tastemakers and trendsetters of our culture. Despite people trying to steal her shine and go so far as attempting to trademark the phrase out from under her, LeBron came out victorious and has even been able to earn enough money to afford the rest of her gender-affirming care thanks to the fateful TikTok. — Quispe López “Chudai” A word from the 1800s has found new life in gay memes and among OnlyFans creators, but what’s the translation and why is it all over my explicit content? “Chudai give up or chudai just keep chasing pavements?” That is the question that has plagued consumers of X-rated content, particularly those who’ve seen the word “chudai” routinely used as a caption for porn with no context on how or why that word was being used. Them diligently reported on an origin story for the Urdu slang, which simply means “sex.” Case closed! Now wait, but wtf is “Wataa?” — Fran Tirado Halsey’s multiple impersonations Halsey has been posting an impersonation daily to tease her album, The Great Impersonator. As part of the publicity for her fifth studio album, The Great Impersonator , Halsey posted a series of photos and videos of herself impersonating her artistic inspirations, like Marilyn Monroe , Fiona Apple , and Bruce Springsteen . X users then chimed in with their own edits of Halsey “impersonating” various figures, like Sue Sylvester from Glee , Taylor Swift , and Victoria from Twilight . There was also even one post likening James Charles to Halsey impersonating Pink, which is gutting and hilarious in its accuracy. — James Factora “Which could mean nothing
” TikTok has been overtaken with memes celebrating Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s close friendship. Fewer things made me feel more ancient this year than learning that Gen Z had discovered Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s close friendship and begun making TikToks about this infamous bit of reportage from blogger Lainey Gossip: “Matt Damon not wearing wedding ring again during another visit to Ben Affleck’s house which could mean nothing.” Homoerotic fancams multiplied this year to the point that they inspired a full-on trend piece here at Them , But really ? Did people truly not know that Mattfleck was a thing until now? It’s not like there are very many Zoomer movie stars (yet) to pay attention to, and these two best buds have been appearing in movies together since the early ’90s. Has nobody under the age of 30 streamed Good Will Hunting ? Alas, time comes for us all. — Samantha Allen Get the best of what’s queer. Sign up for Them ’s weekly newsletter here.

Twitter hasn’t been the same ever since billionaire Elon Musk [bought it](https://www.them.us/story/trans-twitter-death-tik-tok-tumblr) in 2022 and reintroduced it as X. And for the more pop culture-oriented memery and fanposting, TikTok helped fill in the gaps, as the endless [Rhaenicent edits](https://www.them.us/story/house-of-the-dragon-rhaenicent-ship-sapphic-coded-relationship) proved. As more of the internet’s queerest and cleverest denizens [migrate to BlueSky](https://www.npr.org/2024/11/19/g-s1-34898/bluesky-traffic-surge-after-election) this month, hopefully this online culture can recreate itself elsewhere, but for now most of the best memes of 2024 were born on a website owned by a man who despises the kind of people who make them. Let this be a lesson: If you want to stay in touch with online culture, you need to follow the gay people, not alienate them. Amid the otherwise hellish landscape of 2024, queer posters delivered some of our only moments of laughter and catharsis: *Challengers* ended up making \$96 million at the box office, but it felt at times like there were more tweets about it than there were tickets sold. Charli XCX and her [*Brat* summer](https://www.them.us/story/charli-xcx-gregg-araki-brat-album-cover) dovetailed nicely with [Jools LeBron’s](https://www.them.us/story/what-is-demure-jools-lebron-tik-tok-trend) “very demure, very mindful” phenomenon to keep our collective mood light during the warmer months. And come fall, nothing brought more joy than scrolling through [hyperspecific niche Halloween costumes](https://www.them.us/story/i-hate-gay-halloween-memes-chappell-roan-bottoms-challengers) and [*Wicked* memes](https://www.them.us/story/is-your-pussy-green-meme-wicked-movie-cynthia-erivo) that revealed just how media-obsessed many LGBTQ+ people are. To cap off this turbulent year, I asked *Them* staffers to share their favorite memes of the year — the posts that carried us through to an uncertain 2025. After reviewing them all, I think you’ll agree: As posters, queer people are unmatched, but maybe we should (sometimes) log off. — *Samantha Allen* ## **“Three tickets to *Challengers*, please”** ![Image may contain: Aubrey Plaza, Person, Teen, Adult, Head, Face, and Text](https://media.them.us/photos/662fc2f82cc2ace8e1b4904c/master/w_775%2Cc_limit/challengers.jpg) Clearly, the movie left plenty of viewers reminiscing about their own favorite would-be pop culture polycules. They say the humble triangle is the strongest shape, and it certainly [had its moment](https://www.them.us/story/challengers-throuple-memes-three-tickets) this spring thanks to Luca Guadagnino’s tennis threesome movie. Upon release, social media users had a field day imagining the kind of fictional triads who might go see *Challengers* together, ranging from April Ludgate and her gay boyfriends in *Parks and Recreation* to, of course, Bella, Edward, and Jacob from *Twilight*. That latter trio leads to a natural question: Would a werewolf or a vampire be more likely to win the New Rochelle Challenger? Hopefully we’ll find out one day. — *Samantha Allen* ## **J.K. Rowling mold infestation** In July, J.K. Rowling changed her profile picture on X to a seemingly innocuous selfie — that is, until the internet seized upon a dark smudge on one of her walls in the background. People immediately [latched](https://x.com/MarkGComedyUK/status/1821581851263488211) [onto](https://x.com/marionumber4/status/1819377423315579366) [the](https://x.com/NeilNevins/status/1818623509758984479) [joke](https://x.com/DewEnjoyer/status/1826974005464596595) that the *Harry Potter* author’s home has been infested with black mold for years, leading to a slow breakdown of her sanity that has resulted in a near-pathological obsession with trans people. Of course, there’s no evidence that Rowling’s home is actually mold-ridden. But it’s definitely easier (and most importantly, funnier) to think about her being transphobic because of fungi-induced madness rather than her just being a genuine bigot. — *James Factora* ## **Rhaenicent** ![A still from ‘House of the Dragon’ showing two characters in dresses standing in front of a banquet.](https://media.them.us/photos/66840e3ad017fb43a29ec6ce/master/w_775%2Cc_limit/olivia_emma_header_HOTD.jpg) The relationship between Rhaenyra and Alicent may not be canonically queer, but even the actors see the signs. No show had the same impact on my Twitter feed this year as *House of the Dragon* season two did. As a *Game of Thrones* fans who is very much still upset about the final season, I refused to watch the first season of *HotD*
until I discovered Rhaenicent memes. This show gave us drama, yearning, dragons, fighting over the throne, and *a lot* of prolonged eye contact. Plus, some really hot British accents. This wasn’t just a solitary experience, either; as my DMs with our senior news editor Sally Tamarkin prove, a lot of queer viewers bonded over their love of Rhaenicent. — *Ana Osorno* ## **“I hate gay Halloween”** ![Image may contain: Myriam El Khomri, Ishtar Yasin Gutierrez, Clothing, Costume, Person, Footwear, High Heel, Shoe, and Adult](https://media.them.us/photos/671f9b99b2895fe3df5c541b/master/w_775%2Cc_limit/halloween.jpg) What do you mean you’re the bisexual couch from IKEA’s 2021 Pride collection? When it comes to Halloween costumes, queer people tend to cook a little *too* hard. Gone are the days when we would dress up as firefighters or princesses. Now, we have to be [“the guy who shoved Brittany Broski during the ‘Apple’ dance at the Sweat tour in LA”](https://x.com/filemyrph/status/1849172184549188055) or the [literal serve from *Challengers*](https://x.com/MOULlNR0UGE/status/1850352701139304951). The absurdity of this trend inspired a counter-reaction in the form of exhausted “I hate gay Halloween” [tweets in 2022 and 2023](https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/i-hate-gay-halloween), but this year it backfired, with people simply citing the phrase ironically as they posted their extremely niche costumes. Look, as a community, it’s time for us to look inward. If you want to tell someone you’ve seen a queer arthouse film, get a Letterboxd account. If you want to go to a Halloween party, be a witch or a ghost. — *Samantha Allen* ## **“Is your pussy green?”** ![Wicked movie poster](https://media.them.us/photos/671120cd8d4a8f57c3f07d08/master/w_775%2Cc_limit/wicked-meme.jpg) The *Wicked* meme is back on our feeds in part because Erivo posted about it. Here's the origin story. \**Elder voice*\* Ten years ago, in the wake of the smash success of *Wicked*, the *Wizard of Oz* prequel that took Broadway by storm, an unnamed graffiti scribe (poet? artist? savant?) wrote four simple words on the iconic poster for the musical: [“Is your pussy green?”](https://www.them.us/story/is-your-pussy-green-meme-wicked-movie-cynthia-erivo) The seminal image became a meme passed down through the eons, reemerging each year until one day a movie adaptation was finally born. But when internet fans of Wicked started to recirculate the meme, the film’s Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) was not having it at all. “This is the wildest, most offensive thing I have seen,” she wrote, with further complaints about the meme. Erivo has since walked back her outrage. “I probably should have called my friends,” she [later told](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ag7UcB5n15A) *Entertainment Tonight*. — *Fran Tirado* ## **“Girl, so confusing” fancams** ![Image may contain: Lorde, Accessories, Clothing, Coat, Sunglasses, Jacket, Adult, Person, Glasses, Long Sleeve, and Sleeve](https://media.them.us/photos/6675ad3547ad0477623339d3/master/w_775%2Cc_limit/THEM%2520Girl%2520So%2520Confusing%2520Remix%2520Header%2520\(1\).jpg) Seems like lots of people agree with Charli’s own take on Lorde’s verse: “F\*\*king hell.” After Charli XCX and Lorde worked it out on the remix, the internet did indeed go crazy. And of course, this meant that the song instantly became fodder for countless TikToks about famous duos of best frenemies. There are the usual suspects, like [Jennifer and Needy](https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZP8L4bSR1/) of *Jennifer’s Body*. But my favorites are the ones that are decidedly kind of out there, like this [weirdly intricate edit](https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZP8L4abbT/) of Squidward from *Spongebob Squarepants*, and this one of [Morrissey and Robert Smith](https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZP8L4nEb8/). — *James Factora* ## **“Mama, kudos for saying that. For spilling.”** ![Plane Jane](https://media.them.us/photos/65f99e4ab6b6a00f2cb588fc/master/w_775%2Cc_limit/mama_kudos.jpeg) No sooner did Plane Jane utter these words to fellow *Drag Race* contestant Q than a new meme was born. In certain contexts, some queer lingo isn’t even appropriate for the Werk Room — and that was arguably the case with *Drag Race* contestant Plane Jane’s response to Q talking about the stigma of being HIV-positive: “Mama, kudos for saying that. For spilling.” The viral moment inspired a wave of captioned movie and TV stills imagining what it would be like for characters to say those iconic words in other inappropriate situations. My personal favorite? [Jennifer Garner in *Love, Simon* responding to her son’s coming out.](https://x.com/TomZohar/status/1769185873613238565) But there are many more that [we’ve curated](https://www.them.us/story/our-favorite-mama-kudos-for-saying-that-for-spilling-memes-so-far) for your enjoyment. Remember: There are moments in life that call for us to erase the gay dictionary from our brains and simply say things like, “Thank you,” and we’d do well to recognize them. — *Samantha Allen* ## **“Very demure, very mindful”** ![An influencer in various poses, in pink, against a yellow backdrop, with text that says, “very demure” and “very mindful.”](https://media.them.us/photos/66be6319ab47ff383bd9da67/master/w_775%2Cc_limit/THEM%2520Demure%2520Mindful%2520Header.jpg) Demure is the moment. Here’s how trans women created TikTok’s latest viral internet trend. If you were on the internet this fall (or perhaps wearing a dreaded green cut crease), you couldn’t go anywhere without hearing the phrase “very demure, very mindful.” Coined by [trans creator Jools LeBron](https://www.them.us/story/what-is-demure-jools-lebron-tik-tok-trend), the trend pokes fun at videos providing earnest advice about how to be classy, or “demure” and “mindful,” and just highlights that once again, trans women are the tastemakers and trendsetters of our culture. Despite people trying to steal her shine and go so far as [attempting to trademark](https://www.them.us/story/jools-lebron-mindful-demure-meme-trademark-application) the phrase out from under her, LeBron came out victorious and has even been able to earn enough money to afford the rest of her gender-affirming care thanks to the fateful TikTok. — *Quispe López* ## **“Chudai”** ![Image may contain: Chess, Game, and Text](https://media.them.us/photos/66ff14c22b45f10cb211b02f/master/w_775%2Cc_limit/chudai-2.jpg) A word from the 1800s has found new life in gay memes and among OnlyFans creators, but what’s the translation and why is it all over my explicit content? “Chudai give up or chudai just keep chasing pavements?” That is the question that has plagued consumers of X-rated content, particularly those who’ve seen the word “chudai” routinely used as a caption for porn with no context on how or why that word was being used. *Them* [diligently reported](https://www.them.us/story/what-is-chudai-why-porn-captions-twitter-translation-origin-slang-term-onlyfans-x-india-brazil) on an origin story for the Urdu slang, which simply means “sex.” Case closed!
