When Sabrina Carpenter said “That’s that me-espresso,” that really made me feel
seen.
I’ve long taken coffee seriously — even back in my middle-school Starbucks Java Chip Frappuccino days. It’s truly what gets me out of bed in the morning. I’ve even got the coffee bean (and coffee maker) collection to show for it.Â
After
taste-testing instant coffees
(and finding that some are wildly good), I decided to tackle the next frontier: Costco’s sprawling coffee section.

Much like
its impressive wine section
, Costco’s coffee aisle has plenty of bulk-sized bags at budget-friendly prices. (Psst! You can
sign up for a membership over here
.) I tried every whole bean coffee at my local warehouse — 10 in total! These are the five you’ll want to check out on your next bulk shopping trip.
Quick Overview
The Best Coffees at Costco at-a-Glance
Winner:
Ruta Maya 100% Organic Coffee, Medium RoastÂ
Runner-Up:
Peet’s Coffee Major Dickason’s Blend, Dark Roast
Best Budget:
Kirkland Signature Coffee House Blend, Medium Roast
Best Espresso:
Lavazza Espresso
Best Decaf:
Mayorga Organic Café Cubano Decaf Coffee, Dark Roast
Credit: Mackenzie Filson
Winner: Ruta Maya 100% Organic Coffee, Medium Roast, $44.99 for 5 pounds
Ruta Maya’s giant bag matches the boldness within. Beyond its clear bulk-budgeting appeal (that five pounds is gonna last you a
while
), it’s roasty-toasty, lightly bright, yet very rich. It both creates a nice, light crema out of my Moka Pot, and has notes of chocolate when you cold-brew it.Â
This medium roast quickly rose to the top of my ranks purely because it was the coffee I couldn’t wait to drink again after all my taste-testing. May I never see the bottom of this hefty bag! Not for a while, at least.Â
Credit: Mackenzie Filson
Runner-Up: Peet’s Coffee Major Dickason’s Blend Coffee, Dark Roast, $18.99 for two pounds
I was a bit skeptical of a blend from a coffee chain, until a Costco employee pointed out that this Peet’s Major Dickason Blend is not only a customer favorite, but also a staff favorite. Let me tell you: That person did not lead me astray. Immediately, a cup of this dark roast made me think
this is Christmas Morning coffee
.Â
Major Dickason will deliver for all kinds of guests: bean snobs, gas station coffee connoisseurs, and those mostly in it for caffeine. The roast level is “Just Dark Roasted Enough”; it’s rich and robust, yet lightly toasted
just enough
to not scare anyone who typically drinks a medium or light roast.Â
Credit: Mackenzie Filson
Best Budget Buy: Kirkland Signature House Blend, Medium Roast, $12.99 for 2.5 poundsÂ
When at Costco, you must always consider
Costco’s store-brand, Kirkland Signature
. I asked the medium roast blend, “
Can It Kirkland?
” and indeed, this coffee can. Plus, it’s the biggest steal of the bunch, with only $12.99 keeping you from 2.5 glorious pounds of whole beans.Â
I’d heard
via Reddit
that this blend is no longer roasted by Starbucks, and I was curious to see if the flavor of the new bags of Kirkland Signature House Blend had shifted. As you might expect, I found a
slight
change, but certainly not for the worse. I’d say this is on the verge of becoming a dark roast on the roast spectrum (rather than medium), but makes for a mellow, burnt sugar-adjacent cold brew in the French press.
Credit: Mackenzie Filson
Best Espresso: Lavazza Espresso, $17.99 for 2.2 pounds
Fun fact: Just because a bag says “espresso” doesn’t mean it has to be brewed in an espresso style! It simply just refers to how the beans are roasted. So if you’re a fan of strong, bold espresso (but maybe don’t want to shell out for a fancy machine), you’ll for sure want to grab a bag of the Lavazza Espresso (just grind it to the specifications of your specific machine).Â
I first brewed mine in an
Aeropress
for an oat milk macchiato. It had a balance of fruitiness, nutty richness, and a bit of sweetness that made me feel like I was leaning my hip against an Italian cafe counter. It’d also be dreamy in a French press for when you’re needing more than just a quick thimble of coffee.Â
Credit: Mackenzie Filson
Best Decaf: Mayorga Organic Café Cubano Decaf Coffee, Dark Roast, $44.99 for 2 (2-pound) bags
Death before decaf, I know, I know. But! Sometimes I want a bit of decaf when enjoying an Irish coffee as a nightcap or for making a half-caf cup in the afternoon. Truth be told, I barely could tell any distinguishable difference between the strength and flavor of Mayorga Decaf CafĂ© Cubano Roast and the full-caffeine counterparts.Â
I grew up in Florida with plentiful Cuban coffee around me (and warning symbols on the cafecito), and I was really impressed by the rich, smooth, caramelized sweetness of the Mayorga decaf. You certainly won’t feel like you’re missing out on anything — not in the flavor department or in the accidentally-staying-up-all-night department.Â
How I Tested Costco’s CoffeesÂ
Typically I brew my coffee with either a
Bialetti Moka Pot
or my
Aeropress
, and both work best with medium-fine grounds, like most drip coffee makers. I tested the 10 whole bean coffees in both coffee-making apparatuses, with my favorites moving on to the final round: the cold brew round (with my
Stanley French Press
). The winners brewed well in all three coffee makers (black, unsweetened), making them each suitable for drip, espresso, and cold-brew brewing methods.Â

When Sabrina Carpenter said “That’s that me-espresso,” that really made me feel *seen.* I’ve long taken coffee seriously — even back in my middle-school Starbucks Java Chip Frappuccino days. It’s truly what gets me out of bed in the morning. I’ve even got the coffee bean (and coffee maker) collection to show for it.
After [taste-testing instant coffees](https://www.thekitchn.com/best-instant-coffee-23632498) (and finding that some are wildly good), I decided to tackle the next frontier: Costco’s sprawling coffee section.

Much like [its impressive wine section](https://www.thekitchn.com/best-costco-wine-23580086), Costco’s coffee aisle has plenty of bulk-sized bags at budget-friendly prices. (Psst! You can [sign up for a membership over here](https://stacksocial.sjv.io/c/411648/1168624/14766?subId1=AT-SID&u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.stacksocial.com%2Fsales%2Fcostco-1-year-gold-star-membership-45-digital-costco-shop-card).) I tried every whole bean coffee at my local warehouse — 10 in total! These are the five you’ll want to check out on your next bulk shopping trip.

Winner: Ruta Maya 100% Organic Coffee, Medium Roast, \$44.99 for 5 pounds
Ruta Maya’s giant bag matches the boldness within. Beyond its clear bulk-budgeting appeal (that five pounds is gonna last you a *while*), it’s roasty-toasty, lightly bright, yet very rich. It both creates a nice, light crema out of my Moka Pot, and has notes of chocolate when you cold-brew it.
This medium roast quickly rose to the top of my ranks purely because it was the coffee I couldn’t wait to drink again after all my taste-testing. May I never see the bottom of this hefty bag! Not for a while, at least.

Runner-Up: Peet’s Coffee Major Dickason’s Blend Coffee, Dark Roast, \$18.99 for two pounds
I was a bit skeptical of a blend from a coffee chain, until a Costco employee pointed out that this Peet’s Major Dickason Blend is not only a customer favorite, but also a staff favorite. Let me tell you: That person did not lead me astray. Immediately, a cup of this dark roast made me think *this is Christmas Morning coffee*.
Major Dickason will deliver for all kinds of guests: bean snobs, gas station coffee connoisseurs, and those mostly in it for caffeine. The roast level is “Just Dark Roasted Enough”; it’s rich and robust, yet lightly toasted *just enough* to not scare anyone who typically drinks a medium or light roast.

Best Budget Buy: Kirkland Signature House Blend, Medium Roast, \$12.99 for 2.5 pounds
When at Costco, you must always consider [Costco’s store-brand, Kirkland Signature](https://www.thekitchn.com/best-kirkland-signature-products-costco-256056). I asked the medium roast blend, “[Can It Kirkland?](https://punchdrink.com/articles/costco-liquor-can-it-kirkland-spirits/)” and indeed, this coffee can. Plus, it’s the biggest steal of the bunch, with only \$12.99 keeping you from 2.5 glorious pounds of whole beans.
I’d heard [via Reddit](https://www.reddit.com/r/Costco/comments/196x0go/did_starbucks_stop_roasting_the_kirkland/) that this blend is no longer roasted by Starbucks, and I was curious to see if the flavor of the new bags of Kirkland Signature House Blend had shifted. As you might expect, I found a *slight* change, but certainly not for the worse. I’d say this is on the verge of becoming a dark roast on the roast spectrum (rather than medium), but makes for a mellow, burnt sugar-adjacent cold brew in the French press.

Best Espresso: Lavazza Espresso, \$17.99 for 2.2 pounds
Fun fact: Just because a bag says “espresso” doesn’t mean it has to be brewed in an espresso style! It simply just refers to how the beans are roasted. So if you’re a fan of strong, bold espresso (but maybe don’t want to shell out for a fancy machine), you’ll for sure want to grab a bag of the Lavazza Espresso (just grind it to the specifications of your specific machine).
I first brewed mine in an [Aeropress](https://www.amazon.com/Aeropress-Clear-Coffee-Press-bitterness/dp/B0C3KDC3FJ/?asc_campaign=KT-265445&asc_refurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thekitchn.com%2Fbest-costco-coffee-265445&asc_source=&tag=kitchn-20) for an oat milk macchiato. It had a balance of fruitiness, nutty richness, and a bit of sweetness that made me feel like I was leaning my hip against an Italian cafe counter. It’d also be dreamy in a French press for when you’re needing more than just a quick thimble of coffee.

Best Decaf: Mayorga Organic Café Cubano Decaf Coffee, Dark Roast, \$44.99 for 2 (2-pound) bags
Death before decaf, I know, I know. But! Sometimes I want a bit of decaf when enjoying an Irish coffee as a nightcap or for making a half-caf cup in the afternoon. Truth be told, I barely could tell any distinguishable difference between the strength and flavor of Mayorga Decaf Café Cubano Roast and the full-caffeine counterparts.
I grew up in Florida with plentiful Cuban coffee around me (and warning symbols on the cafecito), and I was really impressed by the rich, smooth, caramelized sweetness of the Mayorga decaf. You certainly won’t feel like you’re missing out on anything — not in the flavor department or in the accidentally-staying-up-all-night department.
How I Tested Costco’s Coffees
Typically I brew my coffee with either a [Bialetti Moka Pot](https://www.amazon.com/Bialetti-275-06-Express-6-Cup-Espresso/dp/B00004RFRU?asc_campaign=KT-265445&asc_refurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thekitchn.com%2Fbest-costco-coffee-265445&asc_source=&tag=kitchn-20) or my [Aeropress](https://www.amazon.com/Aeropress-Clear-Coffee-Press-bitterness/dp/B0C3KDC3FJ/?asc_campaign=KT-265445&asc_refurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thekitchn.com%2Fbest-costco-coffee-265445&asc_source=&tag=kitchn-20), and both work best with medium-fine grounds, like most drip coffee makers. I tested the 10 whole bean coffees in both coffee-making apparatuses, with my favorites moving on to the final round: the cold brew round (with my [Stanley French Press](https://www.amazon.com/Stanley-Insulation-Stainless-Ergonomic-Dishwasher/dp/B09PL6X1WH?asc_campaign=KT-265445&asc_refurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thekitchn.com%2Fbest-costco-coffee-265445&asc_source=&tag=kitchn-20)). The winners brewed well in all three coffee makers (black, unsweetened), making them each suitable for drip, espresso, and cold-brew brewing methods.
