How We Tested the Coffee Beans
What gets you going in the morning? For many of us, it’s a
cup of coffee
. And the best part of being a coffee drinker is exploring all of the different brands, blends, and beans. With each morning, I learn more about my own flavor preferences.Â
Quick Overview
The Best Medium-Roast Coffee Beans at-a-Glance
Bulletproof Coffee Medium Roast is complex, but well-balanced with notes of citrus, warm spices, and dark chocolate. It was the clear favorite — by far.
There are many factors that can contribute to the flavor of coffee beans, including country of origin and processing techniques, but the most easily noticeable is the level of
roast
. Of the three main types (light, medium, and dark), medium sits comfortably in the middle, offering a balance between the bright, fruity notes of lighter roasts and the rich, chocolaty depth of dark ones. Medium roasts also allow the fresh flavors of the original coffee bean to peek through, with subtle caramelized, toasty notes; they hit the ideal balance of acidity, body, and mouthfeel for drip coffee.

With nearly
endless options on the market
, it’s hard to know which one is worth buying. So I set out to find the best medium-roast coffee out there. I sampled 10 of the most popular varieties in a single afternoon. (Don’t worry! I only took a few sips of each.) I focused on whole-bean coffees over the pre-ground stuff, and selected brands based on availability, popularity, and price. The coffees ranged from $8 up to $22, although most were priced around $15 at the time of tasting.
After an afternoon brewing, sipping, and scoring, these are the medium-roast coffees I’ll be drinking again and again.

Best Medium-Roast Coffee Beans: Bulletproof Coffee Original Medium Roast Coffee
Bulletproof Coffee Original Medium Roast Coffee
had me from the jump. Its initial aroma has a lovely, subtle undertone of floral jasmine and fruit. One sip delivered a punch of zesty citrus flavor and warm spices, and finished with a comforting note of bitter dark chocolate.Â
It had the most nuanced, well-rounded flavor, with a classic toasty cocoa aftertaste that defines a great drip coffee blend. In fact, it scored the highest out of all the other coffees by a point-and-a-half. Really, this is the kind of coffee I could sip every single day without getting bored. Plus, this specific blend is made up of 100% Arabica beans from
Rainforest Alliance-certified farms
in Central and South America.

Runner-Up: Trader Joe’s Wake-Up Blend Medium Roast Coffee
Coming in a close second is Trader Joe’s Wake Up Blend. This relatively affordable, well-balanced coffee combines beans from several Latin American countries, including Honduras and Peru, and delivers the smooth richness expected from a quality medium roast. This coffee will make your home smell like strawberries, tart cherries, and hazelnuts. It follows up with a strong, toasty flavor that rounds out the bright, acidic, and fruity top notes.Â
I especially love this coffee not only because it tastes great, but also because you can buy it in both whole-bean and pre-ground formats. It’s complex without doing too much, and still maintains that classic chocolaty
coffee
taste. Oh, and the brightly colored canister also looks really cute on a kitchen shelf.Â

Honorable Mention: Stumptown Coffee Roasters Holler Mountain Medium Roast Coffee Blend
Stumptown Coffee Holler Mountain Medium Roast
is another solid pick. I actually buy this one pretty regularly because of its consistent, classic flavor of caramel, stewed berries, and lemon (that I also picked up during the taste test!).Â
Its rich, bright flavor profile also works great for espresso. It’s one of my favorites for making iced americanos or
iced coffees
, which let the true bright flavor shine through. There wasn’t any real reason it didn’t score higher — just a lot of stiff competition.Â

Honorable Mention: La Colombe Nizza Medium Roast Coffee
The
La Colombe Nizza Medium Roast
boasted toastier flavor notes like brownies, honey, and a hint of green apple. These beans are a versatile option — well-suited for both drip coffee and espresso. It’s not a fruity roast; it’s rich, smooth, and very satisfying. In fact, the only reason it didn’t score higher is because it feels like a special-occasion, rich coffee rather than one you’d start your day with.Â

Honorable Mention: Peet’s Medium Roast Breakfast Blend
Aromatic, nutty, and a light fruity sweetness made
Peets Breakfast Blend Medium Roast
a fierce competitor and earned it an honorable mention. I’m a huge fan of this coffee’s strong, acidic consistency, and the caramelized brown-sugary aftertaste. At the same time, I did find it to be a bit
too
acidic compared to other coffees in this test.Â
It delivers a classic medium-roast profile that feels both comforting and nostalgic. Conveniently, it’s also available pre-ground (which is ideal for busy mornings).

How We Tested the Coffee Beans
To keep things standard, I assigned each coffee a number ahead of the taste test and poured them into otherwise unmarked cups. I used a
Fellow Ode Brew Grinder Gen 2
to grind five ounces of each bean on the same medium coarse setting, and
Fellow Aiden Precision Coffee Maker
to make one cup of drip coffee for each brand tested. Each cup was brewed at exactly the same temperature of 205°F. I drank and compared each one black (without any sweeteners or milk).Â
Credit: Annie Arriaga
I rated each coffee on a scale of one to five (1 = No, thanks; 2 = Meh; 3 = Pretty good; 4 = Really like; 5 = Yes, Please!) across four criteria: aroma, body, acidity, and flavor. Especially when looking at Medium Roast coffees, I was looking for brightness, richness, and flavor complexity. I took notes on each coffee I tasted and included any specific observations, tasting notes, and general opinions worth mentioning.Â

What gets you going in the morning? For many of us, it’s a [cup of coffee](https://www.thekitchn.com/how-to-make-coffee-23716786). And the best part of being a coffee drinker is exploring all of the different brands, blends, and beans. With each morning, I learn more about my own flavor preferences.
Quick Overview
## The Best Medium-Roast Coffee Beans at-a-Glance
Bulletproof Coffee Medium Roast is complex, but well-balanced with notes of citrus, warm spices, and dark chocolate. It was the clear favorite — by far.
There are many factors that can contribute to the flavor of coffee beans, including country of origin and processing techniques, but the most easily noticeable is the level of *roast*.

With nearly [endless options on the market](https://www.thekitchn.com/the-best-grocery-store-coffee-249565), it’s hard to know which one is worth buying. The coffees ranged from \$8 up to \$22, although most were priced around \$15 at the time of tasting.
After an afternoon brewing, sipping, and scoring, these are the medium-roast coffees I’ll be drinking again and again.

Best Medium-Roast Coffee Beans: Bulletproof Coffee Original Medium Roast Coffee
[Bulletproof Coffee Original Medium Roast Coffee](https://www.amazon.com/Bulletproof-Coffee-Original-Certified-Upgraded/dp/B00R7FG0DC?asc_campaign=KT-22972918&asc_refurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thekitchn.com%2Fbest-coffee-beans-22972918&asc_source=&tag=kitchn-20) had me from the jump. Its initial aroma has a lovely, subtle undertone of floral jasmine and fruit. One sip delivered a punch of zesty citrus flavor and warm spices, and finished with a comforting note of bitter dark chocolate.
Plus, this specific blend is made up of 100% Arabica beans from [Rainforest Alliance-certified farms](https://www.rainforest-alliance.org/what-does-rainforest-alliance-certified-mean/) in Central and South America.
**What’s So Great**
- Nuanced flavor with a classic toasty cocoa finish
- Floral and fruity aroma
**Good to Know**
- Made from 100% Arabica beans sourced from Rainforest Alliance-certified farms

Runner-Up: Trader Joe’s Wake-Up Blend Medium Roast Coffee
Coming in a close second is Trader Joe’s Wake Up Blend. This relatively affordable, well-balanced coffee combines beans from several Latin American countries, including Honduras and Peru, and delivers the smooth richness expected from a quality medium roast. This coffee will make your home smell like strawberries, tart cherries, and hazelnuts. It follows up with a strong, toasty flavor that rounds out the bright, acidic, and fruity top notes.
I especially love this coffee not only because it tastes great, but also because you can buy it in both whole-bean and pre-ground formats. It’s complex without doing too much, and still maintains that classic chocolaty *coffee* taste. Oh, and the brightly colored canister also looks really cute on a kitchen shelf.
**What’s So Great**
- Classic chocolaty coffee taste
- Smells like strawberries, tart cherries, and hazelnuts
- Comes in a beautiful brightly colored canister
**Good to Know**
- Certified organic and fair trade
- Budget buy\!
**Find it in stores**: Trader Joe’s Wake Up Blend Medium Roast Coffee, \$8.99 for 14 ounces at Trader Joe’s

Honorable Mention: Stumptown Coffee Roasters Holler Mountain Medium Roast Coffee Blend
[Stumptown Coffee Holler Mountain Medium Roast](https://www.amazon.com/Stumptown-Coffee-Roasters-Organic-Mountain/dp/B008J4Z3C4?asc_campaign=KT-22972918&asc_refurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thekitchn.com%2Fbest-coffee-beans-22972918&asc_source=&tag=kitchn-20) is another solid pick. I actually buy this one pretty regularly because of its consistent, classic flavor of caramel, stewed berries, and lemon (that I also picked up during the taste test!).
Its rich, bright flavor profile also works great for espresso. It’s one of my favorites for making iced americanos or [iced coffees](https://www.thekitchn.com/the-best-method-for-iced-coffee-at-home-23060256), which let the true bright flavor shine through. There wasn’t any real reason it didn’t score higher — just a lot of stiff competition.
**What’s So Great**
- Tastes like caramel, stewed berries, and lemon
- Great for espresso *and* iced coffees
**Good to Know**
- Organic
- 100% Arabica coffee beans

Honorable Mention: La Colombe Nizza Medium Roast Coffee
The [La Colombe Nizza Medium Roast](https://www.amazon.com/Colombe-Nizza-Whole-Bean-12/dp/B00MZXU6CW?asc_campaign=KT-22972918&asc_refurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thekitchn.com%2Fbest-coffee-beans-22972918&asc_source=&tag=kitchn-20) boasted toastier flavor notes like brownies, honey, and a hint of green apple. These beans are a versatile option — well-suited for both drip coffee and espresso. It’s not a fruity roast; it’s rich, smooth, and very satisfying. In fact, the only reason it didn’t score higher is because it feels like a special-occasion, rich coffee rather than one you’d start your day with.
**What’s So Great**
- Rich, smooth, and very satisfying
- Toastier notes of honey and brownies
**Good to Know**
- Well-suited to drip and espresso
- Maybe a *little* too rich to start every day

Honorable Mention: Peet’s Medium Roast Breakfast Blend
Aromatic, nutty, and a light fruity sweetness made [Peets Breakfast Blend Medium Roast](https://atmedia.link/product?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.peets.com%2Fproducts%2Fbreakfast-blend&referralSource=&id=22972918&site=KT&refUrl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thekitchn.com%2Fbest-coffee-beans-22972918) a fierce competitor and earned it an honorable mention. I’m a huge fan of this coffee’s strong, acidic consistency, and the caramelized brown-sugary aftertaste. At the same time, I did find it to be a bit *too* acidic compared to other coffees in this test.
It delivers a classic medium-roast profile that feels both comforting and nostalgic. Conveniently, it’s also available pre-ground (which is ideal for busy mornings).
**What’s So Great**
- “Caramelized brown-sugary aftertaste”
- Aromatic, nutty, and fruity
**Good to Know**
- Also available pre-ground
- Maybe a bit too acidic

How We Tested the Coffee Beans
To keep things standard, I assigned each coffee a number ahead of the taste test and poured them into otherwise unmarked cups. I used a [Fellow Ode Brew Grinder Gen 2](https://atmedia.link/product?url=https%3A%2F%2Ffellowproducts.com%2Fproducts%2Fode-brew-grinder-gen-2&referralSource=&id=22972918&site=KT&refUrl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thekitchn.com%2Fbest-coffee-beans-22972918) to grind five ounces of each bean on the same medium coarse setting, and [Fellow Aiden Precision Coffee Maker](https://atmedia.link/product?url=https%3A%2F%2Ffellowproducts.com%2Fproducts%2Faiden-precision-coffee-maker&referralSource=&id=22972918&site=KT&refUrl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thekitchn.com%2Fbest-coffee-beans-22972918) to make one cup of drip coffee for each brand tested. Each cup was brewed at exactly the same temperature of 205°F. I drank and compared each one black (without any sweeteners or milk).
I took notes on each coffee I tasted and included any specific observations, tasting notes, and general opinions worth mentioning.
