SHARING A LIGHT MOMENT: Muhyiddin meeting some of the foreign teachers of the English language at SMR HR Grop. — Bernama photo KUALA LUMPUR: Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has described the ‘Seksualiti Merdeka 2011’ Programme as a deviationist activity and does not bring any benefit to the people in the country as a whole. The Deputy Prime Minister said the programme was also against the tradition, culture and religion practised by the various communities in the country. He said although Malaysia had signed the agreement on human rights, the country had its values, systems, religions and laws that were against deviationist activities such as the Seksuality Merdeka. “That’s why to me, it (the programme) is totally unsuitable and I don’t know its benefits. I don’t understand why they carry out such promotions, is there any political agenda behind it? But for Malaysians, they certainly have their own evaluation. “But to me, any activity that does not benefit the majority of Malaysians should not be carried out. It’s a waste of time, although they can say it’s their own right and freedom,” he said after delivering a speech at a gathering with English Language teachers, here yesterday. He said this when asked to comment on the organisation of the programme which began yesterday until Nov 13, which recognises the sexual rights of lesbians, bisexuals, gays and transsexuals (LBGT) in the country. Asked whether the programme should be stopped, Muhyiddin said it was up to the organisers because they had the right to organise any programme, however, the community should evaluate the positive outcome of the programme. Meanwhile, the ‘Pertubuhan Pembela-Pembela Islam’ (Pembela) in its press statement yesterday also protested against and strongly criticised the festival and the series of programmes pertaining to the LBGT which were being organised by several non-governmental organisations (NGOs), artistes and activists in the name of human rights. Its  deputy chairman, Aminuddin Yahya said the festival and such agendas had implicit designs to mobilise campaigns to change the values and moral platform of Malaysians based on the teachings of Islam as the national religion. He said Pembela rejected any attempt by the Liberal, Plural and Secular groups who were perceived to be enslaved to the globalisation agenda and wished to drag the people in this country to emulate the deviationist and disgusting lifestyle. — Bernama In Kota Baharu, PAS spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat said he was totally against the involvement of former president of the Bar Council, Datuk S. Ambiga in organising the Seksualiti Merdeka 2011 programme. As such, he called on the government to take stern action against the organisers of the programme which clearly could destroy the religious harmony in the country. “This is not right. We support Ambiga on other matters, but in this programme (Seksualiti Merdeka), I don’t support (Ambiga) because in terms of religion, we cannot support such things,” Nik Abdul Aziz, who is also Kelantan Menteri Besar, told reporters after handing over contribution to the ‘The Red Warriors’ team, here. The organising of the programme had been promoted through the website  www.seksualitimerdeka.org . In Kuala Terengganu, the Terengganu Umno Liaison Director of Strategy, Datuk Wira Rosli Mat Hassan said ‘Program Seksualiti Merdeka’ was something unacceptable not only in terms of the law, but also in terms of the country’s culture. He said the programme was actually a process to insult the national legal system as well as an insult to the Malaysian multi-racial culture. He said the programme showed as though there was a new process of assimilation to the national culture. Rosli said the programme was normal for countries such as the United States and several others. “But for us, sexuality relating to gay activities were abnormal and could not be accepted at all,” he added. — Bernama
