Mike White’s hit show is coming to the south of France – and for the first time its main setting won’t be a Four Seasons How do you create anticipation for an anthology television series when each season starts anew? Well, Mike White, the creator of The White Lotus , has clearly understood the power of a decadent hotel to whet the appetite for drama, mystery and exquisite visuals. There was feverish gossip around where seasons two and three of the now cult-status HBO show would be set and last year was no different after it was revealed that filming would be taking place in France. The White Lotus season three was filmed in Thailand, with the next instalment rumoured to be set for France Credit : HBO Given the first three series’ form, it seemed safe to narrow things down to a Four Seasons hotel but, ever keeping us on our toes, White has chosen Château de la Messardière , an Airelles property. The hotel is in Saint Tropez, long beloved of the jet set, so we can count on the usual mix of wealth and glamour. It was originally built in the 19th century by cognac merchant Gabriel Dupuy d’Angeac as a gift for his daughter Louise and her husband. In later life Louise transformed the building into a luxury hotel that became a hotspot for Parisian high society and its extravagant parties. Today, Château de la Messardière has 86 rooms and suites, a sumptuous spa by Valmont, multiple pools, a handful of restaurants (including a Cedric Grolet patisserie) and direct beach access – perfect for making quick getaways into the night. It is currently closed for winter, but filming looks set to begin in April, when it reopens. As for Four Seasons? The group will likely still feature; in season three there were, for the first time, multiple hotel filming locations and word on the ground is that filming will also take place in Paris and elsewhere in France. So which hotels might also be included? One of the hotel’s 86 rooms and suites Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat The obvious choice for a counterpart to the château is the Four Seasons is the Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat , truly deserving of the adjective “iconic”. This grand dame of the French Riviera sits atop a leafy peninsula, gazing out over the waters of the Mediterranean. The hotel opened in 1908 and has plenty of pedigree to go with all its glitter; past guests include Elizabeth Taylor, Winston Churchill and Aristotle Onassis. There’s no laurel-resting either and standards are still lofty – the property was recently awarded three Michelin Keys (the hotel equivalent of stars). It’s appeared on screen before too, including in Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie . Grand Hôtel du Cap Ferrat is a titan of the French Riviera’s hotel scene Credit : Christian Horan You might recall that fan-favourite Belinda (Natasha Rothwell), The White Lotus in Maui’s capable spa manager in season one, came into a large sum of money at the end of season three – easily enough to swap her future position from stressed employee to pampered guest. It seems likely she will return in season four, given there is still unfinished business where Greg, the shady husband of her late friend Tanya, is concerned. If she wanted to check out the hotel’s wellness facilities, she would likely be impressed. First off, there’s the fantastic Club Dauphin, with its heated saltwater swimming pool built above the rocks. Then there are the blissful outdoor spa cabanas and treatments such as an on-trend lymphatic drainage massage. Four Seasons Hotel Megève This hotel would be a wildcard and mean a ski sojourn for the cast. A decidedly French way of holidaying, after all, and a nice change of scenery from the three previous sun-and-sand settings. However, it seems unlikely to be a seasonal fit, given we have confirmation principal filming will be on the Riviera. Four Seasons Hotel Megève: a wildcard choice Credit : Richard Waite The Four Seasons Hotel Megève also offers some real high-net-worth heritage, though. The ski resort of Megève was originally developed by the Rothschild banking family as a French alternative to Switzerland’s St Moritz, and this hotel is a collaboration between Four Seasons and the Rothschilds. The resort remains one of the most expensive places to ski in the world and would offer the producers some truly breathtaking B-roll. The hotel is of a classic alpine chalet design, with a healthy dose of pine and sheepskin throughout. Dining options include Japanese restaurant Kaito – very White Lotus – and the Idéal 1850, an outdoor terrace restaurant with prime views of Mont Blanc. Four Seasons Hotel George V In Paris, there’s the Four Seasons Hotel George V . This “Palace-grade” hotel, one of just 12 in the city, is widely considered among the most impressive places to stay in France. This would be the series’ first urban romp – perhaps in the form of a glamorous weekend shopping away from the sunny South. And of course, Paris is well known as a favourite place for Americans to reinvent themselves on a European jaunt (this very concept spawned the hit Netflix show Emily in Paris , which, coincidentally, has also used all three of these hotels as filming locations). Four Seasons Hotel George V is among the most opulent places to stay in France Catnip, then, for the lost souls that constitute the White Lotus’s American guests. And there’s historic form, too. The hotel, which opened in 1928, was originally financed by an American businessman and became the go-to address for transatlantic guests arriving by ocean liner. For dinner, guests could take their pick from three-Michelin-starred La Cinq (subject of an infamous Jay Rayner review in 2017), two-starred L’Orangerie or one-starred Le George. Breakfasts take place in the sumptuous Galerie and there’s even a gorgeous Belle Epoque-inspired spa for Belinda (€560/£485 “Ritual of Life” treatment, anyone?). Expect shots of characters making getaways down the Seine, the Eiffel Tower twinkling behind an argument and a forbidden kiss in the Tuileries. Thailand felt like the spiritual home of the White Lotus concept – the show was always bound to eventually end up there. But France is a great choice for a fourth act and heading to the Riviera – the home of Tender is the Night and the Cannes Film Festival – offers the allure and mystique we’ve come to expect, with enough difference to keep viewers intrigued. Well, Mike White, the creator of [*The White Lotus*](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/tv/0/white-lotus-mindless-chattering-classes/), has clearly understood the power of a decadent hotel to whet the appetite for drama, mystery and exquisite visuals. There was feverish gossip around where seasons two and three of the now cult-status HBO show would be set and last year was no different after it was revealed that filming would be taking place in France. ![The White Lotus season three ](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/etc.clientlibs/settings/wcm/designs/telegraph/core/clientlibs/ui/dist/static/resources/images/liftIgniter-moreStories-placeholder.svg) The White Lotus season three was filmed in Thailand, with the next instalment rumoured to be set for France Credit: HBO Given the first three series’ form, it seemed safe to narrow things down to a Four Seasons hotel but, ever keeping us on our toes, White has chosen [Château de la Messardière](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/destinations/europe/france/cote-d-azur/saint-tropez/hotels/airelles-st-tropez-chateau-de-la-messardiere-hotel/), an Airelles property. The group will likely still feature; in season three there were, for the first time, [multiple hotel filming locations](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/news/white-lotus-season-three-hotels/) and word on the ground is that filming will also take place in Paris and elsewhere in France. So which hotels might also be included? ![One of the hotel's 86 rooms and suites](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/etc.clientlibs/settings/wcm/designs/telegraph/core/clientlibs/ui/dist/static/resources/images/liftIgniter-moreStories-placeholder.svg) One of the hotel’s 86 rooms and suites ## Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat The obvious choice for a counterpart to the château is the Four Seasons is the [Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/destinations/europe/france/cote-d-azur/saint-jean-cap-ferrat/hotels/grand-hotel-du-cap-ferrat-a-four-seasons-hotel/), truly deserving of the adjective “iconic”. It’s appeared on screen before too, including in *Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie*. ![Grand Hôtel du Cap Ferrat ](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/etc.clientlibs/settings/wcm/designs/telegraph/core/clientlibs/ui/dist/static/resources/images/liftIgniter-moreStories-placeholder.svg) Grand Hôtel du Cap Ferrat is a titan of the French Riviera’s hotel scene Credit: Christian Horan You might recall that fan-favourite Belinda (Natasha Rothwell), The White Lotus in Maui’s capable spa manager in season one, came into a large sum of money at the [end of season three](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/news/white-lotus-season-three-hotels/) – easily enough to swap her future position from stressed employee to pampered guest. ## Four Seasons Hotel Megève This hotel would be a wildcard and mean a ski sojourn for the cast. A decidedly French way of holidaying, after all, and a nice change of scenery from the three previous sun-and-sand settings. However, it seems unlikely to be a seasonal fit, given we have confirmation principal filming will be on the Riviera. ![Four Seasons Hotel Megève](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/etc.clientlibs/settings/wcm/designs/telegraph/core/clientlibs/ui/dist/static/resources/images/liftIgniter-moreStories-placeholder.svg) Four Seasons Hotel Megève: a wildcard choice Credit: Richard Waite The Four Seasons Hotel Megève also offers some real high-net-worth heritage, though. ## Four Seasons Hotel George V In Paris, there’s the [Four Seasons Hotel George V](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/destinations/europe/france/paris/hotels/Four-Seasons-Hotel-George-V/). This “Palace-grade” hotel, one of just 12 in the city, is widely considered among the most impressive places to stay in France. This would be the series’ first urban romp – perhaps in the form of a glamorous weekend shopping away from the sunny South. And of course, Paris is well known as a favourite place for Americans to reinvent themselves on a European jaunt (this very concept spawned the hit Netflix show *Emily in Paris*, which, coincidentally, has also [used all three of these hotels](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/destinations/europe/france/paris/do-it-yourself-emily-in-paris-tour-france-netflix/) as filming locations). ![Four Seasons Hotel George V ](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/etc.clientlibs/settings/wcm/designs/telegraph/core/clientlibs/ui/dist/static/resources/images/liftIgniter-moreStories-placeholder.svg) Four Seasons Hotel George V is among the most opulent places to stay in France Catnip, then, for the lost souls that constitute the White Lotus’s American guests. And there’s historic form, too. The hotel, which opened in 1928, was originally financed by an American businessman and became the go-to address for transatlantic guests arriving by ocean liner. For dinner, guests could take their pick from three-Michelin-starred La Cinq (subject of an infamous [Jay Rayner](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2024/11/22/jay-rayner-accuses-guardian-employing-anti-semites/) review in 2017), two-starred L’Orangerie or one-starred Le George. But France is a great choice for a fourth act and heading to the Riviera – the home of *Tender is the Night* and the Cannes Film Festival – offers the allure and mystique we’ve come to expect, with enough difference to keep viewers intrigued. *This article was first published in September 2025 and has been revised and updated.* ## Join the conversation Show 18 comments The Telegraph values your comments but kindly requests all posts are on topic, constructive and respectful. Mike White’s hit show is coming to the south of France – and for the first time its main setting won’t be a Four Seasons How do you create anticipation for an anthology television series when each season starts anew? But France is a great choice for a fourth act and heading to the Riviera – the home of *Tender is the Night* and the Cannes Film Festival – offers the allure and mystique we’ve come to expect, with enough difference to keep viewers intrigued. *This article was first published in September 2025 and has been revised and updated.*
