| Boilerpipe Text | Everything you need to know about the small-ship cruise line taking passengers on expeditions to the polar regions
Quark Expeditions made history in 1991 when it became the first cruise line to take tourists to the
North Pole
. Since then, it has become a world leader in polar expeditions. “It’s all we do,” its website says simply.
Quark has the largest expedition team in polar travel, and passengers can expect voyages that are full of adventure, learning and remarkable experiences.
Its four small ships can access remote areas in
Antarctica
and the Arctic that larger vessels can only dream of, and with passenger numbers being so low – fewer than 200 – guests have more time off ship (weather conditions permitting) than they would have if they were travelling on larger ships.
At the heart of each voyage lie opportunities to explore some of the most remarkable places on earth under the guidance of scientists, polar explorers, marine biologists and ornithologists who’ll take guests out on Zodiacs, helicopters, kayaks, paddle-boards and bikes, then lead foot across some of the most hostile and fascinating terrain on the planet.
The lucky few who book early might even have the chance to sleep beneath Arctic or Antarctic skies in overnight camps.
1. Where does Quark Expeditions cruise?
Quark Expeditions is, by its own admission, obsessed with the polar regions. It is a dedicated polar cruise operator: the North and South Poles, and the vast wildernesses of the Arctic and Antarctica are the line’s passion and its purpose. The fleet of small ships is able to access remote channels, giving passengers exceptional views and opportunities for landings and wildlife sightings.

Its Arctic destinations include the pristine wilderness of the Northwest Passage, in the Canadian High Arctic;
Greenland
and the towering icebergs and cliffs of its fjord network – the largest in the world; the
Norwegian
archipelago of Svalbard, renowned for its abundant wildlife, including walruses and polar bears, and Iceland. Known as the land of fire and ice, Iceland has spectacular glaciers, waterfalls, geysers and hot springs.
Those on an Antarctic cruise can visit South Georgia, where dramatic black-sand beaches, rugged landscapes and trails will delight hikers; the Falkland Islands, with their fascinating history and wildlife; the Antarctic Peninsula (including Snow Hill Island), home to Emperor penguins, and Patagonia. Among the highlights is the opportunity to meet members of the Mapuche community there.

2. Who does Quark Expeditions appeal to?
Adventurous travellers who value gaining knowledge and off-ship experiences above evening entertainment. Guests want to immerse themselves in the polar regions and to explore every way possible, be that on land, from the air or in the water.
Off-ship experiences include kayaking, Zodiac cruising, heli-landings, hiking and polar camping. While that might sound quite challenging – something only the young and fit should consider – this is far from so.
The vibe on board Quark ships is social, with passengers mixing with staff and expedition crew
In fact, most bookings come from well-travelled, over-50s who enjoy discovering less-visited destinations in comfort, and who appreciate that small passenger numbers and a high guide-to-guest ratio mean more time off ship.
Many passengers travel with their children and grandchildren in multi-generational groups: the minimum age is eight, but certain adventures, such as kayaking, heli-landings and polar camping, are only available to those aged over 16.

A key reason people choose Quark Expeditions is due to the expertise of the guides and lecturers. Guests want to know and understand the polar regions, so lectures covering, for example, geology, glaciology, history, photography and, above all, wildlife and nature, are extremely well-attended. The vibe on board is social, with crew and expedition staff mixing with passengers over dinner and in the bar.
3. Quark Expeditions’ fleet
Ocean Explorer (138 passengers)
Modern, elegant, and with a special bow that minimises the vibration and motion of harsh seas, Ocean Explorer is built for polar exploration. A library, hot tubs, sauna, fitness centre, restaurants and bars, including the splendid Observation Lounge, ensure time spent on board is relaxing, social and fun.
Sails to:
Antarctica, the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, Svalbard, Arctic Norway, Greenland, the Northwest Passage and Newfoundland
Stateroom cabins and suites on board Ocean Explorer are spacious and luxe
World Voyager (168 passengers)
This science vessel has a superb presentation theatre and science hub, where passengers can mingle with expedition guides and experts. Its suites are spacious, and all have balconies. World Voyager’s two Rolls-Royce hybrid engines ensure smooth and sustainable sailing.
Complementing the technical excellence are outstanding wellness amenities, including a spa, sauna, swimming pool, Jacuzzis and outdoor running track, and a restaurant and lounges for relaxation.
Sails to:
Antarctica, South Georgia
World Voyager offers an outstanding selection of wellness amenities, including a spa with a sauna
World Explorer (172 passengers)
World Explorer is known for providing adventure and luxury in equal measure. Its deluxe suites, spread over six categories, have either a French or walk-out balcony, giving all passengers great ocean views and opportunities to watch out for wildlife.
An Observation Lounge with a glass dome, library, heated outdoor pool, outdoor running track, spa and fitness centre provide ample space for relaxation and getting to know the on-board experts and fellow guests. Note, however, that World Explorer will be leaving Quark’s fleet at the end of March 2026.
Sails to:
Antarctica, South Georgia
Ultramarine comes with two helicopters and Zodiacs, to take passengers to some of the most remote terrain
Ultramarine (199 passengers)
Designed specifically for expedition cruising, Ultramarine carries two fuel-efficient helicopters to take passengers to remote destinations only reachable by air. All of its spacious suites have ocean views, and many also have balconies. It has more viewing spaces than any other expedition ship of its size.
Sails to:
Antarctica, Patagonia, Svalbard, Spitsbergen, Iceland, Greenland, Falkland Islands and South Georgia
4. Access for guests with disabilities?
Passengers are required to have a good level of mobility for these cruises. Ultramarine has lifts and some cabins for wheelchair accessibility, and bathrooms with grab rails and roll-in showers. Passengers are strongly advised to contact customer services to discuss any mobility or health issues before travelling.
5. Loyalty scheme
The Shackleton Club loyalty programme rewards members with priority bookings, exclusive events, on-board discounts, cabin upgrades when available, and more.

Quark Expeditions’ itineraries focus on exploring the Arctic and Antarctica Credit: MICHELLE SOLE

Quark Expeditions made history in 1991 when it became the first cruise line to take tourists to the [North Pole](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/destinations/europe/greenland/arctic-north-pole-cruise-holiday-guide-destinations/). Since then, it has become a world leader in polar expeditions. “It’s all we do,” its website says simply.
Quark has the largest expedition team in polar travel, and passengers can expect voyages that are full of adventure, learning and remarkable experiences.
Its four small ships can access remote areas in [Antarctica](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/destinations/antarctica/antarctica-cruise-holiday-guide-destinations-itineraries/) and the Arctic that larger vessels can only dream of, and with passenger numbers being so low – fewer than 200 – guests have more time off ship (weather conditions permitting) than they would have if they were travelling on larger ships.

Its Arctic destinations include the pristine wilderness of the Northwest Passage, in the Canadian High Arctic; [Greenland](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/cruises/best-greenland-cruises/) and the towering icebergs and cliffs of its fjord network – the largest in the world; the [Norwegian](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/cruises/best-norwegian-fjords-cruises/) archipelago of Svalbard, renowned for its abundant wildlife, including walruses and polar bears, and Iceland.
