Leave's victory here can be seen as a sign that they successfully appealed to working-class voters.\nThe North West was particularly difficult to call before the election. While the cities have high migrant populations expected to encourage Leave voters, the area also had a high university-educated population predicted to Remain.\nIn the end, the 53.7 per cent of the region backed leaving the EU.\nThe West Midlands is officially the most eurosceptic part of the UK. The area has been rocked by migration tensions in the past, but never much by European migrants.\nUkip didn't really get a foothold in the General Election so Leave will be encouraged - and perhaps surprised - that the West Midlanders so strongly voted out of the EU. \nWhether it was Project Fear or a love of the continent, London\nhas voted\n heavily to remain in the European Union in an expected result in the capital city. \nThe multicultural and international city had polled as the most europhilic part of England before the referendum. It also is home to the financial City of London, whose businesses and banks had mainly backed the perceived stability of a vote to remain.\nSome 60 per cent of Londoners backed British membership of the European Union - leaving the pro-EU capital surrounded by its Brexit-backing regional neighbours. \nYorkshire and the Humber gave one of the highest eurosceptic results in the country, with 57.7 per cent of people backing Leave.\nHull is one of Britain's best exporters to Europe, but Ukip came second in fifteen seats around the area in the 2015 election. Leave will be glad they could convert this into votes to leave the European Union.\nThe East of England has matched the polls' predictions as one of the most eurosceptic part of the UK, with almost three in five of its residents backing Brexit. \nThis region is home to MP Douglas Carswell’s constituency, Clacton, the\nonly Ukip seat in Parliament\n.\nIt contains the most deprived area in the UK, with 33 per cent youth unemployment, and locals insist that uncontrolled European immigration has caused the decline in the once popular seaside resort.\nThere was a lot of discussion about Scotland's vote before the referendum, and the results have shown that the speculation was worthwhile. Scotland has been taken out of the European Union despite its vote to remain.\nPolls\nsuggested\nthat this may well have been the case. Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland's First Minister, had previously \nstated \nthat demand for a second independence referendum could be \"unstoppable\" if taken out of the EU against its will.\nWith 62 per cent of Scottish people voting to Remain, Westminster politicians will be nervously eyeing polls above the border to monitor the demand for another referendum.\nNorthern Ireland had polled more europhilic than other other region in the UK before the election. With the results in, its Remain vote of 55.7 per cent was the third strongest in the country.\nThere are already calls for independence in response to the nation being taken out of the EU against its will. However, turnout here was the lowest seen in any part of the country - indicating how the Remain campaign failed to inspire its voters.\nWales was one of the big shocks in the results as its people backed Leave. It was expected to give Remain a slight lead, but in the end just five Welsh voting areas backed the EU.\nThe picture wasn’t completely clear before the referendum: in the recent local elections, Ukip managed to win its first seven seats in the Welsh Assembly. Deprived areas in West Wales benefit from receiving high levels of EU aid, with Wales receiving nearly £2.5bn in structural funds between 2014 and 2020.\nWhat happens next?\nNo one knows. Leave's victory here can be seen as a sign that they successfully appealed to working-class voters.\n\n[EU Ref Area North East (Leave)](https:\/\/cf-particle-html.eip.telegraph.co.uk\/60150ad6-0617-41ca-af32-390da3a7eb12.html \"EU Ref Area North East (Leave)\")\n\nThe North West was particularly difficult to call before the election. While the cities have high migrant populations expected to encourage Leave voters, the area also had a high university-educated population predicted to Remain.\n\nIn the end, the 53.7 per cent of the region backed leaving the EU.\n\n[EU Ref Area North West (Leave)](https:\/\/cf-particle-html.eip.telegraph.co.uk\/705bb0a7-88b1-4a01-937c-0babca1e3b67.html \"EU Ref Area North West (Leave)\")\n\nThe West Midlands is officially the most eurosceptic part of the UK. The area has been rocked by migration tensions in the past, but never much by European migrants.\n\nUkip didn't really get a foothold in the General Election so Leave will be encouraged - and perhaps surprised - that the West Midlanders so strongly voted out of the EU.\n\n[EU Ref Area West Midlands (Leave)](https:\/\/cf-particle-html.eip.telegraph.co.uk\/d4a00610-9525-4fdb-af56-41decafe634a.html \"EU Ref Area West Midlands (Leave)\")\n\nWhether it was Project Fear or a love of the continent, London [has voted](http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2016\/05\/26\/forget-the-eu-we-need-a-referendum-on-whether-london-should-stay\/) heavily to remain in the European Union in an expected result in the capital city.\n\nThe multicultural and international city had polled as the most europhilic part of England before the referendum. It also is home to the financial City of London, whose businesses and banks had mainly backed the perceived stability of a vote to remain.\n\nSome 60 per cent of Londoners backed British membership of the European Union - leaving the pro-EU capital surrounded by its Brexit-backing regional neighbours.\n\n[EU Ref Area London (Remain)](https:\/\/cf-particle-html.eip.telegraph.co.uk\/53de1e9f-4195-4d9c-b73e-a9834bce96c4.html \"EU Ref Area London (Remain)\")\n\nYorkshire and the Humber gave one of the highest eurosceptic results in the country, with 57.7 per cent of people backing Leave.\n\nHull is one of Britain's best exporters to Europe, but Ukip came second in fifteen seats around the area in the 2015 election. Leave will be glad they could convert this into votes to leave the European Union.\n\n[EU Ref Area Yorks (Leave)](https:\/\/cf-particle-html.eip.telegraph.co.uk\/8ee11512-e7d3-4ef6-8790-94c5c76a2583.html \"EU Ref Area Yorks (Leave)\")\n\nThe East of England has matched the polls' predictions as one of the most eurosceptic part of the UK, with almost three in five of its residents backing Brexit.\n\nThis region is home to MP Douglas Carswell’s constituency, Clacton, the [only Ukip seat in Parliament](http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/picturegalleries\/uknews\/11153961\/Douglas-Carswell-becomes-Ukips-first-elected-MP-after-Clacton-by-election-victory-in-pictures.html).\n\nIt contains the most deprived area in the UK, with 33 per cent youth unemployment, and locals insist that uncontrolled European immigration has caused the decline in the once popular seaside resort.\n\n[EU Ref Area Eastern (Leave)](https:\/\/cf-particle-html.eip.telegraph.co.uk\/352f23b1-0642-4f51-9cc2-5bdc613d5884.html \"EU Ref Area Eastern (Leave)\")\n\nThere was a lot of discussion about Scotland's vote before the referendum, and the results have shown that the speculation was worthwhile. Scotland has been taken out of the European Union despite its vote to remain.\n\nPolls [suggested](http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2016\/03\/23\/eu-referendum-poll-tracker-and-odds\/http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2016\/03\/21\/eu-referendum-who-in-britain-wants-to-leave-and-who-wants-to-rem\/) that this may well have been the case. Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland's First Minister, had previously [stated](http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/politics\/nicola-sturgeon\/11933486\/Nicola-Sturgeon-warns-second-Scottish-independence-referendum-unstoppable-if-UK-leaves-EU.html) that demand for a second independence referendum could be \"unstoppable\" if taken out of the EU against its will.\n\nWith 62 per cent of Scottish people voting to Remain, Westminster politicians will be nervously eyeing polls above the border to monitor the demand for another referendum.\n\n[EU Ref Area Scotland (Remain)](https:\/\/cf-particle-html.eip.telegraph.co.uk\/989e11be-0d7d-4446-9940-2c51b5487eb7.html \"EU Ref Area Scotland (Remain)\")\n\nNorthern Ireland had polled more europhilic than other other region in the UK before the election. With the results in, its Remain vote of 55.7 per cent was the third strongest in the country.\n\nThere are already calls for independence in response to the nation being taken out of the EU against its will. However, turnout here was the lowest seen in any part of the country - indicating how the Remain campaign failed to inspire its voters.\n\n[EU Ref Area Nothern Ireland (Remain)](https:\/\/cf-particle-html.eip.telegraph.co.uk\/cdb63de3-7570-4af4-b57a-5f594cbbfc08.html \"EU Ref Area Nothern Ireland (Remain)\")\n\nWales was one of the big shocks in the results as its people backed Leave. It was expected to give Remain a slight lead, but in the end just five Welsh voting areas backed the EU.\n\nThe picture wasn’t completely clear before the referendum: in the recent local elections, Ukip managed to win its first seven seats in the Welsh Assembly. Deprived areas in West Wales benefit from receiving high levels of EU aid, with Wales receiving nearly £2.5bn in structural funds between 2014 and 2020.\n\n[EU Ref Area Wales (Leave)](https:\/\/cf-particle-html.eip.telegraph.co.uk\/0ad1b5bc-9b3e-485a-9f59-b822ae4ede78.html \"EU Ref Area Wales (Leave)\")\n\n[Referendum regional results map](https:\/\/cf-particle-html.eip.telegraph.co.uk\/e667d977-15e8-4bfa-b696-58b415451c9e.html \"Referendum regional results map\")\n\n### What happens next?\nNo one knows. The [pound has fallen](http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2016\/06\/23\/markets-live-will-sterling-surge-or-slump-as-the-eu-referendum-c\/) as the future of the UK's economy is plunged into uncertainty. More than one in three people along the coast north of Hartlepool placed themselves in the DE social-class in the last census. Leave's victory here can be seen as a sign that they successfully appealed to working-class voters. While the cities have high migrant populations expected to encourage Leave voters, the area also had a high university-educated population predicted to Remain. In the end, the 53.7 per cent of the region backed leaving the EU. The area has been rocked by migration tensions in the past, but never much by European migrants. Ukip didn't really get a foothold in the General Election so Leave will be encouraged - and perhaps surprised - that the West Midlanders so strongly voted out of the EU. [EU Ref Area West Midlands (Leave)](https://cf-particle-html.eip.telegraph.co.uk/d4a00610-9525-4fdb-af56-41decafe634a.html "EU Ref Area West Midlands (Leave)") Whether it was Project Fear or a love of the continent, London [has voted](http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/05/26/forget-the-eu-we-need-a-referendum-on-whether-london-should-stay/) heavily to remain in the European Union in an expected result in the capital city. The multicultural and international city had polled as the most europhilic part of England before the referendum. It also is home to the financial City of London, whose businesses and banks had mainly backed the perceived stability of a vote to remain. Some 60 per cent of Londoners backed British membership of the European Union - leaving the pro-EU capital surrounded by its Brexit-backing regional neighbours. [EU Ref Area London (Remain)](https://cf-particle-html.eip.telegraph.co.uk/53de1e9f-4195-4d9c-b73e-a9834bce96c4.html "EU Ref Area London (Remain)") Yorkshire and the Humber gave one of the highest eurosceptic results in the country, with 57.7 per cent of people backing Leave. Hull is one of Britain's best exporters to Europe, but Ukip came second in fifteen seats around the area in the 2015 election. Leave will be glad they could convert this into votes to leave the European Union. [EU Ref Area Yorks (Leave)](https://cf-particle-html.eip.telegraph.co.uk/8ee11512-e7d3-4ef6-8790-94c5c76a2583.html "EU Ref Area Yorks (Leave)") The East of England has matched the polls' predictions as one of the most eurosceptic part of the UK, with almost three in five of its residents backing Brexit. This region is home to MP Douglas Carswell’s constituency, Clacton, the [only Ukip seat in Parliament](http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/picturegalleries/uknews/11153961/Douglas-Carswell-becomes-Ukips-first-elected-MP-after-Clacton-by-election-victory-in-pictures.html). It contains the most deprived area in the UK, with 33 per cent youth unemployment, and locals insist that uncontrolled European immigration has caused the decline in the once popular seaside resort. [EU Ref Area Eastern (Leave)](https://cf-particle-html.eip.telegraph.co.uk/352f23b1-0642-4f51-9cc2-5bdc613d5884.html "EU Ref Area Eastern (Leave)") There was a lot of discussion about Scotland's vote before the referendum, and the results have shown that the speculation was worthwhile. Scotland has been taken out of the European Union despite its vote to remain. Polls [suggested](http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/03/23/eu-referendum-poll-tracker-and-odds/http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/03/21/eu-referendum-who-in-britain-wants-to-leave-and-who-wants-to-rem/) that this may well have been the case. Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland's First Minister, had previously [stated](http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/nicola-sturgeon/11933486/Nicola-Sturgeon-warns-second-Scottish-independence-referendum-unstoppable-if-UK-leaves-EU.html) that demand for a second independence referendum could be "unstoppable" if taken out of the EU against its will. With 62 per cent of Scottish people voting to Remain, Westminster politicians will be nervously eyeing polls above the border to monitor the demand for another referendum. [EU Ref Area Scotland (Remain)](https://cf-particle-html.eip.telegraph.co.uk/989e11be-0d7d-4446-9940-2c51b5487eb7.html "EU Ref Area Scotland (Remain)") Northern Ireland had polled more europhilic than other other region in the UK before the election. With the results in, its Remain vote of 55.7 per cent was the third strongest in the country. There are already calls for independence in response to the nation being taken out of the EU against its will. However, turnout here was the lowest seen in any part of the country - indicating how the Remain campaign failed to inspire its voters. [EU Ref Area Nothern Ireland (Remain)](https://cf-particle-html.eip.telegraph.co.uk/cdb63de3-7570-4af4-b57a-5f594cbbfc08.html "EU Ref Area Nothern Ireland (Remain)") Wales was one of the big shocks in the results as its people backed Leave. It was expected to give Remain a slight lead, but in the end just five Welsh voting areas backed the EU. The picture wasn’t completely clear before the referendum: in the recent local elections, Ukip managed to win its first seven seats in the Welsh Assembly. Deprived areas in West Wales benefit from receiving high levels of EU aid, with Wales receiving nearly £2.5bn in structural funds between 2014 and 2020. How each of the 382 counting areas voted ### How the 12 regions of the UK have voted The large Brexit votes in the North of England were the first sign of things to come in the EU referendum - 58 per cent of the North East backed leaving the EU in the end. More than one in three people along the coast north of Hartlepool placed themselves in the DE social-class in the last census. Leave's victory here can be seen as a sign that they successfully appealed to working-class voters. The North West was particularly difficult to call before the election. While the cities have high migrant populations expected to encourage Leave voters, the area also had a high university-educated population predicted to Remain. In the end, the 53.7 per cent of the region backed leaving the EU. The West Midlands is officially the most eurosceptic part of the UK. The area has been rocked by migration tensions in the past, but never much by European migrants. Ukip didn't really get a foothold in the General Election so Leave will be encouraged - and perhaps surprised - that the West Midlanders so strongly voted out of the EU. Whether it was Project Fear or a love of the continent, London [has voted](http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/05/26/forget-the-eu-we-need-a-referendum-on-whether-london-should-stay/) heavily to remain in the European Union in an expected result in the capital city. The multicultural and international city had polled as the most europhilic part of England before the referendum. It also is home to the financial City of London, whose businesses and banks had mainly backed the perceived stability of a vote to remain. Some 60 per cent of Londoners backed British membership of the European Union - leaving the pro-EU capital surrounded by its Brexit-backing regional neighbours. Yorkshire and the Humber gave one of the highest eurosceptic results in the country, with 57.7 per cent of people backing Leave. Hull is one of Britain's best exporters to Europe, but Ukip came second in fifteen seats around the area in the 2015 election. Leave will be glad they could convert this into votes to leave the European Union. The East of England has matched the polls' predictions as one of the most eurosceptic part of the UK, with almost three in five of its residents backing Brexit. This region is home to MP Douglas Carswell’s constituency, Clacton, the [only Ukip seat in Parliament](http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/picturegalleries/uknews/11153961/Douglas-Carswell-becomes-Ukips-first-elected-MP-after-Clacton-by-election-victory-in-pictures.html). It contains the most deprived area in the UK, with 33 per cent youth unemployment, and locals insist that uncontrolled European immigration has caused the decline in the once popular seaside resort. There was a lot of discussion about Scotland's vote before the referendum, and the results have shown that the speculation was worthwhile. Scotland has been taken out of the European Union despite its vote to remain. Polls [suggested](http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/03/23/eu-referendum-poll-tracker-and-odds/http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/03/21/eu-referendum-who-in-britain-wants-to-leave-and-who-wants-to-rem/) that this may well have been the case. Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland's First Minister, had previously [stated](http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/nicola-sturgeon/11933486/Nicola-Sturgeon-warns-second-Scottish-independence-referendum-unstoppable-if-UK-leaves-EU.html) that demand for a second independence referendum could be "unstoppable" if taken out of the EU against its will. With 62 per cent of Scottish people voting to Remain, Westminster politicians will be nervously eyeing polls above the border to monitor the demand for another referendum. Northern Ireland had polled more europhilic than other other region in the UK before the election. With the results in, its Remain vote of 55.7 per cent was the third strongest in the country. There are already calls for independence in response to the nation being taken out of the EU against its will. However, turnout here was the lowest seen in any part of the country - indicating how the Remain campaign failed to inspire its voters. Wales was one of the big shocks in the results as its people backed Leave. It was expected to give Remain a slight lead, but in the end just five Welsh voting areas backed the EU. The picture wasn’t completely clear before the referendum: in the recent local elections, Ukip managed to win its first seven seats in the Welsh Assembly. Deprived areas in West Wales benefit from receiving high levels of EU aid, with Wales receiving nearly £2.5bn in structural funds between 2014 and 2020. ### What happens next? No one knows. The [pound has fallen](http://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2016/06/23/markets-live-will-sterling-surge-or-slump-as-the-eu-referendum-c/) as the future of the UK's economy is plunged into uncertainty. David Cameron has announced that he will stand down as Prime Minister by October. Boris Johnson, seen as the likely next Prime Minister, has insisted that the UK will ["always be" part of Europe](http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/06/26/i-cannot-stress-too-much-that-britain-is-part-of-europe--and-alw/).
