This is called Rangoli or Kolam and is a traditional decoration that is typically made with ground rice powder or rice grains. These decorations are usually elaborate and feature geometrical patterns, different colours and sweeping patterns. This is typically done to welcome the goddess of wealth and good luck, Lakshmi, into the home. As you can imagine, it also takes a lot of skill. Thankfully, this year, the Malaysian Association in Singapore will be running a Rangoli workshop with creative artist and designer Sudharavi who is in the Singapore Book of Records for creating a Rangoli for Singapore’s 53rd National Day.
