I clean my outside windows
maybe
once a year. Itâs definitely
not
my favorite chore. Our house is behind a large farming field, so during their harvest time, paired with the pollen in Alabama, sometimes I just have to get out there and clean the windows; or look at them dirty.
Which isnât really an option very long, I like a clear view.
So, when I need to get outside to clean the windows, I use this no fail, super easy, Streak Free Window Cleaning Recipe. It really takes no time at all. The hardest part is dragging out the hose.
Read on to see how I clean my outside windows, in under 1 hour, using just 3 easy products that I know you already have in your kitchen.
So easy a 5 year old can do it!
What youâll need
Youâll need 5 things:
A bucket
â Iâm using a 3 gallon bucket, fill it with at least 2 gallons of water
2 cups
White Vinegar
â Apple cider vinegar will work in a pinch, but white vinegar is best to use
2 tablespoons
Dawn degreasing liquid dish soap
A foam mop- I get these from the Dollar Tree for $1.25, donât splurge on this, the cheap foam brush head works perfect!
Hot water
How to clean the windows
First
, youâll want to remove the screens in your windows, if you have them. We removed our screens for a hurricane 4 years ago and never put them back, so I can skip this step.
If youâd like to clean your screens, just use the same soapy water that you will use for the windows. Wash and rinse very well, then lean against the house to completely dry before returning them.
Next
, fill the bucket with your cleaners.
Streak Free Window Cleaning Recipe:
The ratio is 2-2-2
To your bucket pour in 2 cups of white vinegar, 2 tablespoons of Dawn and fill with at least 2 gallons of hot water (or more). Thatâs it! So simple!
Now itâs time to clean.
If you have kids, this is a good activity to keep them busy for a little while, which is why my 5 year is helping me. He has so much fun with the hose.
Once outside, use your hose to spray off the window and loosen any dirt.
Then
, dip your foam sponge into the cleaning water and get it nice and wet. Clean the windows thoroughly with the mop, dunking it back into the cleaning water as needed.
Once the window has been cleaned well, rinse with the hose.
Thatâs all there is to it!
No need to dry, the vinegar in the water will help your windows to dry streak free!
Hereâs the before:
And the after!
No drying! Ta-da!
Continue this process on all of your windows and enjoy your view in no time at all. This works great on car windows, as well. I even clean my shutters and front door while Iâm out there.
Make sure to rinse each window really well to get rid of any leftover soapâotherwise, you might end up with streaks or spots. Itâs best to wash and rinse one window at a time so the soap doesnât dry before you can get to it.
The long mop pole is great to reach higher windows.
FAQâs
Is the cleaning solution bad for plants?
Vinegar is used a weed killer, so itâs actually great if you have weeds. If you have planter boxes on your windows or flowers directly under your windows, I suggest removing the planter boxes if possible before cleaning.
The vinegar/Dawn/water solution might be harmful to some plants or flowers, so use your discretion.
What time of day is best to clean?
Unless you have an issue with very hard water, any time of day is good. If you have water with a lot of minerals, stick to cleaning early in the morning or evening when the sun is not fully out. If you have very hard water/ lots of mineral deposits avoid cleaning when itâs very hot or very sunny because the soap residue will dry too fast before youâve had a chance to rinse it off.
What if I have really hard water?
If you have very hard water and a lot of mineral deposits in your water, chances are you normally see white spots when the water dries on your windows. The vinegar in the cleaning solution will help to eliminate those hard water marks.
I live in Alabama, our water hardness is right about in the middle of the scale, with it being more towards the soft side. I donât have any issues with water spots on my windows after cleaning them and letting them air dry.
If you are still seeing spots on your windows after following the directions above, here are a couple of things you can try:
Add 1 tablespoon of
Jet-Dry Rinse Aid
to your cleaning solution
Add 2 tablespoons of
Isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol
to your cleaning water
Use a
squeegee
to dry the windows
What is Dawn?
Dawn
is a degreasing liquid dish soap. You do not have to use Dawn specifically, as long as the soap is a degreaser. If you live outside of the United States,
Fairy
is the equivalent to Dawn.
Do I have to use hot water in the bucket?
No, hot water is not necessary. It does help to loosen and remove dirt better, but if you want to use cold water from the hose, thatâs just fine.
How do I clean my screens?
To clean your screens, rinse them with water and use the cleaning liquid to wash the screens- after youâre finished cleaning your windows. Set them in the sun to dry and replace once dry.
What about the inside windows?
I love
Sprayway
for all glass and mirrors. Itâs incredible! Use crumbled newspaper instead of paper towels to get a lint free result.
Iâm seeing streaks or spots. What happened?
Soap Residue:
If the soap isnât fully rinsed off, it can dry on the glass and leave behind a filmy, streaky residue.
Hard Water:
If you rinse your windows with very hard water (water that has a lot of minerals like calcium and magnesium), it can leave white spots as it dries. If this is the case use a squeegee to dry the windows.
Dirty Water:
Using a dirty soapy rinse bucket can actually redeposit grime back onto the window, causing streaks. If your water becomes very dirty, refill your bucket with a fresh batch of window cleaning water.
Drying Too Slowly or Too Fast:
On hot or sunny days, the soap and water can dry too quickly on the window before you rinse it off, leading to visible spots or streaky marks.
Using the Wrong Mop:
Avoid using paper to clean. I prefer the foam mops. Paper towels or regular towels can leave lint or fibers behind, making windows look streaky or cloudy.
How to avoid streaks and spots
Rinse Immediately:
Wash and rinse one window at a time to keep soap from drying on the glass.
Use Clean, Soft Water:
If your tap water is hard, try rinsing with distilled water for a final passâor at least avoid letting hard water sit too long on the glass. Use a squeegee to dry instead of letting the windows air-dry.
Work in the Shade:
Try to wash windows on a cloudy day or when the sun isnât shining directly on them to keep everything from drying too fast.
Change Your Water Frequently:
Swap out dirty, soapy water for fresh clean water if it starts looking cloudy.
If youâve been putting off cleaning your outside windows, I hope this post was helpful! If it was, please share it on social media!
Follow these tips and youâll have beautiful, sparkling, streak free windows in no time!

Any additional advice on cleaning windows that have âspotsâ and cannot get them off. Windows still looks very spotted and horrible. We had new windows installed 5 years ago. Our pest control guy came three years ago and sprayed our house and WINDOWS and ever since the windows are so stained with nasty like water spots. We have found nothing that will remove the spots. And now I think only a miracle work remove the nasty spots..
Thank you\!

Follow directions to a tee and added the Jet Dry to try to eliminate spots but still ended up with white spots đ˘
Next time Iâll try the Squeegee and hopefully that will help get rid of them. For this year Iâll just deal with spots b/c with 18 windows I just canât do it again right away. I do think this can work, I just will have to take the extra step đ¤ˇđźââď¸

Iâm so sorry that happened! Do you have mineral deposited water or very hard water? That could be the cause. Next time the squeegee would work, or use distilled water to rinse. Sometimes if the windows arenât rinsed completely, thereâs spotty residue left behind as well. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the recipe! It worked great except for some of my windows that had not been cleaned in five years and get sprayed with the lawn irrigation. Those windows had a scale of white spots that wouldnât come off. I had to use generous ammonia cleaner like Windex and that got the white âscaleâ off. I started by cleaning with your solution to clean off the dirt, rinsed, then used the Windex, then followed with your solution again, rinsed, squeegee. Worked beautifully\!

I wish there was a way to clean the outside windows when they have sunscreens installed.
It would really be a huge chore to have to remove all the screws to remove them and then get them back on again. Not a job for 1 person. So due to this my windows do not get cleaned. I sometimes just take a hose and spray them and let them dry.
Then I also have windows on the back of my house that have regular screens but of course they cannot be removed either.
What a dilemma\!

This is absolutely the best solution I have used to clean my windows! I have somewhat hard well water and didnât have any issues with the water, vinegar and Dawn solution! I did use Norwex window cloths to apply the solution, then a squeegee and rubbed them dry with another Norwex cloth and had little or no streaks! This certainly got a â¤ď¸ in my Pinterest account\!

This easy solution is a game changer.
I had a film on the windows from the gutters and was not able to get it off with anything else. This solution took it off 1st time.
Hallelujah!!\!

I clean my outside windows *maybe* once a year. Itâs definitely **not** my favorite chore.

So easy a 5 year old can do it\!
## What youâll need
Youâll need 5 things:

- [A bucket](https://linksta.io/e92f94f4/wp)â Iâm using a 3 gallon bucket, fill it with at least 2 gallons of water
- 2 cups [White Vinegar](https://linksta.io/53df72e7/wp)â Apple cider vinegar will work in a pinch, but white vinegar is best to use
- 2 tablespoons [Dawn degreasing liquid dish soap](https://linksta.io/0a433497/wp)
- A foam mop- I get these from the Dollar Tree for \$1.25, donât splurge on this, the cheap foam brush head works perfect\!
- Hot water
## How to clean the windows
**First**, youâll want to remove the screens in your windows, if you have them. We removed our screens for a hurricane 4 years ago and never put them back, so I can skip this step.
If youâd like to clean your screens, just use the same soapy water that you will use for the windows. Wash and rinse very well, then lean against the house to completely dry before returning them.

**Next**, fill the bucket with your cleaners.
Streak Free Window Cleaning Recipe: **The ratio is 2-2-2**
To your bucket pour in 2 cups of white vinegar, 2 tablespoons of Dawn and fill with at least 2 gallons of hot water (or more). Thatâs it! So simple\!

**Now itâs time to clean.** If you have kids, this is a good activity to keep them busy for a little while, which is why my 5 year is helping me. He has so much fun with the hose.
Once outside, use your hose to spray off the window and loosen any dirt.

**Then**, dip your foam sponge into the cleaning water and get it nice and wet. Clean the windows thoroughly with the mop, dunking it back into the cleaning water as needed.

Once the window has been cleaned well, rinse with the hose.
**Thatâs all there is to it\!** No need to dry, the vinegar in the water will help your windows to dry streak free\!
**Hereâs the before:**

**And the after\!** No drying! Ta-da\!

## FAQâs
## Is the cleaning solution bad for plants?
Vinegar is used a weed killer, so itâs actually great if you have weeds. If you have planter boxes on your windows or flowers directly under your windows, I suggest removing the planter boxes if possible before cleaning.
The vinegar/Dawn/water solution might be harmful to some plants or flowers, so use your discretion.
## What time of day is best to clean?
Unless you have an issue with very hard water, any time of day is good. If you have water with a lot of minerals, stick to cleaning early in the morning or evening when the sun is not fully out. If you have very hard water/ lots of mineral deposits avoid cleaning when itâs very hot or very sunny because the soap residue will dry too fast before youâve had a chance to rinse it off.
## What if I have really hard water?
If you have very hard water and a lot of mineral deposits in your water, chances are you normally see white spots when the water dries on your windows. The vinegar in the cleaning solution will help to eliminate those hard water marks.
I live in Alabama, our water hardness is right about in the middle of the scale, with it being more towards the soft side. I donât have any issues with water spots on my windows after cleaning them and letting them air dry.
If you are still seeing spots on your windows after following the directions above, here are a couple of things you can try:
- Add 1 tablespoon of [Jet-Dry Rinse Aid](https://linksta.io/d3c74729/wp) to your cleaning solution
- Add 2 tablespoons of [Isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol](https://linksta.io/0db25e1b/wp) to your cleaning water
- Use a [squeegee](https://linksta.io/635cde58/wp) to dry the windows
## What is Dawn?
[Dawn](https://linksta.io/0a433497/wp) is a degreasing liquid dish soap. You do not have to use Dawn specifically, as long as the soap is a degreaser. If you live outside of the United States, [Fairy](https://linksta.io/fed73f4a/wp) is the equivalent to Dawn.
## Do I have to use hot water in the bucket?
No, hot water is not necessary. It does help to loosen and remove dirt better, but if you want to use cold water from the hose, thatâs just fine.
## How do I clean my screens?
To clean your screens, rinse them with water and use the cleaning liquid to wash the screens- after youâre finished cleaning your windows. Set them in the sun to dry and replace once dry.
## What about the inside windows?
I love [Sprayway](https://linksta.io/daf284d5/wp) for all glass and mirrors. Itâs incredible! Use crumbled newspaper instead of paper towels to get a lint free result.
## Iâm seeing streaks or spots. What happened?
- **Soap Residue:** If the soap isnât fully rinsed off, it can dry on the glass and leave behind a filmy, streaky residue.
- **Hard Water:** If you rinse your windows with very hard water (water that has a lot of minerals like calcium and magnesium), it can leave white spots as it dries. If this is the case use a squeegee to dry the windows.
- **Dirty Water:** Using a dirty soapy rinse bucket can actually redeposit grime back onto the window, causing streaks. If your water becomes very dirty, refill your bucket with a fresh batch of window cleaning water.
- **Drying Too Slowly or Too Fast:** On hot or sunny days, the soap and water can dry too quickly on the window before you rinse it off, leading to visible spots or streaky marks.
- **Using the Wrong Mop:** Avoid using paper to clean. I prefer the foam mops. Paper towels or regular towels can leave lint or fibers behind, making windows look streaky or cloudy.
## How to avoid streaks and spots
- **Rinse Immediately:**
Wash and rinse one window at a time to keep soap from drying on the glass.
- **Use Clean, Soft Water:**
If your tap water is hard, try rinsing with distilled water for a final passâor at least avoid letting hard water sit too long on the glass. Use a squeegee to dry instead of letting the windows air-dry.
- **Work in the Shade:**
Try to wash windows on a cloudy day or when the sun isnât shining directly on them to keep everything from drying too fast.
- **Change Your Water Frequently:**
Swap out dirty, soapy water for fresh clean water if it starts looking cloudy.
