A hard-hat preview of Lego Galaxy, which is scheduled to open at Legoland California in Carlsbad, Calif., on March 6, 2026.  Courtesy of Legoland California Legoland is about to launch into outer space. In March, the Carlsbad theme park is set to debut its new land, Lego Galaxy, and with it the most intense roller coaster the park has ever built.  “LEGO Galaxy is the Resort’s next bold venture, completely inspired by the passions and evolving interests of our guests,” Kurt Stocks, the president of Legoland California Resort, said in a statement shared with SFGATE. “Our Merlin Magic Making team and engineers have spent more than three years delivering an experience powered by creativity, advanced ride systems and innovation.” Article continues below this ad Lego Galaxy is scheduled to open on March 6. The expansion is  part of a $90 million investment that Merlin Entertainments, its parent company, is making in its California and Florida parks.  “Both Merlin and Lego feel really strongly in space as a passion point for kids,” Rosie Brailsford, the creative director for all the Legoland parks worldwide, told SFGATE at a preview event in January at Legoland California. “We know kids love space, it’s all about the wonder of space. We know some of them love aliens, some of them love the vehicles, some of them just love the possibility. So we’ve tried to bring a touch of that into everything that we’ve done with the area’s development.” Galacticoaster at Legoland California in Carlsbad, Calif., is housed in Spaceport 886; the name of the show building is a nod to one of the classic Lego space sets. Courtesy of Legoland California Galacticoaster, an indoor dark ride that will be the marquee attraction of Lego Galaxy, is the first coaster that Legoland California has added in 20 years. The attraction is a massive leap forward in the park’s technology and storytelling. It will also be, by far, its scariest and most exciting ride.  Article continues below this ad SF Gate Logo Make SFGATE a preferred source so your search results prioritize writing by actual people, not AI. Add Preferred Source As guests enter the show building, they meet Biff Dipper, a hero and astronaut from the Legoverse who tells riders their mission. “There’s an Asteroid of Probable Destruction that’s coming,” Tom Storer, a senior project manager for Merlin Magic Making, said at the event, adding that it’s their job to save the planet. Dipper is the first-ever animatronic in Legoland, and the character appears throughout the ride. Storer added that there are Easter eggs and inside jokes on the ride for the biggest Lego fans: Brick separators, the little tools that come in complex sets to help people get the tricky Lego bricks apart, are part of what helps dismantle the Asteroid of Probable Destruction. “It’s the first time we’ve ever been able to incorporate a brick separator into the story, into the adventure,” he said. Article continues below this ad Biff Dipper, the hero of the Galacticoaster storyline, will be the park’s first-ever animatronic figure. Courtesy of Legoland California Legoland is a park primarily aimed at kids ages 12 and under. The more thrilling rides in the park are internally called “pink knuckle” attractions because they’re approachable while still getting a little adrenaline pumping.  Galacticoaster will be the pinkest of those pink knuckle rides, reaching speeds of up to 40 mph on a twisting indoor track. (For context, Disneyland’s Space Mountain only hits around 28 mph, and the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad maxes out at around 35 mph.) Legoland California’s other two coasters are the Dragon, which tops out at around 30 mph, and Coastersaurus, which hits around 32 mph. Each Galacticoaster ride car seats four people side by side and has speakers built into the seats for an immersive sound experience.  Before guests board the ride, they have the opportunity to design the look of the spacecraft they’ll be flying in at video kiosks in a preboarding area. Between all the options, there are 625 possible combinations, “meaning guests would need to ride it every day for nearly two years to experience them all,” according to Stocks. Article continues below this ad In addition to Galacticoaster, there will be two additional rides in Lego Galaxy. The G-Force Test Facility is “very much a spinning thing,” Brailsford said, with “up and down and rotation that mimics G-Force for our space cadets to train.” Duplo Launch and Land is a milder version of that same ride for younger kids.  Lego space characters, seen here ready for installation, will be sprinkled throughout Lego Galaxy at Legoland California in Carlsbad, Calif. Courtesy of Legoland California Though the park hasn’t opened a thrill ride in two decades, it has added other attractions in that time. Legoland opened its last land, Lego Movie World, in May 2021, but it was a retheme of an existing land. Lego Galaxy is a completely new build and took four years to develop. In addition to the three new rides, the land will include play areas, dining and retail. U.F.O., which stands for “Ultimate Food Outlet,” will serve dishes like “nebula noodles”;  guests will be able to order their food from self-service stations themed to different Lego space characters, like the alien Beetlezoid. Rocket Assembly Bay is an area for kids to build their own Lego spacecraft. “We want to get hands on with the bricks,” Brailsford said. “That’s so important at Legoland.” Throughout the land, there are huge spaceship models built of Lego bricks, including more classic models as well as more modern ones, plus astronauts, aliens and other space creatures. The whole experience is inspired by the fandom: Space sets are some of the earliest and most beloved among fans of Lego bricks. The first space-themed kit, the 801 Space Rocket, launched in 1964, and the iconic red and white astronauts still recognizable today debuted in 1978. Throughout the land, there are classic spaceman and alien figures from sets that parents would have played with, as well as more recent figures that kids will recognize.  Article continues below this ad “If you’re a parent and you’ve loved Lego since you were a kid, you’re going to recognize that,” Brailsford said. “But Lego has rereleased ... some of the classic sets, so we see even now some of the younger generations loving those sets as well.”  “We want to appeal to the whole family,” she added. The G-Force Test Facility is “very much a spinning thing,” Brailsford said, with “up and down and rotation that mimics G-Force for our space cadets to train.” Duplo Launch and Land is a milder version of that same ride for younger kids. ![Lego space characters, seen here ready for installation, will be sprinkled throughout Lego Galaxy at Legoland California in Carlsbad, Calif.]() Lego space characters, seen here ready for installation, will be sprinkled throughout Lego Galaxy at Legoland California in Carlsbad, Calif. “That’s so important at Legoland.” [![Join the SFGATE National Parks WhatsApp group](https://s.hdnux.com/photos/01/65/52/05/30843237/5/rawImage.jpg)](https://www.whatsapp.com/channel/0029VbC2tEdL7UVWXzUtGX06) Throughout the land, there are huge spaceship models built of Lego bricks, including more classic models as well as more modern ones, plus astronauts, aliens and other space creatures.
