In upscale Wine Country destination St. Helena, where city ordinance has long kept out chain restaurants, locals will soon say goodbye to the city’s decades-old A&W burger franchise.
The restaurant at 501 Main St. announced on Monday that it will shut down on March 31. Former St. Helena mayor Lowell Smith and his wife, Marjorie, opened the
A&W
drive-thru in 1966, predating the city’s restrictions on chain businesses, which took effect in 1994. For generations, it has drawn in customers with its double-patty “Papa” cheeseburgers and root beer served in iced mugs.
“We are sincerely grateful for the loyalty and support the community has shown over the last six decades,” a message from the company reads. The restaurant site went up for sale last year, according to the
St. Helena Star
. A&W is the only drive-thru in St. Helena, according to the real estate listing, which describes it as a redevelopment opportunity in “a market defined by high barriers to entry, exceptional affluence, and year-round tourism.”

St. Helena’s A&W has remained a casual lunch stop in an increasingly ritzy tourist destination. It’s especially popular among St. Helena High School students, as the campus is just down the street. From 2004 through 2013 it operated as a joint A&W and KFC. (Both chains were once owned by parent company Yum Brands.)
A&W is one of Northern California’s
homegrown fast food brands
. The
company’s website
states founder Roy Allen first served his cold root beer from a roadstand in Lodi in 1919, later joined by business partner Frank Wright. A&W began franchising in 1926, and now operates in 37 states.
The closure will leave Bay Area burger favorite Gott’s Roadside as the only chain restaurant in St. Helena. This is Gott’s original location, which opened in the former longtime Taylor’s Refresher in 1999. |
