As student needs continue to evolve, professional learning opportunities help counselors stay current on effective practices and strengthen the systems that support student success. This March, more than 300 counselors from across California gathered for the [2026 Counselor Spring Institute](https:\/\/www.scoe.net\/news\/?capostid=131881), a two‑day conference designed to inspire, motivate, and rejuvenate the profession.\n\nHosted by the Sacramento County Office of Education ([SCOE](https:\/\/www.scoe.net\/)) [College and Career Readiness Initiatives](https:\/\/www.scoe.net\/programs\/Academic-Instructional-Support\/College--Career-Readiness\/index.html) in partnership with California State University, Sacramento ([CSUS](https:\/\/www.csus.edu\/)), the institute brought PK–14 counselors and support professionals together for two full days of learning and collaboration. Held on the CSUS campus, the event offered a welcoming space for counselors to reflect on their work, build community, and return to their schools with new tools and renewed energy.\n\n“The Counselor Spring Institute strengthens the systems that support student success by investing directly in the professionals who guide students every day,” said Chris Aland, Director of the Counseling Network at the Sacramento County Office of Education. “When counselors have access to high‑quality professional learning, students benefit.”\n\nSessions and activities were organized around four focus areas: Connect, Advocate, Relate, and Educate. These areas encouraged counselors to connect to strengthen the profession, advocate for students, relate and collaborate for shared support, and educate themselves to continue developing their skills. Lyndsay Morris, M.Ed., founder and CEO of Generation Wellness, shared strategies for creating supportive school environments that promote resilience and belonging. Terri Tchorzynski, Co-Founder & Managing Director of Ignited Consulting and the 2017 National School Counselor of the Year, offered insights on data‑driven counseling practices and effective systems of support.\n\nIn addition to the keynotes, attendees participated in breakout sessions led by regional and statewide experts. Proposals are due May 6, 2026.\n\nThe summit will feature nearly 200 interactive sessions designed to share real‑world strategies, lessons learned, and tools that support sustainable Community Schools implementation. Sessions should offer practical, replicable approaches that help schools strengthen relationships, align resources, and support the whole child.\n\nThe summit’s purpose is to celebrate California’s progress, strengthen statewide coherence, and deepen commitments to equity and community‑anchored practices. Presenters may focus on powerful teaching and learning, restorative culture and climate, student well‑being and integrated supports, expanded learning opportunities, college and career readiness, or authentic family partnerships.\n\nTeams from schools, districts, county offices, community‑based organizations, higher education institutions, and state agencies are invited to apply. These experts often work behind the scenes as they provide administrative, technical, and operational support—frequently with years of knowledge and experience.\n\nThe Sacramento County Office of Education ([SCOE](https:\/\/www.scoe.net\/)) conducts an annual [Classified School Employees of the Year](https:\/\/www.scoe.net\/About\/County-School-Employee-Awards\/SCOE-Classified-Employee-of-the-Year-Program\/index.html) program to pay tribute to the efforts of SCOE’s outstanding classified staff working in non-certificated, non-management roles. At a lunch reception held at SCOE’s David P. Meaney Education Center on March 20, [Sacramento County Superintendent of Schools](https:\/\/www.scoe.net\/About\/Organization--Leadership\/County-Superintendent\/index.html) David W. Gordon and Deputy Superintendent Nancy Herota, Ed.D., congratulated the five staff nominees. They acknowledged the nominees’ exemplary performance and their many contributions to the success of SCOE programs and special projects.\n\n## **2026 Winner Announced**\nLast Friday, Superintendent Gordon made a surprise visit to El Centro Jr.\/Sr. High School (located inside the Sacramento County Youth Detention Facility) to announce that **Teagan Hackbarth** had been selected as this year’s SCOE Classified School Employee of the Year. Hackbarth, a Transition Specialist, connects young people to career opportunities and reinforces the power of second chances. She created the ROADS Program (which focuses on career exploration, résumé development, and training pathways) to equip students with practical tools for future success beyond incarceration.\n\nThe Board of Education will formally recognize SCOE’s 2026 Classified School Employee of the Year at an upcoming meeting.\n\nSCOE’s classified staff are represented by the California School Employees Association ([CSEA Chapter 480](https:\/\/csea.com\/chapters\/480)).\n\n## **Competition Details**\nProfessionals from up to nine occupational specialties are nominated by SCOE leadership to compete. Nominees complete applications, which are scored by the Superintendent’s Cabinet. As student needs continue to evolve, professional learning opportunities help counselors stay current on effective practices and strengthen the systems that support student success. This March, more than 300 counselors from across California gathered for the [2026 Counselor Spring Institute](https://www.scoe.net/news/?capostid=131881), a two‑day conference designed to inspire, motivate, and rejuvenate the profession. Held on the CSUS campus, the event offered a welcoming space for counselors to reflect on their work, build community, and return to their schools with new tools and renewed energy. “The Counselor Spring Institute strengthens the systems that support student success by investing directly in the professionals who guide students every day,” said Chris Aland, Director of the Counseling Network at the Sacramento County Office of Education. “When counselors have access to high‑quality professional learning, students benefit.” Sessions and activities were organized around four focus areas: Connect, Advocate, Relate, and Educate. These experts often work behind the scenes as they provide administrative, technical, and operational support—frequently with years of knowledge and experience. The Sacramento County Office of Education ([SCOE](https://www.scoe.net/)) conducts an annual [Classified School Employees of the Year](https://www.scoe.net/About/County-School-Employee-Awards/SCOE-Classified-Employee-of-the-Year-Program/index.html) program to pay tribute to the efforts of SCOE’s outstanding classified staff working in non-certificated, non-management roles. At a lunch reception held at SCOE’s David P. Meaney Education Center on March 20, [Sacramento County Superintendent of Schools](https://www.scoe.net/About/Organization--Leadership/County-Superintendent/index.html) David W. Gordon and Deputy Superintendent Nancy Herota, Ed.D., congratulated the five staff nominees. They acknowledged the nominees’ exemplary performance and their many contributions to the success of SCOE programs and special projects. ## 2026 Winner Announced Last Friday, Superintendent Gordon made a surprise visit to El Centro Jr./Sr. High School (located inside the Sacramento County Youth Detention Facility) to announce that Teagan Hackbarth had been selected as this year’s SCOE Classified School Employee of the Year. Hackbarth, a Transition Specialist, connects young people to career opportunities and reinforces the power of second chances. She created the ROADS Program (which focuses on career exploration, résumé development, and training pathways) to equip students with practical tools for future success beyond incarceration. The Board of Education will formally recognize SCOE’s 2026 Classified School Employee of the Year at an upcoming meeting. SCOE’s classified staff are represented by the California School Employees Association ([CSEA Chapter 480](https://csea.com/chapters/480)). ## Competition Details Professionals from up to nine occupational specialties are nominated by SCOE leadership to compete. Nominees complete applications, which are scored by the Superintendent’s Cabinet. The “Salute to Educators” was an exciting opportunity for the area’s top teachers to be recognized for their hard work, dedication, and achievements—and for the community to publicly celebrate them. Gordon joined the teachers in an exclusive, on-court recognition where they were introduced to the crowd.
