What is Depression Causes of Depression Research suggests that the cause of depression can be from various genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors. Risk factors for depression can include: Family history of depression Experiencing traumatic or stressful life events Low self-esteem, negative body image Physical illness, health problems, or medications Excessive social media use Substance abuse Depression also co-occurs with other illnesses such as diabetes, cancer, or heart disease. Symptoms of Depression It is important to educate yourself on the signs of depression so you can recognize them in yourself and your loved ones and get help. A person with major depression may also seem totally “fine” on the outside and not display any obvious symptoms around other people. This is one of the reasons it is so important to check up on your loved one’s wellness and give them support when they need it. Some of the first signs of depression, according to the NIH, can include: Feelings of sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness Restlessness Difficulties with concentration, memory or decision-making Lethargy, fatigue, little energy Irritability Little interest in things you once loved Changes in eating and sleeping habits Inexplicable aches, pains, headaches or stomach problems Depression Treatment Depression is commonly treated with medication, psychiatry, or a combination of both. However, depression, like any mental illness, does not get treated overnight. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the most commonly used therapy treatment for depression. CBT is centered around identifying and changing negative thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Common medications used for treating depression can include: Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) Serotonin and Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRIs) Tricyclic and tetracyclic antidepressants Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) It is important to consult with your healthcare provider before starting any depression medication, especially if it is for teens or young adults.
