Gun shootings, suicide bombings… Singapore has always felt like such a safe haven compared to many other countries.  \n   \n But this sense of security too — like many things we’ve experienced over the past one year — has now been shaken.  \n   \n At press time, it’s unknown what could have led the student to commit such a heinous crime.  \n   \n But instead of speculating, how about spending some time praying? This prompted the emergency “Run-Hide-Tell” lockdown drill – where students go into their classrooms, lock the doors and call their form teachers for help.  \n During earlier proceedings, the court heard that the accused had attempted suicide in 2019 and was assessed at IMH.  \n   \n In an update on July 16, 2022, the Ministry of Education said that after the incident in which the 13-year-old boy was killed, the school made an effort to look out for students and staff who needed socio-emotional support.  \n RVHS was resourced with additional counsellors, and mental well-being awareness talks were conducted for its students, the ministry added.  \n The accused, who has been in remand since the incident, took his O-level examinations as a private candidate while in custody. It’s the worse kind of nightmare a parent could have. You send your children to school, but never expect that it might be the last time you see them, or that they would have to witness such a tragedy. One can’t help but wonder: What happened? Growing up, I had only heard of such crimes overseas. Gun shootings, suicide bombings… Singapore has always felt like such a safe haven compared to many other countries. But this sense of security too — like many things we’ve experienced over the past one year — has now been shaken. At press time, it’s unknown what could have led the student to commit such a heinous crime. But instead of speculating, how about spending some time praying? Before jumping to anger — at the attacker, at security protocols in school, at all other possible causes — how about taking a moment to mourn? In a statement on Friday, the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) said the accused had been remanded at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) for psychiatric assessment. Said a spokesman for the AGC: “Following extensive assessments, doctors at IMH found the accused to be suffering from major depressive disorder of moderate severity at the time of the offence. “The (AGC) has therefore decided to proceed on an amended charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.” The two boys were not known to each other, police investigations showed. Several students saw the accused outside a toilet in the school after the incident. This prompted the emergency “Run-Hide-Tell” lockdown drill – where students go into their classrooms, lock the doors and call their form teachers for help. During earlier proceedings, the court heard that the accused had attempted suicide in 2019 and was assessed at IMH. In an update on July 16, 2022, the Ministry of Education said that after the incident in which the 13-year-old boy was killed, the school made an effort to look out for students and staff who needed socio-emotional support. RVHS was resourced with additional counsellors, and mental well-being awareness talks were conducted for its students, the ministry added. He is holding an axe and asks them to call the police. The students return to their classroom and inform their teacher. \- The Sec 4 student asks another group of students in the classroom next to the toilet to call the police. The students' immediate response is the emergency 'Run-Hide-Tell' lockdown drill - they go into their classroom, lock the doors and call their form teachers for help. \- A teacher arrives at the scene and tells the student to put down the axe. He complies and is escorted away to a meeting room. It’s the worse kind of nightmare a parent could have. You send your children to school, but never expect that it might be the last time you see them, or that they would have to witness such a tragedy. One can’t help but wonder: What happened? Growing up, I had only heard of such crimes overseas. Gun shootings, suicide bombings… Singapore has always felt like such a safe haven compared to many other countries. But this sense of security too — like many things we’ve experienced over the past one year — has now been shaken. In a statement on Friday, the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) said the accused had been remanded at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) for psychiatric assessment. Said a spokesman for the AGC: “Following extensive assessments, doctors at IMH found the accused to be suffering from major depressive disorder of moderate severity at the time of the offence. “The (AGC) has therefore decided to proceed on an amended charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.” The two boys were not known to each other, police investigations showed. Several students saw the accused outside a toilet in the school after the incident. This prompted the emergency “Run-Hide-Tell” lockdown drill – where students go into their classrooms, lock the doors and call their form teachers for help. During earlier proceedings, the court heard that the accused had attempted suicide in 2019 and was assessed at IMH. In an update on July 16, 2022, the Ministry of Education said that after the incident in which the 13-year-old boy was killed, the school made an effort to look out for students and staff who needed socio-emotional support. RVHS was resourced with additional counsellors, and mental well-being awareness talks were conducted for its students, the ministry added. The accused, who has been in remand since the incident, took his O-level examinations as a private candidate while in custody. He is represented by lawyers Sunil Sudheesan and Joyce Khoo from Quahe Woo & Palmer. His case will next be heard on April 6. Offenders convicted of culpable homicide not amounting to murder can be jailed for up to 20 years, fined or caned, or receive any combination of such punishments.
