| Boilerpipe Text | 2025 Mazda MX-5 Miata
Base price: $30,515
There's a reason everyone on the internet says the Miata is always the answer. Because in most cases,
it very much is
. For decades, the Miata has been the go-to affordable sports car for those who enjoy the act of driving. The car's light weight and inherent chassis balance combine to deliver one of the best driving experiences on the market, regardless of price. Mix in
the delightful four-cylinder
and stunning six-speed transmission and you have what many on staff believe to be the perfect modern performance car. For 2024, the Miata
received updates
including a new differential and a larger infotainment screen, and it remains as fun-to-drive as ever.

2025 Toyota GR86
Base price: $31,135
In a world where dedicated performance platforms are becoming few and far between,
Toyota's GR86
is a bright ray of hope. Its simple, lightweight body and rear-wheel-drive setup make it a joy to toss around corners on and off the circuit. For 2022, the 86 received a major update, with a new fascia, a revamped interior, and most importantly, more displacement from its boxer-four, which now measures 2.4 liters and puts out 228 hp—plenty of power for a car that weighs under 3000 pounds.

2025 Subaru BRZ
Base price: $32,380
If you're thinking about buying a Toyota GR86, you should also consider the
Subaru BRZ
. Aside from a few suspension changes, they're essentially the same car underneath. The 86 is set up to oversteer a bit more from the factory, but as far as driving experience goes they're very close—you can't go wrong with either. Thankfully, pricing is almost identical.

2025 Ford Mustang
Base price: $33,515
Believe it or not, the
Ford Mustang
is the only car left in Ford's lineup that isn't a truck, SUV, or crossover. It's also one of the last affordable sports cars on the market. The EcoBoost turbo four-cylinder is the far cheaper option, but it unfortunately no longer comes with a six-speed manual transmission. Even still, its 315-hp 2.3-liter turbo-four represents good performance value. If you're willing to spend a bit more, the fantastic 480-hp 5.0-liter V-8 in the Mustang GT can be paired with a six-speed manual for under $45,000.

2025 Nissan Z
Base price: $44,110
With retro looks paired to a 400-hp twin-turbo V-6 and a manual transmission, it's hard not to love the
Nissan Z
. A starting price well under $50,000 is all the more reason to get on board. The NISMO version packs an extra 20 horsepower and track-focused upgrades, but is considerably more expensive sadly comes only with an automatic transmission. Nissan is also introducing a
Heritage Edition
model (pictured) with a slightly different face and other visual tweaks that's meant to evoke the Z's long lineage dating back to the 1960s.
Everybody Underestimates the Z NISMO
2025 BMW Z4
Base price: $55,225
Unlike its Toyota Supra sibling, the BMW Z4 roadster still offers a turbocharged four-cylinder base engine, meaning the BMW actually has a cheaper base price. The sDrive30i model has a 255-hp turbo-four, while the significantly more expensive M40i has a 382-hp inline-six. If you're a stick-shift enthusiast, you'll be glad to know that BMW is
now offering a six-speed manual transmission
with the inline-six. The so-called "Handschalter" package (German for "hand shift") costs $3500 extra and also includes other performance tweaks.

2025 Toyota Supra
Base price: $57,345
For 2025, Toyota is
dropping the cheaper four-cylinder Supra 2.0
, which means the price of entry goes up by a lot. The turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six is now the standard powertrain, which means you get 382 hp and the choice of a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic. We drove the manual version and found that it transforms the car, and the Supra remains a great-looking sports car with a huge amount of performance bang for your buck.

2025 BMW M2
Base price: $66,675
The BMW 2-series is a luxury sports coupe that may not fit the traditional definition of a sports car, but the fantastic M2 variant adds enough performance that we consider it among these ranks. It's a rear-wheel-drive two-door powered by a 473-hp twin-turbo inline-six engine, and a six-speed manual transmission is standard. It also has a widebody look that gives it far more street presence than its lesser stablemates, and the relatively usable rear seat and trunk add a measure of practicality.

2025 Chevrolet Corvette
Chevrolet
Base price: $69,995
The Corvette just barely sneaks in under $70,000, but even the base Stingray is a lot of sports car for the money. Where else can you get a mid-engine, V-8–powered beast with exotic looks for under six figures? The naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V-8 produces 490 horsepower in base form, and although we prefer models with the
Z51 performance package
, even without those upgrades the Stingray is a balanced handler with lots of capability. You even get a decent amount of cargo space thanks to the front and rear trunks.

## 2025 Toyota GR86
**Base price: \$31,135**
In a world where dedicated performance platforms are becoming few and far between, [Toyota's GR86](https://www.roadandtrack.com/reviews/a37304880/2022-toyota-gr-86-first-drive-review/) is a bright ray of hope.

## 2025 Subaru BRZ
**Base price: \$32,380**
If you're thinking about buying a Toyota GR86, you should also consider the [Subaru BRZ](https://www.roadandtrack.com/reviews/a39529467/2022-subaru-brz-review/). Aside from a few suspension changes, they're essentially the same car underneath. The 86 is set up to oversteer a bit more from the factory, but as far as driving experience goes they're very close—you can't go wrong with either. Thankfully, pricing is almost identical.

## 2025 Ford Mustang
**Base price: \$33,515**
Believe it or not, the [Ford Mustang](https://www.roadandtrack.com/news/a43118618/2024-ford-mustang-pricing/) is the only car left in Ford's lineup that isn't a truck, SUV, or crossover. It's also one of the last affordable sports cars on the market. The EcoBoost turbo four-cylinder is the far cheaper option, but it unfortunately no longer comes with a six-speed manual transmission. Even still, its 315-hp 2.3-liter turbo-four represents good performance value. If you're willing to spend a bit more, the fantastic 480-hp 5.0-liter V-8 in the Mustang GT can be paired with a six-speed manual for under \$45,000.

## 2025 Nissan Z
**Base price: \$44,110**
With retro looks paired to a 400-hp twin-turbo V-6 and a manual transmission, it's hard not to love the [Nissan Z](https://www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/a41431969/dossier-2023-nissan-z/). A starting price well under \$50,000 is all the more reason to get on board. The NISMO version packs an extra 20 horsepower and track-focused upgrades, but is considerably more expensive sadly comes only with an automatic transmission. Nissan is also introducing a [Heritage Edition](https://www.roadandtrack.com/news/a61112290/nissan-z-heritage-edition-details/) model (pictured) with a slightly different face and other visual tweaks that's meant to evoke the Z's long lineage dating back to the 1960s.

## 2025 BMW Z4
**Base price: \$55,225**
Unlike its Toyota Supra sibling, the BMW Z4 roadster still offers a turbocharged four-cylinder base engine, meaning the BMW actually has a cheaper base price. The sDrive30i model has a 255-hp turbo-four, while the significantly more expensive M40i has a 382-hp inline-six. If you're a stick-shift enthusiast, you'll be glad to know that BMW is [now offering a six-speed manual transmission](https://www.roadandtrack.com/news/a46091451/2024-bmw-z4-manual/) with the inline-six. The so-called "Handschalter" package (German for "hand shift") costs \$3500 extra and also includes other performance tweaks.

## 2025 Toyota Supra
**Base price: \$57,345**
For 2025, Toyota is [dropping the cheaper four-cylinder Supra 2.0](https://www.roadandtrack.com/news/a61456623/toyota-killing-the-four-cylinder-supra-2025/), which means the price of entry goes up by a lot.

## 2025 BMW M2
**Base price: \$66,675**
The BMW 2-series is a luxury sports coupe that may not fit the traditional definition of a sports car, but the fantastic M2 variant adds enough performance that we consider it among these ranks. It's a rear-wheel-drive two-door powered by a 473-hp twin-turbo inline-six engine, and a six-speed manual transmission is standard. It also has a widebody look that gives it far more street presence than its lesser stablemates, and the relatively usable rear seat and trunk add a measure of practicality.

## 2025 Chevrolet Corvette

Chevrolet
**Base price: \$69,995**
The Corvette just barely sneaks in under \$70,000, but even the base Stingray is a lot of sports car for the money. Where else can you get a mid-engine, V-8–powered beast with exotic looks for under six figures? The naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V-8 produces 490 horsepower in base form, and although we prefer models with the [Z51 performance package](https://www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/a45265086/corvette-dad-car/), even without those upgrades the Stingray is a balanced handler with lots of capability. You even get a decent amount of cargo space thanks to the front and rear trunks.
