Ever since the 1884 debut of Coney Island’s Switchback Railway , the first purpose-built roller coaster (as opposed to simply converting an old rail line), these attractions have been a staple of theme parks. Plenty of variations have entertained visitors over the decades - from small, unimposing tracks to massively frightening rides with all manner of twists, turns, and drops.  As technology and building techniques improved over the last century, roller coaster engineers and architects have grown more ambitious and daring. They regularly aim to break records and please their thrill-seeking fans , with their creations found all over the world . Below are some of the tallest, fastest, and scariest roller coasters to ever cater to adrenaline addicts. Photo: 1 Photo: Where Is It: New Jersey / Six Flags Great Adventure The Drop: Kingda Ka is a can't-miss ride for people who love heights - or at least love to be scared by them. It has a pinnacle of 456 feet and a speed of up to 128 mph, thanks to the massive spiraling hill riders are quickly sent over, taking just 3-4 seconds to reach its top speed. What It's Known For: On its 2005 debut, this was the tallest and fastest roller coaster in the world. Although its speed record was broken in 2010, its height has yet to be surpassed. The drop tower exerts a massive 5 Gs of force on riders as they descend. Fun Fact: Attached to Kingda Ka's drop tower is Zumanjaro: Drop of Doom, the world’s tallest drop ride. This newer record-setter opened in 2014 and gives its kingly partner even more prominence. 152 votes What do you think? One scary ride? 2 Photo: Where Is It: Florida / Busch Gardens The Drop: Rich in overbanked turns and inversions, Iron Gwazi has a standout zero-G stall that leaves riders feeling truly weightless. It boasts a height of 206 feet with a 91 degree drop. What It's Known For:  Its speed and incline make it one of the fastest and steepest roller coasters in existence. That’s saying something when in the very same state are many competing theme parks. Fun Fact: As a hybrid roller coaster , Iron Gwazi makes heavy use of both metal and wood in its construction. 133 votes One scary ride? 3 Photo: Where Is It: United Arab Emirates / Ferrari World The Drop: Speed lovers will have an unforgettable experience with this one. Since 2010, Formula Rossa has been the fastest roller coaster in the world, clocking in at a maximum of 149.1 mph. It doesn't feature any inversions or hard twists; efficiently executed fast twists and turns are its primary aim. What It's Known For: To earn its title as the world's fastest coaster, it accelerates from 0 to 149 mph in just 4.9 seconds. Ferrari World's website explains how this works : Formula Rossa is powered by a hydraulic winch system similar to the technology used to launch jet planes and is designed to resemble the famous red racing cars of Scuderia Ferrari. Fun Fact: Being the world’s fastest roller coaster comes with a small price for riders. Anyone who wants to satisfy their need for speed must wear goggles to protect their eyes from possible impact by insects, sand, or even dust. 99 votes One scary ride? 4 Photo: Where Is It: Japan / Fuji-Q Highland The Drop: Few other rides in the world will provide the number of dizzying inversions that Eejanaika does, with 14 total. It tops out at nearly 250 feet tall, has a maximum depth of 89 degrees, and a top speed of 78 mph. What It's Known For: Eejanaika is a fourth-dimension coaster, where the seats pivot separately from the track. This makes for a dynamic experience where riders than feel more inversions than the track alone can offer. Fun Fact: This ride is apparently tied with The Smiler at Alton Towers in the UK for the most inversions. This is because the latter has 14 actual loops, while all but three of Eejanaika’s are seat inversions . 83 votes One scary ride? 5 Photo: Where Is It: China / Sunac Land The Drop: Fans of the weightlessness felt during airtime won't want to miss this one.   According to manufacturer Intamin , Legendary Twin Dragon offers riders four forward and four backward swings, plus six weightless airtime experiences. It maxes out at speeds of approximately 74 mph. What It's Known For: It broke records in 2021 for being the highest and fastest double-twisted impulse coaster. Legendary Twin Dragon sends passengers up its twisted 229-foot track before braking and reversing the cars. Fun Fact: Lichtenstein-based Intamin first brought the concept of an impulse coaster to life in 1998, with the Linear Gale at Tokyo Dome City in Japan. 98 votes One scary ride? 6 Photo: Where Is It: Illinois / Six Flags Great America The Drop: In the world of wooden roller coasters, Goliath lives up to its name with a top height of 165 feet. It's remarkably fast for this type of coaster at 72 mph, and it sends riders on a 180-foot drop, including through two inversion tunnels. What It's Known For: Goliath broke three records upon its debut in 2014. It was deemed the fastest wooden roller coaster in the world, while its drop earned two records for being the steepest and tallest for a wooden coaster. While the latter two accolades have since been exceeded by newer rides, it's managed to hold on to the first. Fun Fact: It was built on the site of Iron Wolf , a roller coaster that locked passengers into a standing position. The latter was disassembled and converted to a comparatively conventional floorless design at a theme park in Maryland. 80 votes One scary ride?

Since 2010, [Formula Rossa](https://www.ferrariworldabudhabi.com/en/rides/formula-rossa) has been the fastest roller coaster in the world, clocking in at a maximum of 149.1 mph. It doesn't feature any inversions or hard twists; efficiently executed fast twists and turns are its primary aim. What It's Known For: To earn its title as the world's fastest coaster, it accelerates from 0 to 149 mph in just 4.9 seconds. This is because the latter has 14 actual loops, while [all but three of Eejanaika’s are seat inversions](https://www.themeparktourist.com/features/20210312/29704/wtf-coaster-month-eejanaika). 83 votes One scary ride? - **5** ![Legendary Twin Dragon Has An Incredible Amount Of Airtime](https://imgix.ranker.com/user_node_img/50146/1002906602/original/1002906602-photo-u924774356?auto=format&q=60&fit=crop&fm=pjpg&dpr=2&w=500) - Photo: Where Is It: China / Sunac Land The Drop: Fans of the weightlessness felt during airtime won't want to miss this one. Fun Fact: It was built on [the site of Iron Wolf](https://wgntv.com/podcasts/coastin-the-country/from-iron-wolf-to-pipeline-the-evolution-of-the-standup-roller-coaster/), a roller coaster that locked passengers into a standing position. The latter was disassembled and converted to a comparatively conventional floorless design at a theme park in Maryland. 80 votes One scary ride?
