Brazil 1970 was the first World Cup shown on color TV, and it featured probably the greatest World Cup winners the globe ever saw donning canary yellow jerseys. Commanded by Pelé (four goals) and Jairzinho (seven goals) leading the offense, the Seleção outscored opposition 19-7 while winning every one of their six matches. They were the first team to achieve this feat in a single tournament. Two of Brazil’s wins were by one goal - a group-stage standoff with England (1-0) and a shootout versus Romania (3-2). In the knockout rounds, Brazil crushed their competitors, besting South American rivals Peru 4-2 and Uruguay 3-1 before leveling Italy 4-1 in the Final, after Italy had just taken down Franz Beckenbauer and Golden Boot winner Gerd Müller's West Germany in the semifinals. In front of more than 100,000 fans at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, Brazil delivered football at its finest in the WC Final. Pelé scored the opener off a Rivellino cross 18 minutes in, and Carlos Alberto hammered the ball in the corner of net with a brilliant team goal. Brazil never looked back.

It's tough to rank the best Brazil teams of all time because there's just so many, but the 2002
Seleção
were just unstoppable. They were the first - and only still - team to finish the World Cup with seven wins and no losses. Ronaldo scored eight goals, Rivaldo scored five and a young Ronaldinho scored twice. Brazil netted 18 times against four allowed. In the knockout stages, Brazil bested Belgium 2-0, England 2-1 and Turkey 1-0. Though Oliver Kahn was awarded the Golden Ball for aiding Germany's finals run, he could do nothing to stop Ronaldo and Brazil in their 2-0 victory.

Sandwiched between Spain's back-to-back European Championships, Spain’s golden generation linked a decade long run of dominance with a beautifully pragmatic performance to win their first World Cup.
La Furia Roja
scored just eight goals, but were impossible to beat in 2010 thanks to a superb defense and magnificent midfield. With Iker Casillas between the sticks and a backline commanded by Sergio Ramos and Carlos Puyol, midfielders Xavi and Andrés Iniesta controlled games like no one else before them. Up top, David Villa added just enough scoring for Spain to gut out four consecutive 1-0 victories in the knockout stage. It wasn't all roses, though, as Spain actually lost their opening match 0-1 to Switzerland before regrouping. Following a 2-1 win vs. Chile to win the group, Spain did not allow another goal the rest of the competition via a remarkable display of defensive possession football. Spain's impressive semifinal win versus Germany, who had just thumped Argentina 4-0, would got down as an all time clinic. Vicente del Bosque's men sacrificed stats for a pure, total 90 possession style that saw them record the lowest goal differential (+6) of all World Cup winners.

Germany's first World Cup win as a unified country also doubles as its likely best. Germany finished third in 2006 and in 2010 following a runner-up showing in 2002. In 2014, Germany finally put it all together with a dominating performance, as
Die Mannschaft
wowed with an 18-4 advantage in total goals. Although stymied by a 2-2 draw against Ghana in the group stage, Germany never really looked like it could lose. It took extra time to knock out Algeria, but the Germans then delivered France its only loss of the tournament on a quarterfinals platter. The 7-1 leveling of Brazil was one of the most remarkable beatdowns in World Cup history, mostly because of the capitulation of the host nation, but also because Germany finished the job against Argentina and Lionel Messi in the finals. Mario Götze broke a scoreless finals deadlock in the 113th minute and the Germans were crowned World Cup winners.

France 1998 proved that it's not about how you start, but how you finish. After a pedestrian showing in the knockout rounds,
Les Bleus
capped off their WC run with an incredible 3-0 win over Brazil in the final. France suffocated its group with nine goals for and one against in a group including Denmark, South Africa and Saudi Arabia. From there, France needed a golden goal against Paraguay, penalties versus Italy and a second-half brace from right back Lillian Thuram to rally past Croatia 2-1. It was a sight to behold when Pelé burst onto the scene as a precocious 17-year-old and scored six goals at the 1958 World Cup, including two in the Final, as he led Brazil to its first ever World Cup victory. The ‘58 Brazil team had plenty of attacking verve, with Vavá (five goals) joining Pelé on an attack that netted 16 goals in six matches. The
Canarinho
outscored their Semifinal and Final opponents by a combined 10-4. The defense was impressive, allowing only four goals the entire tournament. Of particular note, Brazil basically shutdown France’s Just Fontaine, who was considered one of the best players in the world at the time, as they held Fontaine to one goal, after the striker scored 12 goals in his other five matches. The 1958 World Cup served as a jumping off point for Brazil, as they would go on a run to win three World Cup titles in four tournaments - only interrupted by Eusébio's brilliance in 1966.

STARTING XI:

It's tough to rank the best Brazil teams of all time because there's just so many, but the 2002 Seleção were just unstoppable. STARTING XI:

Sandwiched between Spain's back-to-back European Championships, Spain’s golden generation linked a decade long run of dominance with a beautifully pragmatic performance to win their first World Cup. La Furia Roja scored just eight goals, but were impossible to beat in 2010 thanks to a superb defense and magnificent midfield. STARTING XI:

Germany's first World Cup win as a unified country also doubles as its likely best. Germany finished third in 2006 and in 2010 following a runner-up showing in 2002. In 2014, Germany finally put it all together with a dominating performance, as Die Mannschaft wowed with an 18-4 advantage in total goals. STARTING XI:
GK Manuel Neuer

France 1998 proved that it's not about how you start, but how you finish. After a pedestrian showing in the knockout rounds, Les Bleus capped off their WC run with an incredible 3-0 win over Brazil in the final. France suffocated its group with nine goals for and one against in a group including Denmark, South Africa and Saudi Arabia. From there, France needed a golden goal against Paraguay, penalties versus Italy and a second-half brace from right back Lillian Thuram to rally past Croatia 2-1. France finished with an stunning plus-13 goal differential while allowing only two, making it [the best defensive](https://www.ranker.com/crowdranked-list/greatest-defensive-tackles-of-all-time?ref=internalCrossLinking_keyword) performance in World Cup history (later matched by Italy 2006 and Spain 2010). The Canarinho outscored their Semifinal and Final opponents by a combined 10-4.
