Travel insurance gives you financial protection against unexpected events. Medical emergencies, flight or travel cancellations, lost luggage and theft can all be covered by insurance, up to the limits of the policy.
Many people buy holiday insurance for peace of mind. If you fall ill in another country, medical care or repatriation could leave you out of pocket by tens or even hundreds of thousands of pounds. Travel insurance helps to minimise the financial risk of such events.
Travel cover can also protect those travelling with you, and your belongings. If your luggage is lost, your insurance policy payout can help recover the costs of repurchasing your items. If you need to cancel your trip due to factors like redundancy or illness, insurance can help you recover those costs as well.
Post Office Travel Insurance can cover you for a single trip of up to 365 days
2
, or multiple trips in a single year. This applies to trips taken anywhere in the UK and abroad too. We also offer backpacker cover
7
for a single trip of up to 18 months.
The type and level of cover provided depends on the insurance policy type and options you choose. It can include cover for:
Cancellation
Cutting your trip short and abandonment of your trip
Emergency medical expenses
Lost, stolen or damaged baggage
Lost, stolen or damaged passports
Lost, stolen or damaged personal money
Personal accidents and liability
Legal protection
You can add additional cover to your policy. Options include:
Gadget cover
Excess waiver
Trip disruption
45- or 60-day trip extensions (on
annual multi-trip
 only)
Winter sports cover
is compulsory for winter sports trips and
cruise cover
is mandatory if youâre going on a cruise. Itâs important to check the different travel insurances available, and their various options and add-ons you can buy. This way, youâre sure to be fully covered for your trip and all youâll do on it.
Yes, you should still get holiday insurance even if you have the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or its replacement, the UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC). These cards will not cover all medical needs. Some of the most expensive medical services, such as repatriation, arenât covered. They also wonât help with things like cancellation, loss or theft, all of which can be covered by travel insurance.
If youâre travelling in Europe, the EHIC no longer provides access to healthcare for UK nationals travelling to Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland.
If you are travelling outside of the EU, a good travel insurance policy is a necessity as EHIC and GHIC cards are not valid.
Our travel insurance covers emergency treatment and hospitalisation, plus repatriation (getting you back to the UK) if you need it. Cover is provided up to the limit specified in the policy wording for the specific cover level you choose.
If you have existing medical conditions, you must declare them fully when you take out a policy, along with any prescribed medication youâre taking. We cover most pre-existing medical conditions, but failure to declare them could invalidate your policy.
Emergency medical assistance
If you need emergency medical assistance, you can call our dedicated team. They're here 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to get you the help you need. Check the correct contact details for your policy on ourÂ
travel insurance help and support page
.
Non-emergency medical support
If itâs not an emergency but you still need to see a medical professional, you can use our
Medical Assistance Plus
3
service. This outpatient service is included free with all Post Office Travel Insurance policies with no excess to pay. Get easy access to English-speaking medical experts such as doctors, dentists and gastroenterologists. The single online platform can be used anywhere outside the UK. Choose whether youâre seen at a clinic, in your hotel or via an online video consultation. All sessions are in your own language. They even have prescriptions delivered to your nearest pharmacy. This takes away the stress of finding medical help, so you can kick back and enjoy your holiday to the full.
The cost of travel insurance depends on things like your age, pre-existing medical conditions, destination, trip length, and the type of policy you need. Generally speaking, Travel insurance can save you money if something were to go wrong.
Single-trip policies are cheaper than annual multi-trip policies, but choosing an annual policy is much more cost-effective if you travel multiple times a year.
Get holiday insurance as soon as you book your trip. This will make sure youâre covered if anything happens and you need to cancel your holiday (such as falling ill or a family bereavement).

## Common travel insurance questions
- ### What is holiday insurance and why do I need it?
- ### What does travel insurance cover?
Post Office Travel Insurance can cover you for a single trip of up to 365 days2, or multiple trips in a single year. This applies to trips taken anywhere in the UK and abroad too. We also offer backpacker cover7 for a single trip of up to 18 months.
The type and level of cover provided depends on the insurance policy type and options you choose. It can include cover for:
- Cancellation
- Cutting your trip short and abandonment of your trip
- Emergency medical expenses
- Lost, stolen or damaged baggage
- Lost, stolen or damaged passports
- Lost, stolen or damaged personal money
- Personal accidents and liability
- Legal protection
You can add additional cover to your policy. Options include:
- [Gadget cover](https://www.postoffice.co.uk/travel-insurance/gadget-cover)
- [Excess waiver](https://www.postoffice.co.uk/travel-insurance/excess-waiver)
- [Trip disruption](https://www.postoffice.co.uk/travel-insurance/travel-disruption)
- 45- or 60-day trip extensions (on [annual multi-trip](https://www.postoffice.co.uk/travel-insurance/annual-multi-trip) only)
[Winter sports cover](https://www.postoffice.co.uk/travel-insurance/ski-winter-sports) is compulsory for winter sports trips and [cruise cover](https://www.postoffice.co.uk/travel-insurance/cruise) is mandatory if youâre going on a cruise. Itâs important to check the different travel insurances available, and their various options and add-ons you can buy. This way, youâre sure to be fully covered for your trip and all youâll do on it.
- ### Do I need to buy holiday insurance if I have an EHIC or GHIC card?
- ### What medical expenses are covered by Post Office Travel Insurance?
Our travel insurance covers emergency treatment and hospitalisation, plus repatriation (getting you back to the UK) if you need it. Cover is provided up to the limit specified in the policy wording for the specific cover level you choose.
If you have existing medical conditions, you must declare them fully when you take out a policy, along with any prescribed medication youâre taking. We cover most pre-existing medical conditions, but failure to declare them could invalidate your policy.
**Emergency medical assistance**
If you need emergency medical assistance, you can call our dedicated team. They're here 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to get you the help you need. Check the correct contact details for your policy on our [travel insurance help and support page](https://www.postoffice.co.uk/help-support/travel-insurance).
**Non-emergency medical support**
If itâs not an emergency but you still need to see a medical professional, you can use our [Medical Assistance Plus](https://www.postoffice.co.uk/travel-insurance/medical-assistance)3 service.
- ### How much is holiday insurance?
The cost of travel insurance depends on things like your age, pre-existing medical conditions, destination, trip length, and the type of policy you need. Generally speaking, Travel insurance can save you money if something were to go wrong.
Single-trip policies are cheaper than annual multi-trip policies, but choosing an annual policy is much more cost-effective if you travel multiple times a year.
- ### When should you buy holiday insurance?
Get holiday insurance as soon as you book your trip. This will make sure youâre covered if anything happens and you need to cancel your holiday (such as falling ill or a family bereavement).
- [Read more](https://www.postoffice.co.uk/travel-insurance)
- ### What are the key things to look for in a holiday insurance policy?
Look for a policy that includes key basics, such as cover for medical expenses and repatriation, cancellation cover, missed departures and delays, luggage cover, travel abandonment, and personal liability cover. With any travel insurance policy make sure that it meets your travel needs and the cover limits are sufficient for your trip.
We also make it easy to upgrade your policy with things like [trip disruption cover](https://www.postoffice.co.uk/travel-insurance/travel-disruption), [gadget cover](https://www.postoffice.co.uk/travel-insurance/gadget-cover), [winter sports cover](https://www.postoffice.co.uk/travel-insurance/ski-winter-sports), [cruise cover](https://www.postoffice.co.uk/travel-insurance/cruise), and [trip extensions](https://www.postoffice.co.uk/travel-insurance/amt-trip-extension).
- ### Why choose Post Office for Travel Insurance?
We offer reliable travel insurance for both occasional and frequent travellers, with single-trip and multi-trip cover available. In the last five years alone, weâve paid out over ÂŁ62 million in claims.
Weâre an award winning provider, having won Best Travel Insurance Provider at the Your Money Awards in 2025.
Our premier cover is 5 Star Defaqto Rated. Defaqto is a financial information business, helping financial institutions and consumers make better informed decisions.
- ### What cover is there for Covid-19 as standard?
Our policies provide cover for cancellation for Covid-19 if:
- A medical practitioner certifies you as too ill to travel due to Covid-19
- You, an immediate relative8, a travelling companion or their immediate relative, a person you are planning to stay with dies or is hospitalised due to Covid-19
If an insured trip has to be cut short, the unused portion of it can be claimed for if:
- You, an immediate relative8, a travelling companion or their immediate relative, a person you are planning to stay with dies or is hospitalised due to Covid-19
- There's also cover for medical and repatriation costs if you fall ill with Covid-19 while away. Call our emergency assistance line and we'll help you seek treatment if needed, we can also arrange to bring you back to the UK
There's no other coronavirus cover on our policies but, for extra reassurance, you can add our [trip disruption cover](https://www.postoffice.co.uk/travel-insurance/travel-disruption) upgrade option. This gives you added protection against missed departures and expenses charged due to change of testing or quarantine requirements. Add it to your preferred policy for an extra premium.
Should the FCDO advise against all travel to your destination, there's no cover under any section of the policy if you decide to travel.
If the FCDO have advised to only undertake essential travel to a destination and your trip's not essential and you choose to travel, we'll only cover a claim if the cause is not linked to the reason for the FCDO advice. This limitation applies even if you've purchased an optional [trip disruption cover](https://www.postoffice.co.uk/travel-insurance/travel-disruption) upgrade. You may be able to travel with full cover if we authorise in writing that your trip's essential before you depart. Should you like to request this, please email travelinsurancefeedback@postoffice.co.uk
Please make sure youâre clear whatâs covered and whatâs not. Check the answers to common questions about coronavirus cover and the full policy wording for more details.
- ### Do I need travel insurance for UK trips?
We provide cover whether youâre taking a break in the UK or going on holiday overseas. Youâre covered if your luggage or personal belongings are lost, stolen or damaged while youâre staying away from home in Britain. And if you have to cancel or cut short your trip in some circumstances, we can cover that too. As long as it matches the reasons set out in your policy.
Our annual multi-trip travel insurance can cover you for UK trips too. The minimum requirements are one nightâs pre-booked and paid accommodation. Or your stay must be at least 100 miles from your home. Or you must have at least one sea crossing.
- ### Does travel insurance include gadget cover?

Single article limits apply (ÂŁ150 for economy policies, ÂŁ250 for standard, and ÂŁ400 for premier).

Post Office Travel Insurance can cover you for a single trip of up to 365 days2, or multiple trips in a single year. This applies to trips taken anywhere in the UK and abroad too. We also offer backpacker cover7 for a single trip of up to 18 months.
The type and level of cover provided depends on the insurance policy type and options you choose. It can include cover for:
- Cancellation
- Cutting your trip short and abandonment of your trip
- Emergency medical expenses
- Lost, stolen or damaged baggage
- Lost, stolen or damaged passports
- Lost, stolen or damaged personal money
- Personal accidents and liability
- Legal protection
You can add additional cover to your policy. Options include:

- ###

- ###
Get holiday insurance as soon as you book your trip. This will make sure youâre covered if anything happens and you need to cancel your holiday (such as falling ill or a family bereavement).
