| Boilerpipe Text | Coughing can be strenuous and annoying. Home remedies against coughing and against a dry cough can ease symptoms and complaints. So you can help yourself feel better. Which of the home remedies to choose always depends on the type of cough and what triggers it.
Remember: Home remedies against a cough are no cure, they only relieve the symptoms
Home remedies against a cough do not fight what is causing the cough; nor do they cure it. All they can do is help to loosen the mucus, reduce the urge to cough and support the healing process. Home remedies against a cough are in no way a substitute for medical treatment.
If you have a severe, persistent or chronic dry cough or if you have a cough that is accompanied by pain, fever or yellow, green or even bloody sputum, you should seek urgent medical attention to investigate the cause.
An overview of home remedies against a cough
To naturally soothe your cough, you can try the following at home.
Drink plenty
Inhale saline solutions with an inhalation device (steam does not help against a cough)
Practise breathing techniques and use a breathing trainer
Use a nasal shower if your cough is coming from your sinuses
Warm wraps
Drink herbal teas
One of the most popular home remedies against a cough is to drink plenty of herbal tea – and rightly so. Firstly, drinking helps in general to liquify the mucus and keeps the mucous membranes moist from the inside out. Moist mucous membranes are essential for good respiratory health.
Dry mucous membranes, on the other hand, do not have the protective barrier they need to fight pathogens. Also, dry bronchial mucous membranes tend to become irritated more quickly, which can either cause or exacerbate a dry cough. The warmth of the herbal tea is also soothing.
A cup of herbal tea – one of the most popular home remedies for a cough – helps to moisten the bronchial mucous membranes from the inside out and so soothes a dry cough. The mucus also liquifies and is easier to cough up.
Inhaling saline solutions with a nebuliser
Inhalation therapy with saline solution
can help against a cough. That is because inhalation therapy is a tried and tested method for treating respiratory diseases. This is the most direct delivery method: The active agents reach where they are needed, i.e. the lungs.
The salt from the saline solution only reaches the bronchial tubes if inhaled with a nebuliser. Inhaling over hot steam as a home remedy against a cough does not, however, act in the lungs. The large steam droplets only get as far as the nose and throat and the salt remains behind in the pot.
Only inhalation devices generate droplets that can reach the lungs
The mist from a saline solution only reaches the bronchial tubes if it is generated by an inhalation device with a nebuliser such as the
PARI COMPACT2
. The inhalation device disperses the saline solution in droplets fine enough to enter the lungs.
The soothing inhalation therapy takes less than 10 minutes with a 2.5 ml ampoule and, depending on the inhalation solution, moistens the lungs or also acts as an expectorant.
Saline solutions – depending on the salt concentration – moisten the mucous membranes or clear mucus from the bronchial tubes. The natural active agent ectoin also protects the mucous membranes.
Saline solutions for inhalation therapy for moistening, protecting and loosening mucus in the airways
Inhaling medically produced
saline solutions
with an inhalation device is just as natural as inhaling steam – and it is more effective and more hygienic. The inhalation solutions are manufactured in a sterile setting and are packed in a clinically clean environment. This ensures that you do not breathe in viruses, bacteria or other pathogens. That could happen if you mix saline solutions yourself.
There are saline solutions with different salt contents:
Isotonic saline solution (0.9% NaCl)
: By moistening and nurturing the bronchial tubes and mucous membranes, inhalation therapy with isotonic saline solution soothes a dry cough.
Hypertonic saline solution
: The higher saline content makes hypertonic saline solution very effective at loosening mucus. It is suitable for use against a productive cough because it makes the mucus easier to cough up more gently.
And also:
The
myth that inhaling hot steam fights a cough
is a persistent one. This home remedy only helps against complaints of the upper airways – i.e. the nose and throat – but not a cough caused by an infection or irritation of the bronchial tubes.
The steam droplets are too large to reach the lungs. The steam cannot hold the salt dissolved in water and transport it to the bronchial tubes. The salt remains behind in the pot. In children, there is also the risk that they may burn themselves on the hot steam.
Nasal douche against sinus-related coughs
First a
dry cough
and then a
productive cough
can be symptoms that go hand-in-hand with
sinusitis
. The cough is caused by nasal secretions trickling down your throat and reaching your cough receptors,
which is what makes you cough
. A cough is a protective mechanism that stops the mucus entering your bronchial tubes.
A nasal douche with a nasal saline rinse will remove a large proportion of the nasal mucus. This is why a
nasal douche
is sometimes an effective home remedy against a cough, even if it sounds a bit strange at first.
Unbelievable, but true: A nasal douche can be a helpful home remedy against a cough if mucus from your nose trickles down your throat and stimulates a protective cough reflex. Nasal secretions must not enter the lungs.
Warm warps or a damp towel with a hot water bottle
Moist heat always has a relaxing effect on the bronchial muscles, stimulates circulation and helps to release the mucus in the lungs. Thanks to its relaxing effect on the muscles, moist heat is also a good
home remedy for relieving the pain of coughing
.
How to make warm wraps:
Wet a towel with hot water so that the heat is right for you.
Wring out the towel hard.
Wrap it tightly around your chest. This is easier if you have some help.
Wrap a dry towel around the moist one.
Tuck yourself under a blanket.
Once the towel has cooled down, remove it and, if necessary, prepare the next chest wrap.
A faster method with a similar effect is to use a towel and a hot water bottle:
Lay a damp, warm towel on your chest.
Put a hot water bottle on top of it.
Place a dry towel over it.
Slide under a blanket.
REMEMBER
for moist heat: Do not use warm wraps for fever or acute inflammation.
Home remedies against a cough: Moist heat. It relaxes the bronchial muscles, has a calming effect and stimulates circulation. That makes it easier to loosen mucus.

## Inhaling saline solutions with a nebuliser
[Inhalation therapy with saline solution](https://www.pari.com/int/inhalation-therapy/inhalation-therapy-with-saline/ "PARI Website » Nebulise saline") can help against a cough.

### Only inhalation devices generate droplets that can reach the lungs
The mist from a saline solution only reaches the bronchial tubes if it is generated by an inhalation device with a nebuliser such as the [PARI COMPACT2](https://www.pari.com/int/products/inhalation-devices-for-the-lungs/pari-compact2-int/ "PARI Website » PARI COMPACT2"). The inhalation device disperses the saline solution in droplets fine enough to enter the lungs.

### Saline solutions for inhalation therapy for moistening, protecting and loosening mucus in the airways
Inhaling medically produced [saline solutions](https://www.pari.com/int/inhalation-therapy/inhalation-therapy-with-saline/ "PARI Website » Nebulise saline") with an inhalation device is just as natural as inhaling steam – and it is more effective and more hygienic. The inhalation solutions are manufactured in a sterile setting and are packed in a clinically clean environment. This ensures that you do not breathe in viruses, bacteria or other pathogens. That could happen if you mix saline solutions yourself.

- [Isotonic saline solution (0.9% NaCl)](https://www.pari.com/int/products/inhalation-solutions/pari-nacl-09-inhalation-solution/ "PARI Website » PARI NaCl 0,9% Inhalation Solution"): By moistening and nurturing the bronchial tubes and mucous membranes, inhalation therapy with isotonic saline solution soothes a dry cough.
- [Hypertonic saline solution](https://www.pari.com/int/blog/hypertonic-saline-solution-inhalation/ "PARI Blog » Hypertonic saline solution: Everything you need to know about inhalation solution"): The higher saline content makes hypertonic saline solution very effective at loosening mucus. It is suitable for use against a productive cough because it makes the mucus easier to cough up more gently.
**And also:** The [myth that inhaling hot steam fights a cough](https://www.pari.com/int/blog/the-myth-of-steam-inhalation-why-steam-does-not-help-for-coughs/ "PARI Blog » The myth of steam inhalation – why steam does not help for coughs") is a persistent one.
## Breathing techniques and breathing trainers
Often neglected, but effective and very natural: You can alleviate your dry cough with your own breathing – with a twofold effect. Firstly, there are [breathing techniques with which you can suppress the dry cough](https://www.pari.com/int/blog/tips-urge-coughing-fit/ "PARI Blog » Stopping the urge to cough: 8 tips that can help you manage a coughing fit") and keep it under control. Secondly, special [type of breathing can allow you to gently breathe up the secretions](https://www.pari.com/int/blog/breathing-technique-overview/ "PARI Blog » Helpful breathing techniques everyone should know") instead of coughing them up if you have a [cough with mucus](https://www.pari.com/int/blog/cough-sputum-mucus-tips/ "PARI Blog » A cough with sputum – what causes the annoying mucus and what to do about it").
And then special [exercises can mobilise the mucus in the bronchial tubes](https://www.pari.com/int/blog/overview-exercises-shift-mucus-lungs/ "PARI Blog » Mucus build-up in the lungs? An overview of exercises that shift mucus from the lungs") and naturally reduce the cough.
Breathing trainers such as the [PARI PEP systems](https://www.pari.com/int/products/pari-pep-systems/ "PARI Website » PARI PEP Systems") or the PARI O-PEP also help to release the secretions.

The PARI O-PEP is a small breathing trainer for home use that loosens mucus. A ball inside the device makes the bronchial tubes oscillate slightly. The mucus is shaken off of the bronchial walls. That makes it easier for you to cough up the secretions.
## Nasal douche against sinus-related coughs
