| Boilerpipe Text | Most people have heard something about the total solar eclipse crossing Oregon and the continental United States this summer, but for many two simple questions linger: Where can I see it, and when is it happening? It's still several months away, but you might want to take this opportunity to block out the date and figure out the other big question: how you're going to navigate through the traffic and crowds to see it. The solar eclipse will happen on Monday, Aug. 21, 2017. The timing of the eclipse differs slightly depending on where you're viewing it, but the partial eclipse will begin shortly after 9 a.m. in Oregon, reaching totality between 10:15 and 10:25. How long you see the total eclipse depends largely upon how close you are to the center of what's called the "path of totality" (more on that below). Viewers at the center of the path will experience the shadow for about two minutes, while those on the outskirts will see it for as little as a few seconds. This handy interactive map will tell you the duration and timing of the eclipse for any point on the map, down to the millisecond (just note that all times there are in Universal Time, which is seven hours ahead of Pacific Time). The path of the 2017 solar Eclipse Source: NASA The solar eclipse will cross the entire continent, but it makes first landfall right here in Oregon. Everybody in the state will see at least a 90 percent eclipse, but if you want to experience the cosmic event to its fullest you'll want to be in what's called the "path of totality" -Ā a band about 60 miles wide that will cross cities like Lincoln City, Salem, Madras and Baker City. People in that path will be able to look at the total eclipse without eye protection once it's dark, seeing fountains of plasma exploding from the surface of the sun, as all light from the sun is blotted out in the shadow of the moon. Where you go to see it might also depend on how much you're willing to fight crowds. State officials expect about 1 million people to come to Oregon for the event, and anticipate unprecedented crowding on public lands and highways around the path of totality. So while it might sound reasonable to hop in the car and head down the morning of, you might get stuck seeing only the partial eclipse from inside your car. Most people have heard *something* about the total solar eclipse crossing Oregon and the continental United States this summer, but for many two simple questions linger: Where can I see it, and when is it happening?
It's still several months away, but you might want to take this opportunity to block out the date and figure out the other big question: how you're going to navigate through the traffic and crowds to see it.
**WHEN?**
