You’d have to dig up the receipt (that is — if you even remembered to save it) and the item’s original packaging. Then, you’d slog all the way back to the store to stand in line at customer service with cranky fellow shoppers under bright fluorescent store lighting as Tom Jones’ “Delilah” played on the overhead speakers.

These days, however, returns are a lot more consumer friendly. Retailers have streamlined the return process with handy innovations like prepaid return shipping labels and UPS QR codes. Leading the way in the move towards frictionless returns is tech giant
Amazon
, which offers
free, super-simple returns on millions of products
.
In this guide, we’re going to walk you through the process of making a free Amazon return, step by step. We’re also going to break down the eight ways you can make an Amazon return so you can decide which one is best for you.
How to make a free Amazon return
First, make sure your purchase is eligible to be returned. To be eligible for free return service, items must weigh under 50 pounds and be in new, unused condition. In most cases, returns must be initiated within 30 days of purchase, and will be refunded within three to five days after receipt.
Here is how to start a free Amazon return, step by step:
Step one: Select the item you want to return.
Log in to your Amazon account and go to
Your Orders
. Find the order and hit the “Return or Replace Items” button. Check off the box next to the item you want to return.
Step two: Select a reason for the return.
After checking off the item you want to return, a drop-down menu will appear.
Use the drop-down menu to select a reason for your return. You can choose from the following responses:
Inaccurate website description.
Product and shipping box both damaged.
Item defective or doesn’t work.
Better price available.
Item arrived too late.
Bought by mistake.
Wrong item was sent.
Received extra item I didn’t buy (no refund needed).
No longer needed.

You will also be prompted to leave a comment. For certain responses — including “Inaccurate website description,” “Product and shipping box both damaged,” “Item defective or doesn’t work” and “Better price available” — you may be required to leave a comment providing more detail on the reason for your return. These comments usually won’t affect your return, but could be shared with Amazon sellers to alert them of any problems with shipments and products.
Step three: Choose how to receive your refund.
Next, you’ll be asked to choose how to receive your refund. You typically have two options:
Refund to your Amazon account balance.
With this option, you will be refunded with a gift card balance on your Amazon account. Amazon typically sends you the credit within two to four hours after receiving your return.
Refund to your in your original payment method.
With this option, you will be refunded the cost of the item in your original payment method.
Step four: Choose your return method.
Finally, it’s time to choose how to send back your return. We’ll walk you through all the different ways you can return your item to Amazon in the next section.
8 different ways to return your item to Amazon
You made it to step four: choosing how to deliver your item back to Amazon. To help you choose the best method for your needs, we’ve broken down all eight ways you can return an item to Amazon below. Keep in mind, the options available to you may vary depending on the product you are returning.
Skip to a return method:
Kohl’s Amazon returns
Amazon UPS Store returns
Amazon Book Store returns
Amazon Whole Foods returns
Amazon UPS Pickup returns
Amazon UPS dropoff points
Amazon Hub/Locker returns
Amazon USPS returns
Kohl’s Amazon returns
Image: Kohl's.com

is quick and easy. Free, packaging-free, label-free returns are accepted at all Kohl’s locations, except for stores in Anchorage, Alaska.
Here’s how to make an Amazon return at Kohl’s:
1. Complete the steps one through three listed above.
2. At step four, select the Kohl’s Dropoff option.
3. Check your email for a QR code from Amazon. The email will also include a “Send By” deadline for making your return.

And that’s it! No need to worry about packaging or labeling your return — Kohl’s handles all of that.
Amazon UPS Store returns
Like Kohl’s, the UPS Store will pack and ship eligible Amazon returns for free — no printer or packaging required. Returns are accepted at participating UPS stores around the country.
Here’s how to make an Amazon return at The UPS Store:

Amazon UPS pickup returns
This option makes sense if you are returning an item that is particularly heavy. Unlike the previous three options, the UPS Pickup method is not free; the return shipping cost will be automatically deducted from your refund. This method also requires you to package your return yourself, though UPS does take care of labeling — so you don’t need to worry about printing any shipping labels.

2. At step four, select the UPS Pickup option.

7. Take the package to your nearest
UPS dop-off point

Amazon U.S. Postal Service returns
Amazon also allows you to send your return via the U.S. Postal Service or a carrier of your choice. But be forewarned: Because these returns are not insured are traceable, this method is not advisable for returns valued over $150.
The process for making a return through the U.S. Postal Service or another carrier is a little different than the previous methods. This option requires you to handle packaging and labeling yourself, though Amazon covers the cost of postage.

| Readable Markdown | Once upon a time, making returns was a major hassle.

Leading the way in the move towards frictionless returns is tech giant [Amazon](https://www.offers.com/amazon/), which offers [free, super-simple returns on millions of products](https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=GKM69DUUYKQWKWX7).
In this guide, we’re going to walk you through the process of making a free Amazon return, step by step. We’re also going to break down the eight ways you can make an Amazon return so you can decide which one is best for you.
## **How to make a free Amazon return**
First, make sure your purchase is eligible to be returned. To be eligible for free return service, items must weigh under 50 pounds and be in new, unused condition. In most cases, returns must be initiated within 30 days of purchase, and will be refunded within three to five days after receipt.
Here is how to start a free Amazon return, step by step:
**Step one: Select the item you want to return.** Log in to your Amazon account and go to [Your Orders](https://www.amazon.com/gp/css/order-history). Find the order and hit the “Return or Replace Items” button. Check off the box next to the item you want to return.

**Step two: Select a reason for the return.** After checking off the item you want to return, a drop-down menu will appear.
Use the drop-down menu to select a reason for your return. You can choose from the following responses:
- Inaccurate website description.
- Product and shipping box both damaged.
- Item defective or doesn’t work.
- Better price available.
- Item arrived too late.
- Bought by mistake.
- Wrong item was sent.
- Received extra item I didn’t buy (no refund needed).
- No longer needed.

**Step three: Choose how to receive your refund.** Next, you’ll be asked to choose how to receive your refund. You typically have two options:
- *Refund to your Amazon account balance.* With this option, you will be refunded with a gift card balance on your Amazon account. Amazon typically sends you the credit within two to four hours after receiving your return.
- *Refund to your in your original payment method.* With this option, you will be refunded the cost of the item in your original payment method.
**Step four: Choose your return method.** Finally, it’s time to choose how to send back your return. We’ll walk you through all the different ways you can return your item to Amazon in the next section.
## **8 different ways to return your item to Amazon**
You made it to step four: choosing how to deliver your item back to Amazon. To help you choose the best method for your needs, we’ve broken down all eight ways you can return an item to Amazon below. Keep in mind, the options available to you may vary depending on the product you are returning.
