Meta TitleNuuly vs. Rent the Runway: Battle of the Clothing Rental Services | Reviews by Wirecutter
Meta DescriptionRent the Runway is perfect for designer fiends, fancy-event fans, and office enthusiasts, but Nuuly takes the cake for everyday wear, variety, and inclusivity.

My Notes app is overflowing with half-finished lists that never earn a second look, such as aspirational meal-prepping plans or need-to-watch movies, but there’s one list that I revisit like clockwork: “Clothes I Want to Buy.” I’m a style writer, so as you may guess, it’s quite lengthy. Some entries are specific—a just-dropped top from a brand I love, for example. But more often, they’re vague: a fitted gray cardigan, parachute pants for hiking, a cozy black puffer jacket, and the like. Sometimes it’s for special occasions, such as “a midi dress for so-and-so’s wedding” or “a swimsuit cover-up for Mexico.” In the past, I’d stress over finding the perfect piece to check each box, endure countless trips to the post office to return ill-fitting items, and end up lighter in both cash and spirits. After all, shopping for worthwhile clothes means allowing time and money for trial and error, which I don’t always have. This tumultuous cycle came to a screeching halt in August 2023 when I joined Nuuly’s clothing-rental service after hearing about it on TikTok—a modern word-of-mouth recommendation. I had previously and briefly browsed the website of Rent the Runway, another popular clothing-rental service, but I quickly realized that if I loved a piece I rented, I couldn’t afford to buy the designer pieces it offered, even with a discount. Nuuly, on the other hand, had prices well within my reach, both for renting and purchasing. That’s when I decided to make it official with Nuuly and signed up for a monthly subscription. Over the past 16 months, I’ve rented more than 95 pieces from Nuuly, including that fitted gray cardigan, those parachute pants for hiking, and a very cozy black puffer, along with plenty of one-off dresses for events and vacations. Since I started renting clothes, it’s been a game-changer financially. I’ve completely stopped impulse-buying and gained the freedom to experiment with new styles and trends with lower stakes. In a way, the monthly rental fee acts as a built-in budget, which is great for anyone who struggles with overconsumption when it comes to clothing. But during this time, family, friends, and colleagues have been pestering me repeatedly with one especially valid question: Which is better, Nuuly or Rent the Runway? I’ve wondered the same myself. So I, along with three other Wirecutter staffers, put the two services head-to-head.

She’s tested over 100 facial moisturizers (and counting). [![](https://d34mvw1if3ud0g.cloudfront.net/68661/Nuuly-6-Items-per-Month-Plan_20250418-053655_full.jpeg)](https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/out/link/68661/213439/4/209645?merchant=Nuuly) ## [Great for all styles, trends, and casual clothes](https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/out/link/68661/213439/4/209645?merchant=Nuuly "Great for all styles, trends, and casual clothes") ### [Nuuly 6 Items per Month Plan](https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/out/link/68661/213439/4/209645?merchant=Nuuly "Nuuly 6 Items per Month Plan") Rent six items a month for \$98. Pick from casual clothes, dresses for special occasions, workwear, athleisure, and more. [Buy from Nuuly](https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/out/link/68661/213439/4/209645?merchant=Nuuly) [![](https://d34mvw1if3ud0g.cloudfront.net/68662/Rent-the-Runway-10-Items-per-Month-Plan_20250418-053655_full.jpeg)](https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/out/link/68662/213440/4/209646?merchant=Rent%20the%20Runway) ## [A fancier choice for workwear and occasions](https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/out/link/68662/213440/4/209646?merchant=Rent%20the%20Runway "A fancier choice for workwear and occasions") ### [Rent the Runway 10 Items per Month Plan](https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/out/link/68662/213440/4/209646?merchant=Rent%20the%20Runway "Rent the Runway 10 Items per Month Plan") Rent 10 items a month, split into two shipments, for \$144, or rent five items a month for \$119. The selection focuses on designer workwear, vacationwear, and dresses for formal events. [Buy from Rent the Runway](https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/out/link/68662/213440/4/209646?merchant=Rent%20the%20Runway) That’s when I decided to make it official with Nuuly and signed up for a monthly subscription. Over the past 16 months, I’ve rented more than 95 pieces from Nuuly, including that fitted gray cardigan, those parachute pants for hiking, and a *very* cozy black puffer, along with plenty of one-off dresses for events and vacations. ### Get today’s recommendation Expert advice. Very good deals. Email Address ## Why we tested these two services These two services may be a dream come true for clothing enthusiasts, but they couldn’t be more different. Brand representatives say that Rent the Runway strives to fill the needs of customers who align more with sophisticated, traditionally feminine, and not overtly sexy clothing styles. Nuuly’s goal, on the other hand, is to include a wide range of styles in its inventory, which our testers found to include edgy, bohemian, pretty, and more. Even though Rent the Runway arguably created the clothing-rental space, Nuuly has overtaken it in subscribers. In five years, Nuuly, from its debut in 2019 to November 2024, has grown to reach more than 300,000 active subscribers. Rent the Runway, which launched back in 2009, serves 131,000 active subscribers as of January 2025. Although both services promise wardrobe refreshes, we found in our testing that they’re not exactly interchangeable. So, spoiler alert: There’s no clear winner. Instead, we’ve put together a review packed with tester feedback to help you decide which service—if either—is right for you. ## How the services work ![A screenshot of the subscription plans offered by Rent the Runway.](https://cdn.thewirecutter.com/wp-content/media/2025/01/TOT-RENT-THE-RUNWAY-NUULY-2048px-1032-Large.jpg?auto=webp&quality=75&width=1024) Subscription options for Rent the Runway range from \$94 a month to \$144 a month (after the first month). NYT Wirecutter Subscription options for Rent the Runway range from \$94 a month to \$144 a month (after the first month). Rent the Runway ![A screenshot of the subscription plans offered by Rent the Runway.](https://cdn.thewirecutter.com/wp-content/media/2025/01/TOT-RENT-THE-RUNWAY-NUULY-2048px-1032-Large.jpg?auto=webp&quality=60&crop=3:2&width=150) ![A screenshot of the subscription option from Nuuly.](https://cdn.thewirecutter.com/wp-content/media/2025/01/TOT-RENT-THE-RUNWAY-NUULY-2048px-1033-LARGE.jpg?auto=webp&quality=60&crop=3:2&width=150) ![A screenshot comparing the details included with the different rental plan options from Rent the Runway and Nuuly.](https://cdn.thewirecutter.com/wp-content/media/2025/01/TOT-RENT-THE-RUNWAY-NUULY-2048px-PlanComparison-LARGE.jpg?auto=webp&quality=60&crop=3:2&width=150) Rent the Runway has three subscription plans. The most affordable option, which costs \$94 per month, includes one shipment of five clothing items that you choose from a limited selection of its inventory, also referred to as “closet access.” The next option costs \$119 a month for five items as well, but you get full closet access. In the third, and most expansive option, you pay \$144 a month to get two shipments of five items each and full closet access, with the ability to add extra items for \$31 each. All of the subscription plans offer a discounted rate for your first month as well. At the end of the month, you return the items via drop-off at your local UPS store or home pickup and then start filling your next shipment online or in the Rent the Runway app. If you fall in love with a piece, you can keep it for as long as you want; it simply continues to count as one of your five items. Nuuly has only one subscription option, which costs \$98 a month. This gives you six items (though you can add up to four bonus items for \$20 each), and you must return all of them by the end of the month. You can choose to hold on to your full bag for two months in a row, but you cannot selectively keep some items and send others back unless you purchase the items you want to keep. That means you can’t hold on to items you love, so if you want to rent a specific piece two months in a row, you have to send it back and then reorder it with your next bag. When your month is up, you drop off your bag at your local UPS store (no at-home pickup) and start filling your next bag online or in the Nuuly app. Both services include a prepaid shipping label that you stick on the front of your bag. From the get-go, the most striking difference between the two services lies in the prestige of the brands they offer, and consequently, the pricing of the clothing (both the retail prices and the discounted prices should you choose to purchase the item). Rent the Runway features a high-end selection, with designer names such as Phillip Lim, Proenza Schouler, JW Anderson, and more. In contrast, Nuuly is owned by URBN and offers a diverse range of items from sibling brands such as Anthropologie, Free People, and Urban Outfitters. But that doesn’t mean you’re limited to those house brands; Nuuly also has popular labels such as Agolde, For Love & Lemons, and Levi’s, alongside trending, emerging brands like Oddli. ## How we tested Our testing pool consisted of four women, each with distinct style preferences and sizes. We included one plus-size tester and one petite tester, ensuring a diverse range of experiences. All of our testers used both Nuuly and Rent the Runway for at least one month, with most opting for a minimum of three months. Additionally, three of our four testers had at least a year of personal experience with one of the services, giving us a thorough understanding of what each platform offers over an extended period of time. We tested for style preference and variety, size inclusivity, and customer experience. ## Round 1: Style preferences and variety ![A person wearing a pink jumpsuit from Nuuly.](https://cdn.thewirecutter.com/wp-content/media/2025/01/TOT-RENT-THE-RUNWAY-NUULY-2048px-6980.jpg?auto=webp&quality=75&width=1024) Wirecutter manager of editorial operations Jessie Mohkami wearing the Rachel Antonoff Sal Collard Jumpsuit from Nuuly. Our testers agreed that Nuuly shines with its broader range of styles, catering to every taste from edgy and trendy to minimalist and bohemian aesthetics. In contrast, Rent the Runway skews more business-oriented, with a polished vibe that leans heavily into workwear, occasionwear, and accessories. Let’s say, for example, you’re looking for a leather jacket on both platforms. On Rent the Runway, this search produces leather blazers, fitted silhouettes, and jackets with features such as collars, waist cinching, and waist ties. The options lean toward a polished aesthetic and lean away from more casual looks. Nuuly’s leather-jacket selection offers some similar styles in addition to more casual and trendy silhouettes like oversize leather bomber jackets, moto-style jackets, and leather shirt jackets. Nuuly also stands out for its diverse clothing options, as it offers a wider selection of athleisure, loungewear, and outdoor-adventure gear, giving you a versatile wardrobe that goes far beyond the 9-to-5. ![A person wearing a white button down shirt rented from Rent the Runway.](https://cdn.thewirecutter.com/wp-content/media/2025/01/TOT-RENT-THE-RUNWAY-NUULY-2048px-1035.jpg?auto=webp&quality=75&width=1024) Tester Hali Potters wearing the Ganni Collared Button Down from Rent the Runway. She emphasizes that Rent the Runway isn’t targeting customers with edgy or bohemian styles, but rather those seeking a sophisticated, feminine wardrobe. In this sense, the company’s offerings are more narrowly tailored compared with Nuuly’s broader range. Whereas Nuuly may excel in style variety and clothing categories, Rent the Runway stands out with a bonus category: accessories. Bags, jewelry, and other extras are available to rent and buy, a feature our testers loved. Getting to rent an \$800 bag from A.P.C. for special occasions or experimenting with a pair of statement sunglasses from Marc Jacobs before purchasing them is a major plus, and one area in which Nuuly falls short, especially for people who view accessories as an essential part of their closet. ![A person wearing black sunglasses rented from Rent the Runway.](https://cdn.thewirecutter.com/wp-content/media/2025/01/TOT-RENT-THE-RUNWAY-NUULY-2048px-6800.jpg?auto=webp&quality=75&width=1024) Hannah Frye wearing the Marc Jacobs Sunglasses from Rent the Runway. For instance, a sweater that Jessie rented from Nuuly had noticeable pilling, and I’ve received items that seemed more faded or worn-in compared with the newer-looking pieces from Rent the Runway. However, I’ve also rented countless items that came brand-new with the tag still on. Nuuly may have had some variability in quality in our testing, but it offers a clear advantage in affordability, especially for people who are looking to build their wardrobe by purchasing items they rent. The starting prices are lower, and with the additional discount on purchases, the overall cost is reduced further. Additionally, Nuuly’s Thrift Shop provides significant markdowns on items that have been retired from rental rotation, and they can be shipped directly to you in your next bag. If you have a well-established staple wardrobe at home already and want to rent high-quality designer items, Rent the Runway is the obvious choice. But if you’re on a budget, Nuuly is a great way to build out a wardrobe. ## Round 3: Sizing accommodation and inclusivity ![A screenshot of available clothing items available to rent on Nuuly.](https://cdn.thewirecutter.com/wp-content/media/2025/01/TOT-RENT-THE-RUNWAY-NUULY-2048px-1037.jpg?auto=webp&quality=75&width=1024) When I filtered results in the Nuuly app for size 20 jeans, including all options, not just those available now, I was offered 163 pairs in a range of styles and washes. Nuuly ![A screenshot of available clothing items to rent from Rent the Runway.](https://cdn.thewirecutter.com/wp-content/media/2025/01/TOT-RENT-THE-RUNWAY-NUULY-2048px-1034.jpg?auto=webp&quality=75&width=1024) When I applied the same filter in the Rent the Runway app to see all available options rather than just items available now, I found only two items. Rent the Runway When I filtered results in the Nuuly app for size 20 jeans, including all options, not just those available now, I was offered 163 pairs in a range of styles and washes. Nuuly ![A screenshot of available clothing items available to rent on Nuuly.](https://cdn.thewirecutter.com/wp-content/media/2025/01/TOT-RENT-THE-RUNWAY-NUULY-2048px-1037.jpg?auto=webp&quality=60&crop=3:2&width=150) ![A screenshot of available clothing items to rent from Rent the Runway.](https://cdn.thewirecutter.com/wp-content/media/2025/01/TOT-RENT-THE-RUNWAY-NUULY-2048px-1034.jpg?auto=webp&quality=60&crop=3:2&width=150) Our petite and plus-size testers found well-fitting clothes more easily with Nuuly than with Rent the Runway. Although both services offer size filters, Nuuly provided a broader selection of options across the categories our testers looked at and included more clothing specifically designed for plus-size and petite frames, rather than simply offering plus-friendly or petite-friendly options, which aren’t always made with mindful proportions and tailoring for plus or petite shoppers. This attention to fit made a noticeable difference in our testers’ overall experience. ![A screenshot of the rent by length option on Nuuly.](https://cdn.thewirecutter.com/wp-content/media/2025/01/TOT-RENT-THE-RUNWAY-NUULY-2048px-1038-1024x683.jpg) With Nuuly, you can filter by inseam when shopping for pants, which can help you avoid renting pants that are way too long or way too short. Nuuly Additionally, Nuuly has expanded its offerings to include adaptive clothing from brands such as Anthropologie, Maeve, and Pilcro. These pieces are specifically designed to make dressing easier for people with disabilities, further broadening what Nuuly says is its commitment to inclusivity and accessibility. ![A screenshot of adaptive clothing items available to rent from Nuuly.](https://cdn.thewirecutter.com/wp-content/media/2025/01/TOT-RENT-THE-RUNWAY-NUULY-2048px-8139.jpg?auto=webp&quality=75&width=1024) Just a few of Nuuly’s options for adaptive clothing. Nuuly Both services offer maternity clothing, but each has a distinct focus. Rent the Runway provides a strong selection of maternity workwear, catering to professional needs, which is helpful for expecting parents who work in-office. Nuuly, on the other hand, offers a wider variety, blending maternity workwear with more casual, comfortable options such as loungewear and athleisure, giving expectant parents greater flexibility in their wardrobe choices. ![A screenshot of available maternity wear items available to rent from Nuuly.](https://cdn.thewirecutter.com/wp-content/media/2025/01/TOT-RENT-THE-RUNWAY-NUULY-2048px-8138.jpg?auto=webp&quality=75&width=1024) A few examples of Nuuly’s maternity wear, including everyday-outfit essentials such as denim, occasion dresses, and athleisure. Although Hyman mentioned in an interview that Rent the Runway encourages its partners to expand sizing options for rentals where possible, our testers struggled to find the sweet spot where clothes both came in their size and aligned with their personal style. As a result, our petite and plus-size testers agreed that they wouldn’t spend their own money on Rent the Runway after completing the trial. Hyman acknowledged that Rent the Runway is working to improve in this area. For now, however, Nuuly takes the lead in inclusivity. ## Round 4: User experience and subscription models Although three of our four testers preferred the user experience in Nuuly’s app, including the photos and reviews of rentable items, Rent the Runway excels in subscription options and logistics. Rent the Runway’s twice-monthly delivery-plan option allows you to return pieces after a single wear or send back ill-fitting items, with the added convenience of scheduling a free pickup for returns in select zip codes. Most importantly, you can keep select items from your bag for as long as you’d like, so you have more time with the rentals you’re considering purchasing or simply want to hold on to for a few more months; Nuuly lacks this feature, and as a result re-renting items can feel redundant. This Rent the Runway feature is especially handy for seasonal items, such as coats. For example, one tester who has continued their subscription to Rent the Runway rented a winter jacket in October and plans to keep it until at least April. Rent the Runway also offers cross-shipping, or the ability to receive new items before returning your old ones, which ensures that you’re never without rentals. In contrast, Nuuly’s return system requires you to wait until your bag is scanned before ordering new items, leaving you without rental clothes for a few days. The lack of flexibility in extending return dates with Nuuly can cause you to pause your rental or return it prematurely to accommodate travel, which can be frustrating. Rent the Runway also provides personal stylists for free consultations when you subscribe. We tried this service, and while we unanimously loved the process, only one tester ended up liking most of the items their stylist chose. Still, it’s a time-saver for anyone who’s overwhelmed by the inventory. ## Both are good, but they’re different. Here’s how to choose. ![A screenshot list comparing the types of clothing and services provided by Rent the Runway and Nuuly.]() NYT Wirecutter Alas, we ended with a tie. While three of our four testers preferred Nuuly for its style variety and size inclusivity, neither service is universally superior. Each has unique strengths, and we’ve highlighted in the table above what makes them stand out so that you can choose the one that better aligns with your needs. There’s plenty of overlap, too. Both services offer discounted prices for purchases, plenty of workwear, a vast selection of dresses, and maternity wear. The ethos remains the same: Try before you buy. ## A note on sustainability Rental services are often touted as a sustainable shopping alternative, but their true environmental impact hinges on your purchasing habits. If you’re accustomed to fast fashion—frequent, fleeting buys that you quickly discard—renting can indeed be a greener choice. But if your wardrobe is already built on durable, high-quality pieces, the frequent cycle of cleaning, packaging, and shipping involved in rentals may undermine their eco-friendly appeal. Ann Cantrell, an associate professor in the FIT Fashion Business Management program, specializing in economic and environmental sustainability, said that the environmental footprint of rental services becomes more significant with regular use. Renting sparingly, however, may be a sensible compromise for someone looking to make more sustainable shopping choices. Katie Okamoto, Wirecutter’s editor of sustainability coverage, agrees that rentals can be especially helpful during life transitions—whether you’re pregnant, moving to a new climate, or in need of something for a special occasion like a wedding. Cantrell also suggests a simple shift in mindset: Instead of renting to return, think about renting with the option to buy. “If you’re wearing something more than six or eight times, you should just buy it,” she says. This makes sense not only for the planet but also for your wallet, as many rental items are available at a fraction of the retail price—saving you money while keeping your closet fresh. Even though both services have their pros and cons, clothing rental has transformed my approach to fashion, and it might do the same for you. That “Clothes I Want to Buy” list no longer looms large, since I know that I can try pieces first and purchase them at a discount when the time is right. Thanks to clothing-rental services, my closet is no longer a graveyard for one-wear wonders and regrettable impulse buys. *This article was edited by Hannah Rimm and Maxine Builder.* ## Meet your guide ![](https://cdn.thewirecutter.com/wp-content/media/2024/10/hannah-frye.jpg?auto=webp&quality=60&crop=1:1&width=100) Hannah Frye What I Cover I am a Brooklyn-based beauty and style writer covering trending products along with related news and advice from experts. ## Further reading - [![Eight different white sneakers recommended in this guide on display in front of a brown background.](https://cdn.thewirecutter.com/wp-content/media/2025/06/BEST-WHITE-SNEAKERS-SUB-2048px-3865-3x2-1.jpg?auto=webp&quality=60&crop=3:2&width=90)](https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-white-sneakers/) ### [Stylish (and Comfy) White Sneakers We’ll Be Wearing All Year](https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-white-sneakers/) by Zoe Vanderweide A great pair of white sneakers should look as good as it feels.
