detected gravitational waves
from colliding black holes and have tracked distant stars swinging past Sagittarius A*:

The network of telescopes was sensitive enough to observe daily variations in the bright ring around the M87 black hole.

The jet of particles streaming from M87 [was discovered in 1918](https://archive.nytimes.com/www.nytimes.com/library/national/science/071100sci-nasa-hubble.1.jpg.html), and radio waves emanating from the center of our galaxy [were first detected in 1931](https://www.nytimes.com/1981/11/17/science/radio-astronomy-50-years-old-moves-toward-a-new-frontier.html).
More recently, astronomers have [detected gravitational waves](https://www.nytimes.com/2016/02/12/science/ligo-gravitational-waves-black-holes-einstein.html) from colliding black holes and have tracked distant stars swinging past Sagittarius A\*:
The Event Horizon Telescope
Eight radio telescopes around the world synchronized their observations of the black holes over 10 days in April, 2017.
The network of telescopes was sensitive enough to observe daily variations in the bright ring around the M87 black hole.
