The Los Angeles Dodgers won the 2020 World Series, breaking a drought that had stretched back to 1988. They have a chance to repeat as champions for the first time in franchise history. Credit... Sean M. Haffey/Getty Images Published March 29, 2021 Updated Oct. 29, 2021 In baseball these days, it’s all about perception and percentage. As the country stirs cautiously back to normal life, each ballpark comes with its own set of pandemic restrictions: 12 percent capacity at Fenway Park in Boston, 25 percent capacity at Marlins Park in Miami — even (gulp) 100 percent capacity for the opener at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. Interpreting those figures is up to you. If you root for the World Series champions, are you happy that Dodger Stadium will be partially open for fans? Or are you bummed that only 20 percent of a typical crowd will be allowed to witness Clayton Kershaw finally slipping on a championship ring? In that conflicted spirit, here’s a look around the majors through two perspectives — a ballpark half full, you might say, and a ballpark half empty — with a telling number for each. M.L.B. began cracking down on steroids in 2003. Even so, since the start of 2016, hitters have been **mashing home runs in record numbers**. The high mark for a season: 6,776 in 2019. Exciting, right? ## Old Ballgame, New Ball ![James Wagner](https://static01.nyt.com/images/2018/06/13/multimedia/author-james-wagner/author-james-wagner-thumbStandard-v4.png?quality=75&auto=webp) James Wagner⚾️ Reporting on Major League Baseball David J. Phillip/Associated Press Not for pitchers. Justin Verlander, a two-time Cy Young Award winner, groaned that the league was **spring-loading the ball**. M.L.B. denied it, saying there would always be inconsistency because balls were made largely by hand. ## Old Ballgame, New Ball ![James Wagner](https://static01.nyt.com/images/2018/06/13/multimedia/author-james-wagner/author-james-wagner-thumbStandard-v4.png?quality=75&auto=webp) James Wagner⚾️ Reporting on Major League Baseball Chris O'Meara/Associated Press Scientists hired by M.L.B. cited two main culprits for the increase in homers: More players were swinging for the fences, and slightly lower seams and other factors were making the ball fly farther. Also, the average ball was **a tiny bit bouncier** than it had been. ## Old Ballgame, New Ball ![James Wagner](https://static01.nyt.com/images/2018/06/13/multimedia/author-james-wagner/author-james-wagner-thumbStandard-v4.png?quality=75&auto=webp) James Wagner⚾️ Reporting on Major League Baseball Jasen Vinlove/USA Today Sports, via Reuters To make the ball less bouncy, the manufacturer, Rawlings, loosened the tension on the first of three wool windings within it. The result, M.L.B. said: **a ball that weighed 2.8 grams less** and traveled, on average, a couple of feet fewer on a 375-foot fly ball. ## Old Ballgame, New Ball ![James Wagner](https://static01.nyt.com/images/2018/06/13/multimedia/author-james-wagner/author-james-wagner-thumbStandard-v4.png?quality=75&auto=webp) James Wagner⚾️ Reporting on Major League Baseball Kim Klement/USA Today Sports, via Reuters Home runs are up slightly this spring, but Gerrit Cole, the Yankees’ ace, said that the balls felt more consistent, and San Diego Padres pitcher Blake Snell noticed **thicker laces and less carry**. “Definitely a different ball,” he said. ## Old Ballgame, New Ball ![James Wagner](https://static01.nyt.com/images/2018/06/13/multimedia/author-james-wagner/author-james-wagner-thumbStandard-v4.png?quality=75&auto=webp) James Wagner⚾️ Reporting on Major League Baseball I’ll be counting home runs — and player complaints — all season.
