June 13, 2016 ORLANDO, Fla. — The gunman who went on a shooting rampage in a popular gay nightclub here shot nearly all of his victims in the first stages of the assault, then was utterly “cool and calm” while he talked by phone to law enforcement officials about further carnage, claimed allegiance to the Islamic State and praised the Boston Marathon bombers, officials said on Monday. As officials offered new details about the worst mass shooting in American history, which left 49 people dead and 53 wounded, Chief John Mina of the Orlando Police Department said that the gunman, Omar Mateen, 29, told police negotiators — falsely, they later discovered — that he had explosives and accomplices at Pulse nightclub. Mr. Mateen eventually made comments persuading them that “there would be an imminent loss of life,” Chief Mina said, prompting the chief to end a three-hour standoff and order the assault that killed Mr. Mateen and freed dozens of people trapped in the club. Lizette Alvarez reported from Orlando, and Christine Hauser and Richard PĂ©rez-Peña from New York. Reporting was contributed by Wendy Thompson and Les Neuhaus from Orlando; Alan Blinder from Fort Pierce, Fla.; Rukmini Callimachi from Paris; Eric Lichtblau and Eric Schmitt from Washington; and Steve Kenny, Richard A. Oppel Jr., Rick Rojas and Daniel Victor from New York. As officials offered new details about the [worst mass shooting](https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/us/mass-shootings-timeline.html) in American history, which left 49 people dead and 53 wounded, Chief John Mina of the Orlando Police Department said that the gunman, Omar Mateen, 29, told police negotiators — falsely, they later discovered — that he had explosives and accomplices at Pulse nightclub. ## Related Content [Orlando Shooting](https://www.nytimes.com/news-event/2016-orlando-shooting) Complete coverage of the shootings at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Fla., the worst mass shooting in U.S. history. - ![A billboard honored the victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, Fla.](https://static01.nyt.com/images/2016/06/21/us/21land7/21land7-thumbLarge.jpg?quality=75&auto=webp&disable=upscale) Todd Heisler/The New York Times - ![F.B.I. counterterrorism investigators and local authorities in Orlando continue to try to piece together the gunman’s motivations for the June 12 massacre.](https://static01.nyt.com/images/2016/06/21/us/21shootercalls/21shootercalls-thumbLarge.jpg?quality=75&auto=webp&disable=upscale) Image by David Goldman/Associated Press - via Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services [More in U.S.](https://www.nytimes.com/section/us) - ![On certain Boeing 737 and Airbus A321 jets, row 11 offers a seat sold as a window view that shows, instead, a wall.
