The NYC Health Department acknowledges this lack of representation in the data is inequitable, and we are committed to developing methods for ensuring more inclusive, equitable representation in the future. Emergency department data can provide a timely view of changes in respiratory virus spread and care-seeking. The NYC Health Department examines visits to emergency departments with respiratory illness diagnoses. These can include COVID-19, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus, general respiratory complaints such as cough, or illnesses such as pneumonia.
