President Donald Trump was targeted by protesters during a rare venture out into Washington D.C. for a cabinet dinner. In footage seen by Newsweek, activists approach the president as he walks into Joe's Seafood, Prime Steak & Stone Crab on Tuesday evening with Vice President JD Vance , Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth . The protesters then chant that Trump was "the Hitler of our time" and shout: "Free Palestine!" Newsweek contacted the White House via email outside of normal working hours for more information. Why It Matters The president has been promoting the effects of his crackdown in the nation's capital, launched on August 11 with the declaration of a public-safety emergency because of crime, and federalizing of the city police force along with deployment of National Guard troops. Trump, who seldom dines out when in the capital, used the night out for dinner to highlight his campaign to rid the district's streets of crime. In addition to Washington, Trump deployed the National Guard to Los Angeles in June and has threatened to send troops to other Democratic cities including Baltimore, New Orleans and Chicago—where state and local authorities are already bracing for operations to sharply increase immigration enforcement. What To Know The protesters were from an activist group called CODEPINK , which describes itself as a "feminist grassroots organization working to support peace & human rights & end U.S. wars & militarism." In the video, Trump appears to listen to the protesters for a few moments, before motioning to security in the restaurant to remove them from the building, which is just a block away from the White House. "We have a safe city now, can you imagine?" Trump said to cheers from some diners in the restaurant as he walked in. "Enjoy yourselves. You won't be mugged going home," he said, as one woman called out: "Thank you." I respect the hell out of them for confronting Trump!!!" Medea Benjamin , one of the cofounders of CODEPINK, said: "While Trump, JD Vance, Marco Rubio, Pete Hegseth and others feasted at a steakhouse, we stood our ground and told them the truth: Free DC. Free Palestine. Trump is the Hitler of our time. "Two years into genocide, Gaza is under evacuation orders, Puerto Rico and Venezuela are in the crosshairs, and the Pentagon openly calls itself the Department of War. "Trump looked us in the eyes, we made sure he will never dine in peace while communities are under siege." What People Are Saying President Donald Trump said on Monday: "We are a safe city. You can walk to a restaurant, you can walk to the White House, if you work there, you can walk to the Capitol." Conservative journalist Nick Sorto said on X : "MASSIVE cheers from patriots in Washington, DC as President Trump walks into a restaurant with members of his cabinet. DC residents are LOVING how safe the city has become." What Happens Next The Trump administration appears to have Chicago in its sights for the next phase of its crackdown. The president on September 6 posted a parody image from the classic Vietnam War film Apocalypse Now, featuring a ball of flames as helicopters zoom over the lakefront and skyline of Chicago, the nation's third-most populous city.

President [Donald Trump](https://www.newsweek.com/topic/donald-trump) was targeted by protesters during a rare venture out into Washington D.C. for a cabinet dinner. In footage seen by *Newsweek,* activists approach the president as he walks into Joe's Seafood, Prime Steak & Stone Crab on Tuesday evening with Vice President [JD Vance](https://www.newsweek.com/topic/jd-vance), Secretary of State [Marco Rubio](https://www.newsweek.com/topic/marco-rubio) and Defense Secretary [Pete Hegseth](https://www.newsweek.com/topic/pete-hegseth). The protesters then chant that Trump was "the Hitler of our time" and shout: "Free Palestine!" *Newsweek* contacted the White House via email outside of normal working hours for more information. ## Why It Matters The president has been promoting the effects of his crackdown in the nation's capital, launched on August 11 with the declaration of a public-safety emergency because of crime, and federalizing of the city police force along with deployment of National Guard troops. ## What To Know The protesters were from an activist group called [CODEPINK](https://x.com/codepink/status/1965570988827181181), which describes itself as a "feminist grassroots organization working to support peace & human rights & end U.S. wars & militarism." In the video, Trump appears to listen to the protesters for a few moments, before motioning to security in the restaurant to remove them from the building, which is just a block away from the White House. "We have a safe city now, can you imagine?" Trump said to cheers from some diners in the restaurant as he walked in. "Enjoy yourselves. You won't be mugged going home," he said, as one woman called out: "Thank you." I respect the hell out of them for confronting Trump!!!" [Medea Benjamin](https://x.com/medeabenjamin/status/1965581307330588953), one of the cofounders of CODEPINK, said: "While Trump, JD Vance, Marco Rubio, Pete Hegseth and others feasted at a steakhouse, we stood our ground and told them the truth: Free DC. Free Palestine. Trump is the Hitler of our time. "Two years into genocide, Gaza is under evacuation orders, Puerto Rico and Venezuela are in the crosshairs, and the [Pentagon](https://www.newsweek.com/topic/pentagon) openly calls itself the Department of War. "Trump looked us in the eyes, we made sure he will never dine in peace while communities are under siege." ## What People Are Saying **President Donald Trump said on Monday:** "We are a safe city. You can walk to a restaurant, you can walk to the White House, if you work there, you can walk to the Capitol." **Conservative journalist Nick Sorto [said on X](https://x.com/nicksortor/status/1965560419478897071):** "MASSIVE cheers from patriots in Washington, DC as President Trump walks into a restaurant with members of his cabinet. DC residents are LOVING how safe the city has become." ## What Happens Next The Trump administration appears to have Chicago in its sights for the next phase of its crackdown. The president on September 6 posted a parody image from the classic Vietnam War film Apocalypse Now, featuring a ball of flames as helicopters zoom over the lakefront and skyline of Chicago, the nation's third-most populous city.
