January 20 marks 365 days since the inauguration of President Donald Trump , who returned to the White House for his second term exactly a year ago. To say the least, it's been anything but a quiet year in American politics . From the recent capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, to declarations that the U.S. will take control of Greenland , to the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, there has barely been a day where Trump and his administration haven't made headline news. Trump began the year with a throng of executive orders, including the downsizing of the federal government that led to the loss of thousands of jobs, purging diversity and inclusion programs, and slashing humanitarian aid sent worldwide. Since then, he has also sparked trade wars by imposing tariffs on imports from many countries, and enacted a sweeping tax and spending cut package. Trump's key campaign promise to reduce illegal immigration has been one of his most controversial. In recent weeks, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in Minnesota led to the death of 37-year-old American citizen Renee Nicole Good, who was shot dead by an agent. Her death has sparked widespread protests across the state. It's been an explosive year for Trump's political nearest and dearest too. Fallouts with the likes of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, Georgia Representative and once-MAGA faithful Marjorie Taylor-Greene, and a brief spat with Elon Musk all drew significant attention in his first year back in the Oval Office. Nationwide, as the first year of his second term comes to a close, Trump has an overall disapproval rate of 56 percent, and an approval rate of 40 percent, according to data compiled by Civiqs. On January 20, 2025, these respectively sat at 51 and 45 percent. State-By-State Trump's strongest support is concentrated in deeply Republican and rural states, Civiqs reports. Wyoming (65 percent) and West Virginia (61 percent) show the highest approval ratings, followed closely by Oklahoma (59 percent), Idaho (58 percent), North Dakota (57 percent), Arkansas (56 percent) and Montana (55 percent). In much of the South and Plains, approval generally meets or exceeds 50 percent. But his weakest support is found in typically blue and more urbanized states. Approval is lowest in Hawaii (20 percent), Vermont (22 percent), Maryland (25 percent), California (27 percent), Washington (28 percent), Massachusetts (28 percent) and Rhode Island (29 percent), where disapproval routinely approaches or exceeds two-thirds of respondents. These states also post some of the highest disapproval figures overall. Swing and battleground states tend to fall in between, with approval and disapproval often within single digits of each other. Florida, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Nevada, Michigan and Wisconsin all show divided electorates, with modest disapproval edges, but no overwhelming consensus. Trump's Turbulent First Year President Donald Trump’s first year back in office has been defined by rapid policy changes and frequent political flashpoints. Within weeks of his inauguration, Trump signed a series of executive orders aimed at shrinking the federal workforce, dismantling diversity and inclusion initiatives, and reducing U.S. humanitarian aid abroad. The administration also moved aggressively on trade, introducing tariffs on imports from multiple countries, reigniting global trade tensions. Immigration enforcement has been among the most contentious areas of Trump’s agenda. Recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations in Minnesota, which resulted in the death of an American citizen, sparked statewide protests and renewed debate over federal immigration tactics. Combined with clashes involving senior political figures and business leaders, the year has been marked by sustained controversy that has shaped public opinion nationwide. Sharp Divide in Support Between Red and Blue States Trump’s approval ratings show a stark partisan divide across the country. His strongest support remains concentrated in rural and reliably Republican states, where majorities approve of his performance. Wyoming and West Virginia lead the nation in approval, followed by Oklahoma, Idaho, North Dakota, Arkansas, and Montana. In much of the South and Great Plains, Trump’s approval meets or exceeds 50 percent. By contrast, the president faces overwhelming opposition in Democratic-leaning and more urbanized states. Approval drops below 30 percent in several coastal and New England states, including Hawaii, Vermont, California, Washington, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. In these states, disapproval often approaches or surpasses two-thirds of respondents, underscoring the depth of resistance to Trump’s second-term agenda. How Swing States View Trump Today Swing states continue to present a more complex and competitive picture. In states such as Florida, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Nevada, Michigan, and Wisconsin, approval and disapproval ratings remain tightly clustered, often separated by only a few percentage points. While disapproval generally holds a slight edge, no clear consensus has emerged. These closely divided states highlight the persistence of polarization heading into the second year of Trump’s term. Small shifts in public sentiment—driven by economic conditions, foreign policy developments, or domestic unrest—could significantly alter the political landscape in these key states as the administration moves forward. January 20 marks 365 days since the inauguration of President [Donald Trump](https://www.newsweek.com/topic/donald-trump), who returned to the [White House](https://www.newsweek.com/topic/white-house) for his second term exactly a year ago. To say the least, it's been [anything but a quiet year in American politics](https://www.newsweek.com/most-americans-say-trumps-first-year-back-in-office-is-a-failure-poll-11374842). From the recent capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, to declarations that the U.S. [will take control of Greenland](https://www.newsweek.com/greenland-nato-trump-live-updates-russia-denmark-china-11380114), to the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, there has barely been a day where Trump and his administration haven't made headline news. Trump's key campaign promise to reduce illegal [immigration](https://www.newsweek.com/topic/immigration) has been one of his most controversial. Nationwide, as the first year of his second term comes to a close, [Trump has an overall disapproval rate](https://www.newsweek.com/donald-trump-approval-rating-3-11380019) of 56 percent, and an approval rate of 40 percent, according to data compiled by Civiqs. On January 20, 2025, these respectively sat at 51 and 45 percent. ## State-By-State Trump's strongest support is concentrated in deeply Republican and rural states, Civiqs reports. ## Trump's Turbulent First Year President Donald Trump’s first year back in office has been defined by rapid policy changes and frequent political flashpoints. ## Sharp Divide in Support Between Red and Blue States Trump’s approval ratings show a stark partisan divide across the country. ## How Swing States View Trump Today Swing states continue to present a more complex and competitive picture. > In a polarized era, the center is dismissed as bland.
