A license plate with an interesting history has smashed local records, being sold for millions of dollars at auction. Known simply as license plate 8, the plate gets its name from being just the eighth-ever license plate issued in South Australia, back in 1906. It now has a new home, after being sold by Slattery Auctions for a jaw-dropping AU$2.3million ($1.56 million). A spokesperson for the Government of South Australia said the plate sparked a two-week "bidding frenzy" before eventually being sold. With bidding starting at AU$600,000, it was always going to go for a high price, but its eventual sale smashed the previous record from 2020, when the number 1 plate commemorating the Adelaide Grand Prix went for AU$593,000. "And the hotly contested competition to be the one to land the iconic 8 did not disappoint." License 8 The license plate was among the first to be issued in South Australia in 1906. It shattered local auction records. | Government of South Australia/Supplied It is the first single-digit number plate to be sold by the South Australia government since 1985, when plates 3, 6, and 9 were sold. At the time, the plates were sold for AU$11,000, AU$6,500 and AU$7,000, respectively. Plate number 8 was sold by Slattery Auctions of South Australia, with Koutsantonis thanking the third-party auctioneer "for their fantastic work running this process to ensure a fair and exciting auction". He congratulated the new owners of 8 for now having "incredibly rare and exclusive pieces of South Australian automotive history in their hands." Rare or unique items can sometimes go for incredible prices at public auctions: in August, an auction full of Steve Jobs and Apple memorabilia made close to $1 million . And earlier that same month, more than 15 cars sold for over $3 million each at the annual Monterey Car Week gathering in California.
