| Boilerpipe Text | "Hazardous" winter weather could dump up to 18 inches of snow across three states, the National Weather Service (NWS) has warned, creating dangerous travel conditions and sharply reduced visibility.
Alerts include winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories spanning large parts of
Alaska
, northern
New York
, and
Vermont
, with
impacts ranging from heavy snowfall
and blowing
snow
to slippery roads
during peak travel hours.
Alaska
Alaska is facing the most significant impacts, with
winter storm
warnings and advisories in effect across southeast Alaska, southcentral Alaska and parts of the western and northern coasts.
Turnagain Pass, Portage and Girdwood could see 6 to 12 inches of snow, with localized totals reaching up to 18 inches before advisories expire early Friday morning, according to the
NWS
in Anchorage.
In southeast Alaska, including Juneau, Sitka, Skagway, Haines, Yakutat and Petersburg, an additional 3 to 7 inches of snow is expected, with visibility dropping below 1 mile during heavier snow showers.

The NWS says: "Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact commutes."
Across coastal and western areas such as the Bering Strait Coast, Kuskokwim Delta Coast and Norton Sound, blowing snow and wind gusts up to 45 mph could create nearâblizzard conditions, prompting officials to urge travelers to carry emergency supplies and avoid unnecessary travel.
New York
Northern New York is under a winter weather advisory from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday, affecting areas including St. Lawrence County, and communities such as Potsdam, Massena, Saranac Lake and Lake Placid.
Snow totals are forecast to range between 2 and 4 inches, with up to 6 inches possible above 2,000 feet, according to the NWS in Burlington.
Hazardous conditions could impact the Friday evening commute as snow-covered and slippery roads develop.
Drivers are advised to slow down and check road conditions before traveling, especially in higherâelevation and rural areas.
Vermont
Large portions of Vermont, including Montpelier, Stowe, Newport, St. Johnsbury and surrounding mountain communities, are also under a winter weather advisory through late Friday evening.
The NWS expects 2 to 4 inches of snow across most areas, with totals increasing to 4 to 6 inches at higher elevations.
Periods of heavier
snowfall
could briefly reduce visibility and make untreated roads slick during the day and evening hours.
Officials are urging motorists to plan for slower travel, use caution, and monitor conditions as snow continues to fall throughout the day.
What People Should Do
The NWS is urging caution for anyone who plans to be on the roads during the storm,
warning
that conditions could change quickly.Â
"Slow down and use caution while traveling," forecasters advised. "Use caution while traveling, especially in open areas."
For those who must drive, officials recommend being prepared for emergencies.Â
"If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water with you in case of an emergency," the agency said, while also advising drivers to "plan extra time if traveling and prepare for rapidly changing conditions."
Residents are also encouraged to take steps at home before conditions worsen.Â
"People are urged to prepare their property before the onset of winter weather," the NWS said.
Officials recommend checking road conditions before heading out.Â
"For the latest road conditions, where available, call 511 or visit 511.alaska.gov," the agency said, while travelers in the Northeast were directed to visit https://newengland511.org and for New York, visit https://511ny.org. |

Alerts include winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories spanning large parts of [Alaska](https://www.newsweek.com/topic/alaska), northern [New York](https://www.newsweek.com/topic/new-york), and [Vermont](https://www.newsweek.com/topic/vermont), with [impacts ranging from heavy snowfall](https://www.newsweek.com/heavy-snow-warning-12-inches-to-hit-difficult-11701526) and blowing [snow](https://www.newsweek.com/topic/snow) to slippery roads [during peak travel hours.](https://www.newsweek.com/winter-weather-warning-5-states-11-inches-snow-forecast-hazardous-11616832)
## **Alaska**
Alaska is facing the most significant impacts, with [winter storm](https://www.newsweek.com/topic/winter-storm) warnings and advisories in effect across southeast Alaska, southcentral Alaska and parts of the western and northern coasts.
Turnagain Pass, Portage and Girdwood could see 6 to 12 inches of snow, with localized totals reaching up to 18 inches before advisories expire early Friday morning, according to the [NWS](https://www.newsweek.com/topic/national-weather-service) in Anchorage.

## **New York**
## **Vermont**
Large portions of Vermont, including Montpelier, Stowe, Newport, St. Johnsbury and surrounding mountain communities, are also under a winter weather advisory through late Friday evening.
The NWS expects 2 to 4 inches of snow across most areas, with totals increasing to 4 to 6 inches at higher elevations.
Periods of heavier [snowfall](https://www.newsweek.com/topic/snowfall) could briefly reduce visibility and make untreated roads slick during the day and evening hours.
Officials are urging motorists to plan for slower travel, use caution, and monitor conditions as snow continues to fall throughout the day.
## **What People Should Do**
The NWS is urging caution for anyone who plans to be on the roads during the storm, [warning](https://www.newsweek.com/topic/warning) that conditions could change quickly.
"Slow down and use caution while traveling," forecasters advised. "Use caution while traveling, especially in open areas."
For those who must drive, officials recommend being prepared for emergencies.
"If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water with you in case of an emergency," the agency said, while also advising drivers to "plan extra time if traveling and prepare for rapidly changing conditions."
Residents are also encouraged to take steps at home before conditions worsen.
"People are urged to prepare their property before the onset of winter weather," the NWS said.
Officials recommend checking road conditions before heading out.
"For the latest road conditions, where available, call 511 or visit 511.alaska.gov," the agency said, while travelers in the Northeast were directed to visit https://newengland511.org and for New York, visit https://511ny.org. |
