President Donald Trump 's approval rating stands at 49 percent, according to an average calculated by Newsweek, while his disapproval rating sits at 47 percent. While January polls showed that Trump was more popular than ever, his numbers have since begun to dip. Why It Matters Trump's approval rating is a key indicator of his political strength as he navigates his second term and prepares for future policy battles. A shift in his numbers could influence support from Republican lawmakers, affect his ability to push through his agenda, and shape the political landscape heading into the midterm election cycle. trump President Donald Trump waves before departing on Marine One from the South Lawn of the White House, Friday, March 7, 2025, in Washington. | Alex Brandon/AP/AP What To Know Newsweek 's average of the 10 most recent polls found that Trump had a 49 percent approval rating and a 47 percent disapproval rating. The figures reflect a decline in Trump's popularity since January. However, his approval rating has risen by one point since March 6 , when Newsweek 's average showed both his approval and disapproval ratings at 48 percent. The poll, conducted on March 5 among 800 registered voters, had a margin of error of 3.5 percentage points. In February, polling from the Trafalgar Group and InsiderAdvantage showed Trump's approval rating at 54 percent, while 45 percent of respondents disapproved and 1 percent were undecided. The poll, conducted between February 7 and 9 among 1,321 voters, had a margin of error of 3 percentage points. Trump's highest approval rating in recent days came from two polls: Rasmussen Reports and CBS News, with both showing 51 percent approval. In the Rasmussen poll, conducted between February 26 and March 4 among 1,500 likely voters, 47 percent disapproved. In the CBS News poll, conducted between February 26 and 28 among 2,311 adults, 49 percent disapproved. Meanwhile, a recent AtlasIntel poll conducted between February 24 and 27 among 2,849 adults showed a 50 percent approval rating, with an equal 50 percent disapproval. Rasmussen's most recent poll, conducted from March 3 to 5, also recorded a 50 percent approval rating, with 48 percent disapproving. Trump's lowest approval rating came from the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll—conducted from March 3 to 4 among 1,174 adults—in which 44 percent approved of his performance, while 51 percent disapproved. On January 21, the day after Trump's inauguration, Nate Silver 's polling tracker showed his approval rating at 52 percent, while 40 percent disapproved of his performance. Surveys have indicated that Trump's popularity could be owed to his immigration agenda. In the latest Quantus Insights poll, conducted between February 24 and 26 among 1,000 registered voters, 58 percent of respondents said they approved of Trump's immigration policies, while 40 percent said they disapproved. Still, this week, Trump's net approval rating turned negative for the first time since he returned to the White House. Surveys have suggested the dip could be due to pessimism about the state of the economy and disapproval of Trump's foreign policy stances. In the latest Economist /YouGov poll, the president's approval rating on the economy was down one point to 45 percent. According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted between February 12 and 18, 53 percent of respondents said they believed the economy was on the wrong track —up 10 points from the 43 percent who said the same in a January poll. According to a Labor Department report, January saw the largest consumer price increase in almost 18 months. Meanwhile, the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll showed that 37 percent of respondents approved of the way Trump was handling foreign policy, while 50 percent disapproved, giving the president a net approval rating of -13 points. That figure is down from January, when the pollsters found Trump had a net approval rating of 2 points on foreign policy. On February 28, the president had a heated confrontation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky , which resulted in Trump pausing military aid to Ukraine . What People Are Saying InsiderAdvantage pollster Matt Towery and Trafalgar Group pollster Robert Cahaly said in analysis of the recent results : "President Trump is maintaining his approval ratings and may be seeing them starting to strengthen even more. We believe that his ratings might have suffered a bit immediately following the Zelensky meeting, but recovered and started to accelerate following his address to a joint session of Congress . The survey had a slightly higher undecided percentage than we usually see. "Based on our experience many of these undecided voters likely fell into the 'disapprove' category immediately following the meeting with the Ukrainian leader but shifted to undecided after they had the weekend to learn more about the meeting and then were exposed to Trump's speech. The speech received strong approval ratings in several other national surveys. It appears that President Trump's numbers suffered no damage over the Ukraine meeting and his approval numbers are perhaps poised to rise more in the coming days as undecideds in the poll settle out." What Happens Next Trump's approval rating could fluctuate in the coming weeks depending on key political events, policy decisions and ongoing legal battles. Newsweek will update Trump's average approval rating every week.

While January polls showed that Trump was more popular than ever, his numbers have since begun to dip. ## Why It Matters Trump's approval rating is a key indicator of his political strength as he navigates his second term and prepares for future policy battles. A shift in his numbers could influence support from [Republican](https://www.newsweek.com/topic/republican) lawmakers, affect his ability to push through his agenda, and shape the political landscape heading into the midterm election cycle. Trump's highest approval rating in recent days came from two polls: Rasmussen Reports and [CBS](https://www.newsweek.com/topic/cbs) News, with both showing 51 percent approval. On January 21, the day after Trump's inauguration, [Nate Silver](https://www.newsweek.com/topic/nate-silver)'s polling tracker showed his approval rating at 52 percent, while 40 percent disapproved of his performance. Still, this week, Trump's [net approval rating turned negative](https://www.newsweek.com/donald-trump-approval-rating-negative-first-time-presidency-2039743) for the first time since he returned to the White House. Surveys have suggested the dip could be due to [pessimism about the state of the economy](https://www.newsweek.com/donald-trump-economy-polling-2034382) and disapproval of Trump's foreign policy stances. In the latest *Economist*/YouGov poll, the president's approval rating on the economy was down one point to 45 percent. According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted between February 12 and 18, 53 percent of respondents said they believed the economy [was on the wrong track](https://www.newsweek.com/donald-trump-poll-economy-inflation-2033668)—up 10 points from the 43 percent who said the same in a January poll. On February 28, the president had a heated confrontation with Ukrainian President [Volodymyr Zelensky](https://www.newsweek.com/topic/volodymyr-zelensky), which resulted in Trump [pausing military aid to Ukraine](https://www.newsweek.com/trump-keeps-ukraine-aid-ban-despite-zelensky-backing-down-reports-2039801). ## What People Are Saying ****InsiderAdvantage pollster** Matt Towery and **Trafalgar Group pollster** Robert **Cahaly** said in analysis of the recent results**: "President Trump is maintaining his approval ratings and may be seeing them starting to strengthen even more. We believe that his ratings might have suffered a bit immediately following the Zelensky meeting, but recovered and started to accelerate following his address to a joint session of [Congress](https://www.newsweek.com/topic/congress). The speech [received strong approval ratings](https://www.newsweek.com/donald-trump-congress-speech-poll-approve-2039740) in several other national surveys. It appears that President Trump's numbers suffered no damage over the Ukraine meeting and his approval numbers are perhaps poised to rise more in the coming days as undecideds in the poll settle out." ## What Happens Next Trump's approval rating could fluctuate in the coming weeks depending on key political events, policy decisions and ongoing legal battles. *Newsweek* will update Trump's average approval rating every week.
