President Donald Trump 's approval rating has equaled the record set during his first term, according to a Fox News poll. Forty-nine percent said they approved of the job Trump is doing as president in the latest Fox News survey, conducted between March 14 and 17 among 994 registered voters. It matched the highest approval rating Trump scored in a Fox News survey during his first term—in April 2020. But the survey still shows that a small majority of voters disapprove of the job he's doing, particularly on the economy, and it came after a separate Reuters/Ipsos survey found his disapproval rating even higher. President Donald Trump waves to the crowd President Donald Trump waves to the crowd upon entering the arena during the 2025 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at the Wells Fargo Center on... | Hunter Martin/Getty Images/Getty Images Why It Matters Presidential approval ratings provide insights into how the public believes the president is handling important issues. A shift in numbers could affect Trump's ability to push through his agenda, impact the support he has from lawmakers, and influence the political landscape as the 2026 midterm elections approach. What to Know The Fox News poll found 49 percent of registered voters approve of the job Trump is doing, with 30 percent of them strongly approving. But it found 51 percent disapprove of the job he's doing, with 45 percent strongly disapproving. The poll also found that 56 percent of voters approve of the way Trump is handling border security, while just 43 percent and 40 percent approve of the way he is managing the economy and inflation, respectively. The Reuters/Ipsos survey, which was conducted between March 11 and 12, found 52 percent disapproved of his performance, while 44 percent approved. CNN's Chief Data Analyst Harry Enten on Thursday noted that every other modern president besides Trump had maintained net positive approval ratings at this point in their presidency. What People Are Saying Costas Panagopoulos, a professor of political science at Northeastern University, told Newsweek : "While it appears Trump's net approval rating remains negative at this point in his second term, it is also true that it may not be as deeply underwater as it has been in the past. Overall approval also seems to be higher compared to previous ratings for Trump. The most one can conclude from these estimates is that the country remains closely divided over Trump's performance, which is perhaps not very different or surprising to many." Pollster Nate Silver wrote in a Substack post on Saturday: "From the first full day of his presidency, Jan. 21, through yesterday — March 21: conveniently exactly two months later — Trump's net approval rating has declined by 13.8 points, so around 7 points per month. A president can't afford that rate of decline for long." CNN's Chief Data Analyst Harry Enten wrote on X on Thursday: "Trump becomes only the 2nd president (tying himself) to have net negative approval two months into a term. He is underwater on all major issues (economy, foreign policy, etc.), except immigration." Representative Mike Simpson, a Republican, wrote on X on Thursday: "The media has worked tirelessly to paint [POTUS] and his policies in a negative light. Don't be fooled. Approval ratings for Pres. Trump and Republicans are at record highs. America is once again leading with strength." What's Next Trump's approval rating is likely to continue fluctuating in the coming weeks amid growing concerns about government layoffs, tariffs and a recession.

A shift in numbers could affect Trump's ability to push through his agenda, impact the support he has from lawmakers, and influence the political landscape as the 2026 midterm elections approach. ## **What to Know** The Fox News poll found 49 percent of registered voters approve of the job Trump is doing, with 30 percent of them strongly approving. ## **What People Are Saying** ****Costas Panagopoulos, a professor of political science at Northeastern University, told *Newsweek*:**** "While it appears Trump's net approval rating remains negative at this point in his second term, it is also true that it may not be as deeply underwater as it has been in the past. Overall approval also seems to be higher compared to previous ratings for Trump. The most one can conclude from these estimates is that the country remains closely divided over Trump's performance, which is perhaps not very different or surprising to many." **Pollster Nate Silver** **wrote** **in a Substack post on Saturday:** "From the first full day of his presidency, Jan. 21, through yesterday — March 21: conveniently exactly two months later — Trump's net approval rating has declined by 13.8 points, so around 7 points per month. A president can't afford that rate of decline for long." **CNN's Chief Data Analyst Harry Enten** **wrote on X** **on Thursday:** "Trump becomes only the 2nd president (tying himself) to have net negative approval two months into a term. He is underwater on all major issues (economy, foreign policy, etc.), except immigration." **Representative Mike Simpson, a Republican,** **wrote on X** **on Thursday:** "The media has worked tirelessly to paint \[POTUS\] and his policies in a negative light. Don't be fooled. Approval ratings for Pres. Trump and [Republicans](https://www.newsweek.com/topic/republicans) are at record highs. America is once again leading with strength." ## **What's Next** Trump's approval rating is likely to continue fluctuating in the coming weeks amid growing concerns about government layoffs, tariffs and a recession.
