In July, Lewisville Firefighters responded to a f ire that appeared to have started when a homeowner tried to charge their Tesla . Investigators said the cause of the fire is listed as undetermined and the investigation is now closed with no new information. The incident shed light about electric vehicles as a whole and how firefighters respond to battery fires.  "When we show up put water on that fire to put it out and that's not the case with electric vehicles," said Battalion Chief Brandon Clark with the Lewisville Fire Department. Dealing with car fires is nothing new for firefighters, but electric vehicles can pose a whole new challenge. “When one does catch on fire, it's going to burn hotter, it's going to burn longer," explained Clark. He said once flames reach the lithium-ion batteries, the chemical reaction makes it harder for them to fight the fire. Local The latest news from around North Texas. A fire truck can usually hold about 750 gallons of water, Clark said that is usually enough for an engine-powered car fire, but with an electric vehicle, it can take upwards of 10,000 gallons of water. Depending on the location, like if it's in the middle of the street, they'll let the car burn itself out. "A lot of times, letting them burn is the best case scenario instead of trying to put the fire out," explained Clark. That is why in July, they were concerned when called out to a housefire that was reported as an electric vehicle on fire at a home inside the garage. Initially, they didn't know the situation, but learned the homeowner was able to move the electric vehicle, a Tesla, before the fire spread. Flames damaged the garage, another car and part of the second floor. Investigators believed possibly a car charger in the garage caused the fire, but in August said the cause was undetermined.  "We were able to put the fire out a lot quicker than what we had anticipated," explained Clark. According to the Fire Safety Research Institute , there are current experiments underway to find ways to tackle electric vehicle fires, like the use of a fire blanket or foam. Until something is concrete, for now, there are not many options for firefighters. “I would venture to say that most of the time they're safe cars to drive. But again, the biggest part of them is sometimes you don't know when something's going to go wrong. And when it does, it can be catastrophic," said Clark, who happens to be an owner of an electric car.
