Read on to find out when the first Winter Olympics took place and how it came to be. ## When were the first Winter Olympics? Photo: Getty Images ## Winter sports were slowly introduced as Olympic events Before the Games were split into two seasonal cycles, ice events were slowly introduced into the regular program, beginning in 1908, when a [figure skating competition was held in October](https://www.olympics.com/en/olympic-games/london-1908/results/figure-skating), long after the summertime events had concluded. In 1920, [the Antwerp Games](https://www.olympics.com/en/olympic-games/antwerp-1920) held a figure skating competition and an ice hockey competition in April, before the summer events. Then in 1924, the IOC sanctioned the first International Winter Sports Week, held in January of that year in the French Alps, which was later renamed as the "1st Olympic Winter Games." Four years later, in 1928, the [II Olympic Winter Games](https://www.olympics.com/en/olympic-games/st-moritz-1948) were held in St. Moritz, Switzerland, featuring events in figure skating, slalom, and more. But due to the increasingly difficult logistics of the always-expanding Games, in 1986, the IOC altered the schedule so that on even-numbered years, the Games alternated between events, which still took place on a four-year cycle (except for the 1992 Winter Games in Albertville, France, followed by the 1994 Winter Games in Lillehammer, Norway), per [Brittanica](https://www.britannica.com/sports/Origins-of-the-Olympic-Winter-Games). Ice hockey and figure skating continue to be two of the most popular winter events, but [more sports](https://www.olympics.com/en/sports/winter-olympics) have been added over the years, with some of the newest [including snowboarding](https://www.nbc.com/nbc-insider/snowboarder-chloe-kim-trying-to-stay-positive-after-dislocated-shoulder), skeleton (the first mixed-gender event will be held this year), and [ski mountaineering](https://www.nbc.com/nbc-insider/2026-winter-olympics-new-sports-ski-mountaineering), which makes its debut in February 2026 at the XXV Winter Games at the Milan Cortina Olympics.
