Mexican budget airline Interjet has been flying for 12 years and in the US for seven years but remains unknown to most Americans. The carrier became a little better known in February when it added San Francisco International Airport to its schedule, making a total of US 10 cities served by the family-owned airline.
For now,
Interjet
flies Airbus A320 nonstops three days a week from SFO to Mexico's second-largest city, Guadalajara, as well as three times a week to Cancun, the country's most popular vacation destination.

How cheap are the fares? The airline is offering promotional discounts at least through November but they are selling out fast. When searching in in mid-June, I found a fare for as little as $218 round trip from SFO to Guadalajara for travel in mid-August. The promotional fares for travel before then had already sold out. I also found a $300 roundtrip flight between SFO and Cancun for travel in August.

If your dates are flexible, click on the airline's calendar option to select the cheapest dates. But that calendar option is only visible after you have already selected travel dates. So to find the cheapest fare, select any random travel dates then click on "calendar" to select other dates with a cheaper fare. Here's a

that explains how to do this.

Beyond low fares, Interjet offers more economy class legroom than its legacy competitors. It has a 34 inch seat pitch, compared to 31-32 inches for United or American. Interjet also serves free drinks , including alcohol and small snacks. On the minus column, only a few of the carrier's 83-aircraft fleet has WiFi or entertainment and none have electrical outlets. Free meals or the option to buy meals are not on the menu either. Interjet plans to eventually phase in WiFi for a charge yet to be determined. Interjet does not offer offer first or premium economy seats.

Interjet offers three types of fares,
Light, Optima and Priority
. Every fare is allowed two pieces of carry on luggage which together cannot weigh more than 22 pounds. The Optima fare includes one piece of checked luggage. You can check two pieces of baggage for free with Priority. A "Light" fare charges between $25-$36 per piece of checked luggage. Optima and Priority allow you to select your own seat and Priority will allow you to select the first two rows or exit row seats for even more room.

Tourist-dependent businesses in Guadalajara hope that Interjet's flights will bolster tourism to that city that gets overshadowed by Mexico City or the country's many beach destinations. I lived in Guadalajara for two months in 2011 and have been back to visit many times since. The overwhelming majority of tourists I met there were not Americans or Canadians but were from other parts of Mexico. In my time living in the tourist-popular downtown or El Centro, I very seldom heard anything other than Spanish spoken on the streets. A large American expat community lives about an hour outside Guadalajara in the upscale town of Ajijic which is on Mexico's largest lake, Chapala. The Chapala region as well as the picturesque town of Tequila, a little more than an hour outside Guadalajara, are side-trips that visitors to Guadalajara often make.
Perhaps as in indicator of the airline's much lower profile in the US than in Mexico, everyone I heard talking on a recent flight to Guadalajara was speaking Spanish. I was seated in a middle seat in one of the two exit rows and the fight attendant advised all the passengers seated there of the emergency duties in Spanish. Observing that I was the only one of the 12 in the exit rows who didn't look Latino, she smiled and bent down to give me the instructions in English. The airline's flight magazine is only in Spanish and although most of the flight instructions were given in Spanish and English, some were only in Spanish.
Unlike US carriers, Interjet offers complimentary snacks and drinks, including alcohol, to all passengers. But unlike most airlines that serve drinks shortly after take off, the flight attendants waited until more than halfway into both of my flights to serve drinks. But they started the service from the back and front of the plane so once the service started, it went quickly. So if you are thirsty, don't panic, the drinks will come. The flight time between Guadalajara and San Francisco is about four hours. (To Cancun, it's 5-6 hours)

Although
Interjet
promotes that it serves free snacks, that is a bit of a stretch. You are given a choice of three small bags of crunchy snacks, similar to JetBlue but JetBlue has a wider selection and leaves extras in the galley for anyone to help themselves during the flight. Breakfast bars are served during early morning flights. My friend and I asked if we could have both breakfast bars that were offered and the flight attendant gladly gave us both.

Drinks include a good selection of soft drinks and coffee. The alcoholic offerings include beer, tequila, whisky, vodka and rum, but no wine. Don't turn down a cup of ice that is offered with the drinks. I ordered a soft drink but it was warm and another friend with whom I was traveling asked for beer and was given a can that was also warm She was offered a glass of ice to go with the beer but wound up ordering a soft drink instead. Coffee is served in extra small cups. If you want cream with your coffee, it will be powdered, not real cream or half and half.
I found that the extra legroom made a big difference. I was able to work on a full size laptop easily without feeling cramped The leather seats were comfortable. Priority service allows you to go in an exclusive, shorter line at check in. That's in addition to being able to select your own seats including the coveted first two Priority rows, which have even more legroom than the seats on rest of the plane.
Interjet boasts that it is the only Mexican airline that has a restroom designated for women only. Undoubtedly that feature will impress many woman who are fed up with men missing the mark.
Interjet offers
a frequent flier program
which uniquely requires a $25 annual fee. For that you get a 15% credit each time you buy a ticket, which is put in your electronic wallet to use for the next flight. Wallet funds expire after one year, so the program is only worthwhile if you buy at least one more ticket within a year of your last flight. Interjet has a codeshare agreement with American Airlines but you can only accrue AAdvantage miles with Interjet if you fly from Mexico City to a dozen other cities in Mexico.

Interjet operates out of the International Terminal at SFO. The check in process is easy but the airline does not participate in the TSA Precheck program. Fortunately the terminal at SFO is usually well-staffed, so you probably won't have to wait long in the regular line. The check in process was easy in Guadalajara as well. But there was no jet bridge between the plane and gate in Guadalajara. We had to walk on to the tarmac and load on a bus to the gate. The buses were packed in like sardines and one of the buses I took was inexplicably infested with small flying flea-like bugs. But fortunately the unidentified flying bugs didn't bite and the process went quickly.
Bottom line: I would highly recommend
Interjet
but just be sure to pack a lunch for long flights and with no onboard entertainment, bring a book or download a video to watch on the plane. One of Interjet's competitors, Aeromexico, still serves free hot meals on its flights, but with lower fares and ample legroom, Interjet makes up for that deficit.
Be sure to flip through the slideshow at the top of this post for a look at the jet and Guadalajara!

*The line to board an Interjet A320 at the Guadalajara airport*
Ed Walsh
Mexican budget airline Interjet has been flying for 12 years and in the US for seven years but remains unknown to most Americans. The carrier became a little better known in February when it added San Francisco International Airport to its schedule, making a total of US 10 cities served by the family-owned airline.
For now, [Interjet](https://www.interjet.com/en-us) flies Airbus A320 nonstops three days a week from SFO to Mexico's second-largest city, Guadalajara, as well as three times a week to Cancun, the country's most popular vacation destination.

*(This review was written by San Francisco-based writer Ed Walsh who participated in a media familiarization trip provided by the airline and the local tourism board.)*
How cheap are the fares? The airline is offering promotional discounts at least through November but they are selling out fast. When searching in in mid-June, I found a fare for as little as \$218 round trip from SFO to Guadalajara for travel in mid-August. The promotional fares for travel before then had already sold out. I also found a \$300 roundtrip flight between SFO and Cancun for travel in August.
More For You
If your dates are flexible, click on the airline's calendar option to select the cheapest dates. But that calendar option is only visible after you have already selected travel dates. So to find the cheapest fare, select any random travel dates then click on "calendar" to select other dates with a cheaper fare. Here's a [video tutorial](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbXhen9EZu0) that explains how to do this.

Interjet offers three types of fares, [Light, Optima and Priority](https://www.interjet.com/en-us/flying-with-us/fares). Every fare is allowed two pieces of carry on luggage which together cannot weigh more than 22 pounds. The Optima fare includes one piece of checked luggage. You can check two pieces of baggage for free with Priority. A "Light" fare charges between \$25-\$36 per piece of checked luggage.

Although [Interjet](https://www.interjet.com/en-us) promotes that it serves free snacks, that is a bit of a stretch.

Interjet offers [a frequent flier program](https://www.interjet.com/about-club-interjet.aspx?culture=en-us) which uniquely requires a \$25 annual fee.

Bottom line: I would highly recommend [Interjet](https://www.interjet.com/en-us) but just be sure to pack a lunch for long flights and with no onboard entertainment, bring a book or download a video to watch on the plane. One of Interjet's competitors, Aeromexico, still serves free hot meals on its flights, but with lower fares and ample legroom, Interjet makes up for that deficit.
*Be sure to flip through the slideshow at the top of this post for a look at the jet and Guadalajara\!*
