All vehicles and trailers used on Michigan’s roadways must be registered and display a valid license plate with a current registration tab. Your vehicle registration will show your license plate number and vehicle information number (VIN).
Pick from several plate options depending on your eligibility:
Vehicle registration (Choose tab)
Registration fees
Electric vehicles
Michigan No-Fault Insurance
Recreation passport
At the time of purchasing a license plate for your vehicle, you will also be charged for the registration fees for the vehicle.
Vehicle registration fees are set by state law and calculated using a formula based on:
Vehicle base price (MSRP) from the year it was manufactured
License plate fees
Processing fees
Addition of a Recreation Passport or personalized license plate (both are optional)
The fee is then reduced by a percentage of that original registration fee for the following three years. Under the present law, no further reduction is provided. If the vehicle is older than 1984, the fee is based on the weight of the vehicle.
If you’re transferring a vehicle title into your name, 6% sales tax is also collected when you complete the transfer and register your vehicle.
Use the Registration Fee Calculator under Online Services to calculate registration fees for your vehicle.

Electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles
An electric vehicle (EV) is propelled only by electrical energy and doesn’t require gasoline, diesel, or other fuels.
Examples of EVs are the Chevrolet Bolt, Nissan Leaf, and Tesla models.
Plug-in passenger hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) are like EVs because they both use electrical power to propel the vehicle. However, unlike EVs, PHEVs also use a gasoline or diesel internal combustion engine in combination with the electric motor.
Examples of PHEVs are the Chevrolet Volt, Ford Escape Plug-in, and Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid.
Fees for renewing the vehicle registration for an EV and a PHEV
EV and PHEV fees are charged when renewing an EV or PHEV registration.
The fee will also be charged when a plate is transferred from a non-electric or non-hybrid vehicle to an electric or hybrid vehicle.
The EV fee is $267 and is charged in addition to any regular registration fees. The EV fee for trucks and buses is $367.
The PHEV fee is $113 and is charged in addition to the regular registration fees. The PHEV fee for trucks and buses is $183.
State requirements for Michigan No-Fault insurance
Per state law, you must provide proof of a valid Michigan No-Fault automobile insurance policy to register or renew your vehicle in Michigan.
An out-of-state vehicle insurance policy can’t be used to register a vehicle in Michigan.
More information on insurance policies is available through the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS).
Go to Michigan.gov/AutoInsurance
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Recreation Passport gets you into all state parks, recreation areas, and boat launches.
A Recreation Passport can be added to your vehicle registration at any time. The cost is:
Vehicles - $15 for a one-year vehicle registration; $29 for a two-year vehicle registration when renewing. Outside of your renewal period, you will pay the Recreation Passport fee plus a $5 tab replacement fee.
Motorcycles - $7
More information on Recreation Passports is available through the DNR.

Renewing a vehicle plate and tab
When renewing your vehicle registration, remember that:
Vehicle registration tabs and plates expire on the vehicle owner’s birthday.
One- and two-year vehicle registrations are available. The two-year option is only available for renewing passenger vehicles, motorcycles, pickups, and vans that are owned or leased by an individual.
There are four ways to renew: Using your
online Secretary of State account
,
by mail
, at a
self-service station
or at a
Secretary of State office
.
Proof of valid Michigan No-Fault insurance is required when renewing your vehicle.
Some insurance companies verify their customers’ proof of insurance using the Electronic Insurance Verification (EIV) system. This automatically updates Secretary of State records and removes the need for the customer to provide proof of insurance when renewing. Check your renewal notice to see if proof of insurance is required.
If your insurance company doesn’t use EIV, you must renew by mail or at a Secretary of State office. Provide a copy of your valid, Michigan No-Fault insurance certificate.
To calculate your renewal fee, check your renewal mailer or use the renewal
fee calculator under “Payment and “Fees” in Online Services
.
If you are ordering a disability plate or a military/veteran plate for the first time, you must renew by mail or at a Secretary of State office.
Visit our Tab and plate renewal web page for more information.

### Industry and commercial plates
Farm, gross vehicle weight (GVW), log, fleet, and other commercial vehicle license plates can be applied for and, in some cases, are required to be renewed at a Secretary of State office.
The Department has two types of commercial plates:
Regular commercial plates for:
- A vehicle used to transport persons for hire like a taxi, bus, or limousine.
- Company-owned pickups and vans weighing up to 8,000 pounds empty not towing a trailer.
- A vehicle weighing up to 8,000 pounds empty used commercially to transport goods, wares, or merchandise like a stake truck, tank, dump, utility truck, including passenger vehicles used commercially.
- Ambulances and hearses.
Elected Gross Vehicle Weight GVW plates:
- All trucks weighing over 8,000 pounds empty used commercially
- All semi tractors used commercially
- Trucks weighing 8,000 pounds or less empty towing a trailer or towing any other vehicle for commercial purposes.
- [GVW plate fee](https://www.michigan.gov/sos/vehicle/ownership/vehicle-base-prices) is based on the truck's maximum elected gross vehicle weight. Elected gross vehicle weight is the empty weight of the vehicle or combination of vehicles, fully equipped for service, plus the weight of the maximum load that the owner has elected to carry.

Visual representation of a digital Michigan license plate
### Digital license plates
The Michigan Department of State does not sell, administer, or profit from digital license plates. They are legal in Michigan but only sold by private companies and auto dealers. Digital plates serve as representations of the standard metal license plates that vehicle owners must register and renew with the Secretary of State.
*Please note: Michigan is discontinuing its current digital plate option. As of August 9, 2026, owners of existing digital plates will need to replace them with standard metal license plates.*
## Vehicle registration (Choose tab)
- Registration fees
- Electric vehicles
- Michigan No-Fault Insurance
- Recreation passport
At the time of purchasing a license plate for your vehicle, you will also be charged for the registration fees for the vehicle.
Vehicle registration fees are set by state law and calculated using a formula based on:
- Vehicle base price (MSRP) from the year it was manufactured
- License plate fees
- Processing fees
- Addition of a Recreation Passport or personalized license plate (both are optional)

### Electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles
- An electric vehicle (EV) is propelled only by electrical energy and doesn’t require gasoline, diesel, or other fuels.
- Examples of EVs are the Chevrolet Bolt, Nissan Leaf, and Tesla models.
- Plug-in passenger hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) are like EVs because they both use electrical power to propel the vehicle. However, unlike EVs, PHEVs also use a gasoline or diesel internal combustion engine in combination with the electric motor.
- Examples of PHEVs are the Chevrolet Volt, Ford Escape Plug-in, and Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid.
### Fees for renewing the vehicle registration for an EV and a PHEV
- EV and PHEV fees are charged when renewing an EV or PHEV registration.
- The fee will also be charged when a plate is transferred from a non-electric or non-hybrid vehicle to an electric or hybrid vehicle.
- The EV fee is \$267 and is charged in addition to any regular registration fees. The EV fee for trucks and buses is \$367.
- The PHEV fee is \$113 and is charged in addition to the regular registration fees. The PHEV fee for trucks and buses is \$183.
### State requirements for Michigan No-Fault insurance
- Per state law, you must provide proof of a valid Michigan No-Fault automobile insurance policy to register or renew your vehicle in Michigan.
- An out-of-state vehicle insurance policy can’t be used to register a vehicle in Michigan.
- More information on insurance policies is available through the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS).
[Go to Michigan.gov/AutoInsurance](https://www.michigan.gov/AutoInsurance "Opens in new tab")
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Recreation Passport gets you into all state parks, recreation areas, and boat launches.
A Recreation Passport can be added to your vehicle registration at any time. The cost is:
- Vehicles - \$15 for a one-year vehicle registration; \$29 for a two-year vehicle registration when renewing. Outside of your renewal period, you will pay the Recreation Passport fee plus a \$5 tab replacement fee.
- Motorcycles - \$7
More information on Recreation Passports is available through the DNR.

## **Renewing a vehicle plate and tab**
**When renewing your vehicle registration, remember that:**
- Vehicle registration tabs and plates expire on the vehicle owner’s birthday.
- One- and two-year vehicle registrations are available. The two-year option is only available for renewing passenger vehicles, motorcycles, pickups, and vans that are owned or leased by an individual.
- There are four ways to renew: Using your [online Secretary of State account](https://milogin.michigan.gov/eai/login/authenticate), [by mail](https://www.michigan.gov/sos/all-services/tab-and-plate-renewal), at a [self-service station](https://www.miselfservicestation.com/) or at a [Secretary of State office](https://dsvsesvc.sos.state.mi.us/TAP/?Link=APPOINTMENT).
- Proof of valid Michigan No-Fault insurance is required when renewing your vehicle.
- Some insurance companies verify their customers’ proof of insurance using the Electronic Insurance Verification (EIV) system. This automatically updates Secretary of State records and removes the need for the customer to provide proof of insurance when renewing. Check your renewal notice to see if proof of insurance is required.
- If your insurance company doesn’t use EIV, you must renew by mail or at a Secretary of State office. Provide a copy of your valid, Michigan No-Fault insurance certificate.
- To calculate your renewal fee, check your renewal mailer or use the renewal [fee calculator under “Payment and “Fees” in Online Services](https://dsvsesvc.sos.state.mi.us/TAP/_/).
- If you are ordering a disability plate or a military/veteran plate for the first time, you must renew by mail or at a Secretary of State office.

Motorists are allowed to put plates that are not used for registration (such as novelty, decorative, or collector plates) on the front of the vehicle. However, any plate that was once registered to a vehicle, even if expired and no longer in use, should not be displayed on the vehicle.

| Readable Markdown | ## Requirements and options
All vehicles and trailers used on Michigan’s roadways must be registered and display a valid license plate with a current registration tab. Your vehicle registration will show your license plate number and vehicle information number (VIN).
Pick from several plate options depending on your eligibility:
Vehicle registration (Choose tab)
- Registration fees
- Electric vehicles
- Michigan No-Fault Insurance
- Recreation passport
At the time of purchasing a license plate for your vehicle, you will also be charged for the registration fees for the vehicle.
Vehicle registration fees are set by state law and calculated using a formula based on:
- Vehicle base price (MSRP) from the year it was manufactured
- License plate fees
- Processing fees
- Addition of a Recreation Passport or personalized license plate (both are optional)

- Visit our Tab and plate renewal web page for more information.
