[License and ID information](\"License and ID information\")\n\n## Licenses and IDs at a glance\n- **Expiration date:** Your driver’s license or ID expires on your birthday every four years.\n- **Renewals:** Renew on time to avoid late fees. Licenses and IDs may be renewed online, by mail, or at a self-service station.\n- **Office visits:** Most residents only need to visit a Secretary of State office every 12 years to renew their license or ID in person, take a new photo, and complete a vision exam (drivers only).\n- **Redesigned card**: Michigan's new driver's licenses and IDs with higher security features are now in circulation. Residents will receive the new license or ID design if applying for their first card or when renewing\/replacing their current card. The $7 late fee is waived in the following circumstances: The license expires on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday; the expiration date is extended to include the next day that isn't a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday. [MCL 8.6] The license is renewed after the customer was issued a 180-day extension permit. The late fee is waived if the extension isn't expired. The applicant previously attempted to renew their driver's license, but the transaction couldn't be completed due to a system failure, delayed SAVE response, power outage, etc. The individual is coming off a medical suspension or revocation. The individual is in the military. They are protected under the federal Servicemembers Civil Relief Act of 2003. If the military member's driver's license is expired over four years, the license can be renewed up to 30 days after the person's first leave of absence (this doesn't mean their first leave to Michigan, but any leave of absence). The license can also be renewed up to 30 days from the person's discharge from service. Proof of military enrollment or discharge papers aren't required. The \$7 late fee is waived in the following circumstances: - The license expires on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday; the expiration date is extended to include the next day that isn't a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday. \[MCL 8.6\] - The license is renewed after the customer was issued a 180-day extension permit. The late fee is waived if the extension isn't expired. - The applicant previously attempted to renew their driver's license, but the transaction couldn't be completed due to a system failure, delayed SAVE response, power outage, etc. - The individual is coming off a medical suspension or revocation. - The individual is in the military. They are protected under the federal Servicemembers Civil Relief Act of 2003. If the military member's driver's license is expired over four years, the license can be renewed up to 30 days after the person's first leave of absence (this doesn't mean their first leave to Michigan, but any leave of absence). The license can also be renewed up to 30 days from the person's discharge from service. Proof of military enrollment or discharge papers aren't required. While most transactions can be completed online, by mail, and at self-service stations, some still must be completed in person at a Secretary of State office, including: - Applying for a first-time standard or enhanced driver’s license or ID - Converting a license or ID to a REAL ID-compliant credential - Correcting a name, gender designation, commercial endorsement or designation, or other information - Some title transactions - Registering a vehicle for the first time - Every 12 years to renew credential, take a new photo, and complete a vision test (drivers only) - To renew your license or ID in person ahead of your 21st birthday (any time up to six months ahead of your 21st birthday). - Can I drive if my driver's license expires on a weekend or holiday? The expiration date of your driver's license is extended to include the next business day if your driver's license expires on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday. - Why can't I have both a state identification card and a driver's license? According to section 28.291(4) of the State Personal Identification Card Act, the Secretary of State shall not issue an official state identification card to a person who holds an operator's or chauffeur's license, unless the license has been suspended, revoked or restricted. - Where can I obtain an International Driving Permit? The International Driving Permit is a translation of the driver's license. This permit/translation is carried in addition to the driver's license issued by the driver's home country. [How to apply for a no-fee ID](https://www.michigan.gov/sos/all-services/id-with-no-fee) - ### Standard driver's license costs - First-time: \$25 - Renewals: \$18 - Replace/correct: \$9 - Late fee: \$7 ### Enhanced driver's license costs - First-time: \$45 - Renewals: \$38 - Replace/correct: \$24 - Late fees: \$7 ### Late fees A \$7 late fee is charged if a customer renews a standard operator, an-enhanced operator, or an enhanced chauffeur license after the expiration date (late fees are not charged for standard chauffeur license renewals). The \$7 late fee is waived in the following circumstances: - The license expires on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday; the expiration date is extended to include the next day that isn't a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday. \[MCL 8.6\] - The license is renewed after the customer was issued a 180-day extension permit. The late fee is waived if the extension isn't expired. - The applicant previously attempted to renew their driver's license, but the transaction couldn't be completed due to a system failure, delayed SAVE response, power outage, etc. - The individual is coming off a medical suspension or revocation. - The individual is in the military. They are protected under the federal Servicemembers Civil Relief Act of 2003. If the military member's driver's license is expired over four years, the license can be renewed up to 30 days after the person's first leave of absence (this doesn't mean their first leave to Michigan, but any leave of absence). The license can also be renewed up to 30 days from the person's discharge from service. Proof of military enrollment or discharge papers aren't required. Those who are at least 18 years old and have a valid, unexpired Michigan driver’s license can apply for the Double R endorsement at a Secretary of State office. Drivers must complete and pass the Recreational Doubles written test and pay a \$10 fee to add the endorsement to their license. Your Michigan voter registration will automatically update at the same time. A corrected address sticker will be mailed to you to place on the back of your license or ID.
