In a two-line tweet, Oakland A’s pitcher Sean Doolittle made clear how he feels about Donald Trump’s attempt to dismiss his talk of groping women as “locker room talk.”
“As an athlete, I’ve been in locker rooms my entire adult life and uh, that’s not locker room talk,” he wrote.
Doolittle wasn’t the only sports star — or American man for that matter — who took issue with the GOP candidate’s boys-will-be-boys characterization of his lewd, videotaped chatter about female acquaintances that has rocked the presidential race. Yes, they conceded, men do talk differently and sometimes crudely when women aren’t around — but they don’t talk as crudely as Trump.
“I can’t speak to what it was like here in the ‘50s or ‘60s,” said Craig Moody, a member of the San Francisco’s famously exclusive and formerly all-male Olympic Club. “Maybe it was different in the ‘Mad Men’ era. But people don’t talk like that since I’ve been here.”

In the Trump tape — recorded on a bus rather than in an actual locker room — the businessman was heard in 2005 boasting about trying to have sex with a married woman and telling Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush that he’s entitled to grab any woman by the genitals because he’s “a star.”
The comments set off a firestorm when they leaked Friday, with Republicans by the dozens abandoning their support of his candidacy. And when Trump defended those comments as “locker room talk” on Friday and then again at Sunday night’s presidential debate, the heat only intensified.
Trump surrogate Rudolph Giuliani, the former New York City Mayor, endorsed Trump’s explanation even as he condemned his language. “Men say stupid things in locker rooms,” he told MSNBC political commentator Chris Matthews.
But feminists and pundits condemned Trump’s blithe chatter about sexual assault, and many men, too, stepped up in defense of their gender.
“I’ve been around “locker room banter, I’m sure more than Trump, and those are a few of the most disgusting things I’ve heard a man say,” tweeted Brandon Morrow, a San Diego Padres pitcher and UC Berkeley graduate.
In interviews Monday with men representing a variety of socio-economic groups on Monday, a more nuanced view of these male conversations emerged: men might swap X-rated jokes, reference parts of women’s anatomy, or even talk about sexual conquests. But some things are off limits, at least to most men, they say.
They’d never talk cruelly about a woman, especially someone they are intimately involved with. Nor would they inappropriately praise a daughter’s physical allure, as Trump has been heard doing on the Howard Stern radio show. And perhaps most important: They never brag about forcing themselves on anyone.
“No one talks like that and when I heard about (Trump’s taped comments) I felt terrible,” said Mike, 54, in the locker room at the 24 Hour Fitness Club in Walnut Creek as he suited up in his street clothes after a workout. “I’ve been coming here for 10 years and sometimes we’ll talk about gas prices or the economy and stuff, but nothing nasty,” said the Martinez resident, who declined to give his last name.
Several men suggested that Trump’s self-described “braggadocio” stems less from any innately male behavior but from a rich and powerful man’s sense of entitlement and outdated view of gender relations.
“There’s a huge difference between country club talk and what you’ll hear at a regular fitness club,” said Pat Lash, 48, of Walnut Creek, another 24-Hour Fitness client. He said he had been privy, however, to conversations at more upscale clubs in the East Bay or in San Francisco.
“You get in a country club with rich people talking — they think they can do anything and you will hear crazy stories,” he said. “They’re used to getting their way, and doing whatever they want to do.”
However, Moody, disputed the idea that the Olympic Club hosts gatherings of powerful men who boast about their exploits with women.
Anyone talking about women in such a manner would be “ostracized, chastised and beaten down,” he said.
Bruce Mazur, 67, of Bay Point seconded the idea that off-color commentary was more common in previous decades. He heard plenty of it when he was in the military or when he worked as a mechanic.
“Of course, you get a bunch of greasy old guys breathing in brake dust and they’ll talk like that,” Mazur said.
A 72-year-old retired teacher, who works out at Walnut Creek’s Forma Gym, said Trump’s comments represent an outmoded style of offensive jock talk that’s no longer acceptable in guy society.
“There used to be a guy — a back-slappy type — who talked kind of grotesque, kind of like Trump,” said the man who asked that his name not be used. “He kind of had a foul mouth and would say things sort of racist when nobody black was around. But that’s changed. He’s still there but much more gentlemanly and the younger guys there, I don’t hear that stuff from them at all. The world is changing, and that kind of stuff is not cool.” |
